RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name patterns in genealogy programs

2019-03-02 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
I had to go back and correct over 2000 names several years ago. Today I am up
to 8200. It took me several weeks to make corrections but eventually, I had it
done.

Something else I thought of this morning is that if you have a person like
“Maria de Jesus” and no last name you enter “Maria de Jesus
\\” the program would then leave the last name blank otherwise it would
arbitrarily assign “Jesus” as the last name. You can try entering names in
different ways and then check on how everything sorts when you do a search.

I believe Rick is correct. I'm not a FTM user, but I don't think that program
asks for Given Names and then Last Name. I think it just asks for Name and does
the American thing of assuming the very last name is the surname. It doesn't
work that way in all countries.

Wow, that's too bad! Maybe you need to do the name as Richard says with the
/Sousa/ around the 'Surname'? That's what we used to have to do with PAF.

Rick and Cheri; Thanks so much for this info. Now that you’ve said it, I
recall having read that before. If only I had been intelligent enough to do it
that way! Now, I have some 5,000 plus names, with a large percentage being
Portuguese and I will have to go back and add the back-slashes. Oh, dear!
Something to keep me busy, I guess!

That is the same method I use in TMG. Sorting and searching by last name is
much easier without the de’s, da’s, do’s, and dos’s, and of course it prints
out in the right order.  In FTM the last time I used it you had to use I think
back-slashes at each end of the last name for example: Maria da Gloria de
\Sousa\.  Then the program would treat  Sousa as the last name

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name patterns in genealogy programs

2019-03-01 Thread Cheri Mello
I believe Rick is correct. I'm not a FTM user, but I don't think that
program asks for Given Names and then Last Name. I think it just asks for
Name and does the American thing of assuming the very last name is the
surname. It doesn't work that way in all countries.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name patterns in genealogy programs

2019-03-01 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
That is the same method I use in TMG. Sorting and searching by last name is
much easier without the de’s, da’s, do’s, and dos’s, and of course it prints
out in the right order. In FTM the last time I used it you had to use I think
back-slashes at each end of the last name for example: Maria da Gloria de
\Sousa\. Then the program would treat Sousa as the last name

Sam,

I use Legacy but when I am in the "Given " name field, I write it as Maria da
Gloria de and then Sousa in the "Surname" Field. When it prints out it comes
out Maria da Gloria de Sousa all in a row. I would think that FTM does the
same?
