Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] leaving the azores

2013-02-04 Thread Katharine
Primo John, You're fortunate to have had the opportunity to collect so much
family history (my family was prone to lie and conceal with a vengeance).

Even in the 1960s -- second wave of Azorean immigration, following the
eruption of Capelinhos volcano on Faial -- there were families where the
husband/father came to North America first in order to obtain work and save
up enough money to send for his wife/children; I gather that this was not
unusual. In fact, I personally know such a family where the husband spent
a whole year working in the Bay Area before his wife and kids immigrated
from the Azores. Katharine.

I guess you would have to define what you mean by a woman first. But I'd
say there was nothing typical about any immigration scenario.

I've seen some with parents (I'd call them kids or teens), I've seen some
with their husbands, with an older or younger SIBLING, alone, etc.

My ancestor came in 1901, aged 13, with her 16 year old sister. Their
sponsor in America was a male cousin (the 16 year old later married him).

Not much help :(

When our family left the Azores, they came over in three groups, by way of
the Hawaiian Kingdom. In the first group were my Great Grandparents and
the older boys, leaving two of the younger boys with relatives. In the
second group, were my Great Grandfather's older brother and his family and one
of the younger sons. Finally when the 3rd small group traveled, the
youngest son, now a year older, was chaparoned by my Great Grandfather's
sister
in-laws, sister, and finally reunited with his family.

The sacrifices they made.

When it comes to women leaving the Azores to come to the USA, is there any
typical situation that would bring them over? coming with parents? coming
with husband? would they have traveled over with an older or younger
brother? Would she have traveled over alone if another family member already
here?
I'm trying to find a clue to connect my great aunt Francisca to my great
grandfather Jose to maybe narrow down some of the search results for
traveling into the USA
