Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Meaning of surnames on quotes on the NEPS site

2012-08-29 Thread Cheri Mello
Diane,

Like Eric Edgar says, it depends.

My ancestor always said her maiden name was Correia. Her sister always
said her maiden name was Viola (the family alcunha).

You're going to have to document the name and figure out whether to include
it in one of the name fields in your program or include it in a note or
memo field instead.

Don't you just love these answers to Portuguese names? LOL

2012-08-29 Thread eric edgar
Diane,

They do become part of the surname in some cases. In Flores, a branch of
the Pimentel was called Pimentel Canhoto (left-handed). Eventually the
Pimentel was dropped, now just Canhoto.

In Madeira, my wife's family came from a village with many Rodrigues and
Abreu, so her families became known as Rodrigues Lobo ( because they moved
from Estreito da Lobo) and Abreu Lagea ( from the road they lived on.

I'd find a place in the database to add it. I've just left it after the
surname on my Family TreeMaker, It is still alphabetical in a list.

I guess this means my ancestors had some interesting traits.

I am assuming that these would not be part of the actual surnames for
purposes of my genealogy database. Let me know if my assumption is
incorrect.

Thanks to all for the info.

Hi

I have heard my grandparents and mom call these pleas or nicknames?

Does that make sense? So many family names were the same so certain clans or
families were given nicknames to differentiate or identify them. Our family

We're the Denis or "crickets" when I went to the Azores to my grandfathers
village we were taken to the Mat of the crickets where they spent most of

Hi,

Does anyone know the meaning of the use of quotation marks on surnames in
the NEPS site. Examples are:

Manuel Jose "foliao"

Antonio "o cabaco"

Jose "cambado"

The English translations are "merrymaker", "the gourd" and "unstable."

I have not located the original records yet, but wanted to see if anyone
knows what this means first.

Thanks

Repost for Eric Edgar:
Those are their "alcunhas", nicknames.
There often based on physical appearance or behavior.
