RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] uploading gedcom to ftdna

2018-11-26 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
I noticed the same thing on Saturday when I went through the drill of linking a
person on my father’s tree. The relationship did not show up when I went to the
FF matches. I just checked this morning and it is the same – no relationship
but they are linked up. The estimated relationship is 3rd to 5th cousin.

Doreen, You need to email with the kit number, name of match, etc. If I can
duplicate it, I will report it and FTDNA will open a trouble ticket on it. Cheri

Hi Doreen, I just found a match on one of my trees and worked it through. Once
you get the person you match on your tree by any of the methods discussed
earlier. Close the tree and reopen your tree. You will then have a DNA match
box on the left with the cousin’s name and a purple thing in a circle. Another
Purple circle thing on the right above the + - buttons. In the search box enter
the name of your cousin and when his name appears in the dropdown click it and
he will appear in the tree on the center of the tree. He should have a Purple
circle thing if you click it another box will open and ask if you want to link
it go ahead and link and now It should be linked.

Ok, I don’t think you are given a choice on the relationship, you just link to
your tree and the tree gives the relationship. Did you try dragging the name
in the box to the name that matches in your tree?

Is this your tree? As a project admin I only have limited access to it and
cannot see a problem from my end.

There are some problems with the FTDNA tree. I have entered a person on the
tree then on the list of matches it does not show the relationship. This has
happened on several cousins. I have even tried deleting the person and
reentering the lineage and the person. Even with that method it does not work.
Also you must be careful because if you have other cousin related to you
through this line you may have just deleted that connection. It is not very
user friendly. On cousin that are related to me several difference ways I have
resorted to entering just the closest connection. Even this this method it
still does not show some of the relationships on the match list page.

Ok’ It has been a while since I have done it but, go to your page and open your
family tree. Look in the box on the left side and find your 5th cousin’s name.
Then go into the tree and find your 5th cousin and put it in view next to the
box, Then drag your cousin’s name from the box and put in on his name in the
tree. That should then show your 5th cousin as a match.

It's been said over and over that the current tree system on FTDNA is lame. It
was designed by a gamer (FTDNA bought out another company and this employee
came with the buyout). He did not consult genealogists nor did he follow Gedcom
format. That first admin conference, the poor fellow just kept going from admin
to admin saying "Isn't there anything you like?" He left the company and they
brought in a guy who used to work for Dell. I sat down with him and so did
Kathy Fernandes. So did many other admins. He took lots of notes and
screenshots and was going to build the new trees on Gedcom format. That was 2
years ago. One year ago, (last year's admin conference) they showed us what the
trees were going to be like. They would be coming "soon" but then Europe
implemented the General Data Privacy Regulation, and since FTDNA sells in
Europe, they had to make their web site compliant. They did not have the
conference this month. They moved it to March. If I email them, I'm sure I
would get an answer of "soon." It's much easier to get the point across at the
conference. Bennett (or Max) will read the question (or suggestion) and admins
will clap or say something, so they get the point. Two features on FTDNA came
from this Azores list. I brought them to the conference and the other admins
wanted it too. So do the best you can with the trees for now and I'll let you
know in March what is going on.  Cheri

Gedcom format. That was 2 years ago. One year ago, (last year's admin
conference) they showed us what the trees were going to be like. They would
be coming "soon" but then Europe implemented the General Data Privacy
Regulation, and since FTDNA sells in Europe, they had to make their web
site compliant. They did not have the conference this month. They moved it
to March. If I email them, I'm sure I would get an answer of "soon." It's
much easier to get the point across at the conference. Bennett (or Max)
will read the question (or suggestion) and admins will clap or say
something, so they get the point. Two features on FTDNA came from this
Azores list. I brought them to the conference and the other admins wanted
it too. So do the best you can with the trees for now and I'll let you know
in March what is going on. Cheri

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] uploading gedcom to ftdna

2018-11-24 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Ok, I don’t think you are given a choice on the relationship, you just link to
your tree and the tree gives the relationship. Did you try dragging the name
in the box to the name that matches in your tree?

Is this your tree? As a project admin I only have limited access to it and
cannot see a problem from my end.

happened on several cousins.

Hi Sam,

Your choice. You can delete the existing tree or just let the new tree override
the old one. (I just let the new one override the old one).

The viewing of the tree is only 4 generations. So you search for the person. In
the attached screen shot, I searched for Maria de Jesus. If you've entered
birth dates, they appear. If not, you'll have to click on each one of your
Maria's to see who she is married to in order to find the correct one.

Hope this helps,

Hello all;  Can someone tell me please, if I want to update my family tree on
FTDNA, do I still have to delete the existing tree and start fresh?

Also, if you find a relationship that is more than 4 generations back, how do
you connect them to your tree on FTDNA since it only shows 4 generations
maximum or am I missing something?

Thanks,
Sam (Mazatlán, MX)

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] uploading gedcom to ftdna

2018-11-23 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Sam, You can also use the “add” feature in the tree by going to your common
ancestor and then add “father, mother, sibling, spouse, son, daughter” working
down to your 5th cousin.

Well, I’ve never used the search box on FTDNA before. Didn’t even realize it
was there. Ok, I found the person I want to add a relationship for. She is my
4th cousin but; when I click on add relationship the only choices I see are
father, mother, sibling, spouse, son or daughter. How do I add 5th cousin?

2018-11-23 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
You just cannot add a 5th Cousin. You have to have the family tree from that
5th Cousin connecting to a common ancestor in your tree first. This requires
you to upload a revised family tree.

Thanks for asking this Sam! Just today I was trying to add a relationship
and I encountered the same problem. I had attempted this quite a while back
but became confused and didn’t pursue it. I agree, we must be missing
