Yes, I had an FF kit on batch 575 that they posted the matches about a week

a new sample kit.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Translation help, mom's name

2014-07-21 Thread João Ventura
Hi Cheri,

Most likely, they did baptize him, but the priest lost the record (or
something), and when they had to find it again, it was nowhere to be found.
It's easy to solve that by re-baptizing him.

Yes, they were. It appears that they discovered he wasn't baptized when

Don't know if the family all got sick, everyone was busy harvesting or
what. No exact date was given, only the year. So he was baptized as an
adult. Kinda weird for the 1820s, if memory serves me correctly.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Marriage records, Reading of the banns

2014-07-21 Thread Isabella Baltar
Suzanne,

The banns are read on the parish where the bride or the groom is from. The
priest usually writes who is from where. Most of the time the marriages
took place at the brides village, but there are times the marriage happens
on the grooms village. I have seen that before on some records and on my
family.

I talk about marriage on my blog and I even have a link to a Youtube
documentary from BBC on that.

I also do transcripts and translations for a fee, you can check my tab
Paleography on my blog or click on the link below.

If you want to learn more you can also send me a private email and visit my

 Right side of the page.

My question: When it says the banns were read in a different village from
the one where the marriage took place, how do I discern who was from that
 village?

I know that normally, marriages took place in the bride's village, but I
don't know if that holds true for all marriages.

Is it possible to get a literal translation of sorts of the first 13 lines
 of that document?

I have a word list from the LDS church, but I'd like to add to it with
some of these words that may be archaic in use.

 Thank you very much.

Ponte de Lima. Your surname can descend from this guy's family or simply

[AZORES-Genealogy] Baptism 20 years later

So I don't hijack the other thread...

Here's the baptism of my ancestor, 20 years after his birth:
Luis, top left: http://goo.gl/xKMGur

I did this work years ago. Now that I look at it again, it appears to say
that he was baptized in 1825. I don't think it's saying anything out of
the ordinary though. Godparents, witnesses, the priest...that's all
ordinary.

Part of batch 575 came in last week.

I know that the customer service rep I talked to this morning was new, as I

But since they had to send you new vials, yours may be fast tracked.

As far as I can tell from the admin pages, Family Finder and mtDNA is
behind. It looks like they are working on the ones from the Father's Day
sale last month, in June (as well as the genealogy show). The lab manager
said NOT to have a sale in June because of the new lab equipment that was
coming in. And they still had a mini sale anyways.

And I notice that they have changed the layout of the personal pages
AGAIN. ARRRGGH!! Doesn't I.T./Engineering have anything else to do???

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Baptism 20 years later

2014-07-21 Thread Margaret Vicente
Cheri,

If I may point out this is not a birth record, it is a documented account
of a birth record that went missing and here logged and witnessed:

It does state he was *born* and *baptized* in 1825 by the then Rev. Cura
Joao Jose Ferreira. This is a written statement only based on the swearing
of the original godparents and his own parents along with the witnesses
present at the baptism in 1825 over the holy oils because the original
record was missing.and he goes on to say... for this I wrote and signed
in this said place (page).

Also please note the next page's baptism is dated 1822. So he went back in
the book and found an empty page to add the missing record.

Another thing is the CCA shows the year of record being 1837-1848 when
we're reading records for 1821 etc.

Important to note the Catholic church does *not* baptize twice it literally
would be considered a sacrilege.

After I looked it over this morning, I was thinking something like that may
have been happening. Glad to know. And that they were conserving paper in
1825 and sticking random baptisms wherever they could find room because who

So he went back
in the book and found an empty page to add the missing record.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Baptism 20 years later

2014-07-21 Thread Diane George
Hi,

I have a record from Flamengos that I found accidentally. My great-grandfather
Luis Goncalves da Silva was born in 1860 according to his gravestone, but I
could not find any baptism record at all. One day I was looking for someone
else and found a note at the bottom of a page among baptism records at the
bottom of a page with January births in 1858:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/FAL-HT-FLAMENGOS-B-1844-1860/FAL-HT-FLAMENGOS-B-1844-1860_item1/P201.html
  (bottom left)

That record pointed me to another entry in 1880 that contained the usual
baptism information (except the actual date), including the parents and
grand-parents.

This happy accident got me past a brick wall and led me through ancestors to
10th great grandparents from records were in the CCA records. Prior to that
find, all I had was the name of Luis’ parents from the NEPS database.

I don't suppose anyone has a connection with a Joseph Coreia Borba dob
7-7-1875 in Pico? I don't know village. He came to USA in 1891 and
settled in Northern California, Yreka or Hawkinsville area in Siskiyou,
County. He married a Emilia Rose Lemos there in 1910. Emilia is a sister
to my Grandfather George Lemos. Just curious as I see the Borba name on

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] GRACIOSA - list of marriages

2014-07-21 Thread 'Bill Boyd' via Azores Genealogy
Eliseu,

Thank you for this list!  I have to imagine with all of the Conde and
Vasconcellos from Graciosa that we are related at some point

I was on Graciosa and Terceira for the first two weeks of July.  It was great
to visit Graciosa.  Of course, with an island the size of Graciosa, the odds of
running into a cousin is very high.  We took the first taxi at the stand at the
airport and the driver turned out to be a second cousin!  As I am Portuguese
language challenged, it was great to hear perfect English (he moved back to
Graciosa from Massachusetts some 17 years ago.)

Visiting the archives in Angra and getting to meet (the other) Joao Ventura was
also an extra treat!  A cousin from a line via Brazil to Switzerland (Conde
line) also made the trip to Graciosa.

Great encouragement to spend more time on my Portuguese half, especially with
Graciosa available on the CCA site now!

Obrigado,

Bill
