[AZORES-Genealogy] @ Questions Regarding Confession Rolls

2017-01-30 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
In some freguisias some yearly Rols are complete and some yearly Rols cover
only certain neighborhoods. It just depends. Try locating who was living next
to them in the years before or after, or attempt to locate the street. If you
can't even find the street, chances are that particular Rol did not cover that
neighborhood!

[AZORES-Genealogy] @ Questions Regarding Confession Rolls

2017-01-30 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
Rarely do you see seperate families living together. More than likely they are
either extended family, or someone is a servant or caretaker or something. I
have looked at thousands of entries and never seen two whole families living
together!

It all has to do with the hereditary land transfer in the Azores...

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Book Lookups

2017-01-30 Thread eaim
Jeremy,
I have ancestors that came from Sao Jorge and settled in San Gregorio,
California. I would be interested to know if they appear in #7 "Sao Jorge
Island Azores Islands Families and Their Descendants in Ribeira Seca, Sao
Jorge Topo, Sao Jorge and California, United States of America". My great
grandfather was Manuel Isidoro Bettencourt. and his wife was Josephine Enos
(or Pimentel I've seen both in the records of my grandfather and his
siblings). He was born ~1864 and she was born ~1871. I had my DNA tested
and have come up with matches that have Bettencourts, Pimentels, Vieiras,
Silvieiras come up a lot but most don't have very good trees if they even
have a tree posted on Ancestry. I'm having difficulty doing genealogy on my
paternal grandfather's side of the family because of the strange surname
rules (compared to northern Europe where all my other ancestors came from).
My great grandparents dropped the Bettencourt name and the surname became
Isidoro here in the United States.

Edith Isidoro

[AZORES-Genealogy] Frank Gomes and Manuel Gomes

2017-01-30 Thread 'Caroline Gomes' via Azores Genealogy
Hi all!

I have not posted in a few years but have decided to dust off the family
history research and continue on.

I am looking to follow the paternal line of my father-in-law, Frank Gomes,
who was born on March 1, 1911 in Watsonville, CA and died on October 22,
1989 in Concord, CA. His parents were Manuel Gomes (born around 1877 (?)
- somewhere in the Azores) and Mary A. Brown. Frank's siblings are Eva
Gomes, Louise Gomes, Florence Gomes, Manuel Gomes and Raymond Gomes. Frank
has three children: JoAnn Gomes Taylor, Larry Gomes and Gary Gomes.

We have been going thru Ancestry.com and see some of the various Census
records from the Central Valley here in CA but all that we see listed as a
birthplace for Manuel is Portugal with nothing specific. We are trying to
figure out where Manuel's paternal line leads to in the Azores.

Help! :)
