There was a portuguese family in East Providence with the last name of Rose
who ran a furniture store in the 40s-50s.

My grandfather, Edward Rose was born in Dartmouth, MA but his family lived  
in New Bedford  Dartmouth. His father, Frank Rose came to Boston,  MA in 
1889 with his father from Faial. They were on the passenger  list  as Da 
Roza's. Frank was Francisco Da Roza. The family lived  Ribeirinha, Faial. Frank 
had 3 brothers (4 but one died as a young child),  Manuel, Matthew and 
Anthony (Tony). Tony left MA  went to northern CA. I  haven't been able to 
locate him there yet. The other brothers all stayed in the  Dartmouth/New 
Bedford 
area. Frank Rose had a dairy farm on Smith Neck Rd.,  Dartmouth  a Sand  
Gravel company. I don't know of any of our  family members moving to 
Chicago. We do have family still in the New Bedford  area. 
 
Matthew  Manuel went by the last name Goulart which was from their  
mother. Frank  Tony went by Rose.

book it's filled with Rose/Rosa/Da Rosa/Darosa.

They are very common names, and, they are from all over Faial, as well as 
other places - that's why I specifically mentioned the parish, and place of 
birth.

My grandfather, Edward Rose had a younger brother, Alden Rose. Alden moved  
to southern CA in the late 1950's. His oldest son is Alden Jr., but he goes 
by  Al Rose. I wonder if that could have been him? Al Rose (Alden Jr. now 
lives in  Idaho.) I'll have to look into it.

Quite accurate!  Maria Felicia Rodrigues was from Horta, Faial, and married 
Manuel da Rosa, believed to be from Pico, but perhaps from Faial.  In New 
Bedford, they became Mary F. Rose and Manuel D. Rose.  Al Rose

My great grandmother from Horta listed her maiden name, once she was in New Bedford, as "Rodgers." I'd love to know what the originalPortuguese name might have been.  --
