Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Trying to track down information on my paternal grandfather

2017-09-01 Thread Cheri Mello
Claire,

You need to go to the Azores Genweb here and read this 20 page document on
how to locate your ancestors: https://goo.gl/R6tWfF

Also, I'd go to the local public library and check out a book on genealogy.
I like Emily Anne Croom's "Unpuzzling Your Past." Check out whatever grabs
you.

In addition, you can see if your local adult school teaches a genealogy
class. You local Family History Center may have them as well. If there's a
local genealogy society near you, they can teach you as well.

You're not ready to do Azorean research. You need to research your American
ancestors and learn how to use U.S. Census records and get used to the
differences from census to census. It creates a time line for your
ancestor. All that information is summarized in the link above, in any good
genealogy book and taught in all genealogy classes.

Good luck and keep us posted.

His name was Joseph Angus Lewis, but I am sure that is the Americanized
version. I have no idea when he came to the US other than sometime between
1888 and 1910. I went to the azores genweb, and I have now ordered a death
certificate for him. They say it can take up to 12 weeks, so I will hope the
information I have is close enough. I am such a beginner at this! I would
really like to hire a genealogist to help, but I don't know where to start.
Thank you for your help.

Do an Internet search on "azores genweb" (no quotes) and go to Research
Aids and then Finding Your Roots (or maybe How to Find...) It's full of info to
get you started.

I will try to help you. Can you please give me the name of his wife and
his children and where they lived in the US? You can send it to my

[AZORES-Genealogy] Trying to track down information on my paternal grandfather

2017-08-31 Thread Claire
My grandfather was born in Faial in the Azores but came to the U.S.
sometime between his birth year of approximately 1888 and 1910. His name
in the U.S. was Lewis, but I remember my parents saying that the name was
really Luiz or something close to that. I thought my mom told me the last
name was four letters, 3 of which were consonants, but I could be wrong
about that. No one in my family has any more information than my
grandfather's name, place of birth, and approximate dates of birth and
death. I joined Ancestry, but I have turned up nothing yet. Any
suggestions?
