Thanks Pam.  I suppose it's possible that he is one of my great 
grandfathers, Matheus da Costa,  which is how the name appears on the 
marriage record of his son Joam da Costa.  Was it common for a boy to take 
a surname given by his mother?   Matheus' wife was Josefa Pacheco (in some 
records it's Pachequa or Pacheca).  She was born in 1714.  I'm trying to 
find their marriage record so that  I can verify the names of Matheus' 
parents.

They basically could pick any name they choosed. Father, mothers
grandparents or whichever.

I would say the mother's name is Jamana Jacintha. as for the maternal  
grandparents Manoel de Benevides  Sebastianna da Conceicao.

The mom looks like Januaria Jacinta.  I'm sure on the Jacinta part.  I've
never seen the name Januaria, so maybe someone else has a better idea.

Maternal grands: Manuel de Benevides and Sebastianna de Conceicao.  and
Sebastianna is e Sebastianna in Portuguese and he ran it together so it
looks like eSebastianna.

The Maternal Grandfather is Jose Custodio.

The maternal grandmother is Maria Francisca. The word after is nasceu or
was born usually it is not capitalized.

the 5th line down.  It looks like Costodio; not sure if I'm reading this
