[backstage] The people behind the stage

2006-10-03 Thread Ian Forrester
Hi All,

I thought it would be a good time to introduce both myself and Matthew to the
Backstage list.

First Matthew,

Matthew re-joins the BBC from UBC Media, where he worked as the Interactive
Content Manager - launching and selling, amongst other things Podcasts left
right and centre! As such he developed a working commercial model for
podcasting, and produced the podcasts for The Times, The Sun, The Telegraph and
the major record labels, in fact his MySpace page still says he does (he likes
the emails he get's from the girls I think). He's spoken at many conferences
about the benefits of podcasting, and a more open community.

Before that he was the Development Producer for BBC English Regions - launching
the Where I Live sites, and before that the Client Side Developer for English
Regions, primarily dealing with the launch and coding of the Travel News site,
the England homepages and the BBC Local Radio sites.

And myself,

I've moved from the BBC World Service New Media team to Backstage where I was a
software engineer mainly working with XML technologies like XSL. In the past I
have launched RSS feeds across the World Service language sites, helped the
World Service to start blogging and make sense of things like Semantic Mark-up,
Podcasting, Social Media.

My past includes working in the fields of information design, interaction
design and even teaching at degree and post degree levels. I have a keen
interest in transparency and openness across everything which technology
touches. But I'm mostly known for all those social events in London like
Geekdinners, BarCampLondon and hopefully Backstage with time.

We have many great things planned for backstage and the wider BBC community. We
aim to keep you all informed with our decisions and plans, so look out for
announcements soon.

Cheers,

Ian Forrester || backstage.bbc.co.uk

[backstage] BBC news ticker in Second Life

2006-10-03 Thread Mario Menti
In case there's any Second Lifers on this list, I thought I'd mention a little experiment I did last night - created a very simple BBC news ticker that cycles through the latest/newest 10 news items and displays the headlines. For details and teleport/location see
http://menti.net/?p=13It really is incredibly basic, but more features could of course be added (initially thinking of hooks to launch web browser, and the facility to select which flavour of the BBC news feed the screen should display.
Cheers,Mario.

Title: Hello... And who knows what's on TV tonight?

Hi all,

I feel a bit like the strange kid who joins the class half way through the year :-) As you know Ian and I are now at the helm of the good ship backstage, and we've got some pretty cool ideas (well we think they're cool but it's amazing what you can convince yourself of over a super large starbucks and a cup cake made entirely out of sugar but I digress).

In the next week or so we're going to be launching another rather cool competition with some pretty funky prizes (if we can persuade the relevant manufactures to part with them early).

But before we launch the comp we thought we'd post a couple of the api's that may be of use the first is one you've all seen before - the BBC Web API to our programme data

http://www0.rdthdo.bbc.co.uk/services/index.html

It's a nice way to consume the TV Anytime data and do some cool mash ups with it.

The second api Ian will tell you all about - but it's new and you've not seen it before so stand by your beds.

On a more personal note I must point out that you should ignore my personal site and blog they're both rather naff at the moment - no excuses past an argument with my hosting company and trying to move everything - which means I can't access it! But more news on my motorbike blog again soon. If you're interested in what I do outside of work check out http://londonbikers.com

Nice
stuff Mario, I will check it out next time I'm in second
life.

Can
you add some detail how you did it? I've only looked at the scripting language
insecond life briefly.

Just a
thought, if you used the AV News RSS feeds, you could link to the stream which
would actually stream into Second life? Or maybe not?

Only on the multicast trial (recent versions of QT support H264)

How does live video streaming work in Second life? Do you need to go
via a proxy?

There's also the odd news-related mp4 video downloads available as
part of the podcast trial

(not *exactly* Second Life fodder, but you never know.. there's always
space for some highbrow amid all the pron and gambling)
