[backstage] HD iPlayer at last!

2009-03-10 Thread Brian Butterworth
The BBC iPlayer http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/ is set to go HD in the next
month.

BBC Vision Director Jana Bennett let the news slip during a panel discussion
at the FT Digital Media and Broadcasting Conference. Expect a big
announcement with full details of the service in the next few days.

It's difficult to determine exactly what form the HD content will take at
this stage; will it be 720p or 1080p? Will it be download-only, or
streaming?

Yes excellent news, lets hope the ISP's lay off on the bandwidth capping so we
can all download this stuff without worry.

I'm hoping its both streaming and download, but I honestly don't know.

RE: [backstage] Norwegian National Broadcaster using OpenTracker Torrent Server to distribute DRM free HDTV

2009-03-10 Thread Ian Forrester
So I downloaded all the videos because I wanted to learn some lessons about how
and why they did things.

The subtitle format choice was very interesting. They could have easily have
just burned in the subtitles but they choose not to.

I'm still loving the fact its using BitTorrent for distribution, but even more
so for using H.264/AVC with AAC sound (AC3 would have been a big thumbs up) Not
far off HD 720p either, maybe they should have just done it in HD

Watermark in the top right, not really noticeable and maybe a good idea.

I wonder where its spread to already and if there watching for its spread?

Also cool they are promoting UGC subtitles. I wonder if mashups would be
treated the same way, perhaps if uploaded to YouTube, they might receive the
same recognition and a link on their site.
Could be a pretty nice way to drive content.

Norway's public broadcaster sets up its own torrent tracker using same
code as The Pirate Bay POSTED BY CORY DOCTOROW, MARCH 8, 2009 2:27 PM
 | PERMALINK

Eirikso from NRK, the Norwegian public broadcast, writes to tell us that
they've set up their own BitTorrent tracker, adding, The tracker is based on
the same OpenTracker software that the Pirate Bay has been using for the last
couple of years. By using BitTorrent we can reach our audience with full
quality, unencrypted media files. Experience from our early tests show that
if we're the best provider of our own content we also gain control of it.
The first show we’re putting on our new tracker is a very popular television
series about people living in remote places in Norway. It features
fascinating people and spectacular scenery. We have provided all the
Norwegian subtitle files and if people want to fansub any of the episodes
we’re more than happy to let you do that. Please let us know in the comments
and we’ll link to your translations.
We are providing full quality video files with no DRM. The biggest problem
regarding this project is to clear all the rights we need to be able to
distribute content in such an open system. NRK is a big content producer, but
record labels, actors, external production companies and format rights owners
usually have contracts that prevent us from distributing our content freely
in the internet. We are in constant negotiations over these issues. And it
seems like it should be possible to find a solution where NRK gets the rights
it needs and the rights holders get the compensation they want.

In addition to this we look into new providers. Pump Audio, Magnatune and
other companies with easier licensing systems are interesting sources.

The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation is promoting the free and opensource
Miro software as their preferred BitTorrent client. It is user friendly and
contains everything you need to both download and play the high quality video
 files.

Re: [backstage] Open Platform from the Guardian to make online content available free

2009-03-10 Thread Kevin Anderson
Fearghas,

I thought about moving that paragraph up closer to the top so it was clear
that the content wasn't 'free as in beer'.

I would say that there are actually two parts to this launch, the content
API, which requires carrying ads, and the Data Store. There will still be
ad-free syndication arrangements. Matt McAllister is writing a blog post
about that right now. I'll have to double check, but I don't think that
there are the same ad TCs for the Data Store. We're hoping to collect a lot
of data sets for that.

[backstage] F1 API

2009-03-10 Thread Chris Newell

Formula One fans may be interested in this experimental motor racing data API:
http://ergast.com/mrd/

This is a personal project, not a BBC one, but I'm shamelessly plugging it here
because I'd really value your comments and suggestions.

The API provides result data from 2000 onwards, circuit geo co-ordinates and
Wikipedia links for drivers, constructors, circuits, races and seasons.

The intention is to track the emerging results during the coming season where,
coincidentally, TV coverage is moving back to the BBC.
