RE: [backstage] backstage Twitter?

2009-07-13 Thread Ian Forrester
Ok interesting debate.

So first up to answer the core questions.

1. Is there an official backstage #hashtag for Twitter - Nope there isn't
because the way I see it is that backstage isn't as such a destination. In the
past we've used bbcbackstage for tags but if you want to do something like
#bbcbaksge, I and others will adopt it.

2. Is there a Backstage user to follow? - Yes there's
http://www.twitter.com/bbcbackstage. It doesn't say much because I don't want
to spam people with random stuff which I put on my own twitter. But I'm willing
to change that a bit and say more via there.

3. Is there a list of backstagers to follow somewhere? - Nope not yet, unless
you follow the list and pick out people who have replied to this thread. If
people are really interested in this, I can setup a page on
welcomebackstage.com for people to add there twitter id.

Right now Facebook/others

Personally I object to facebook based on its EULA. I don't mind things flowing
into facebook but I never want the conversation to end up there. It's a pain if
you don't have a account and even with an account its like AOL in more ways
that I'd first imagined. And don't get me started on the data portability of
facebook!
However I've been thinking about moving this list over to google groups, which
you could argue is as bad as facebook? I also considered setting up a la.conica
for bbc backstagers with the ability to federate on to identi.ca and twitter.
Something like army.twit.tv

Let me know what you guys think of this stuff

Hi Ian,

because the way I see it is that backstage isn't as such a destination. In
the past we've used bbcbackstage for tags but if you want to do something
like #bbcbaksge, I and others will adopt it.

If there was a standard tag, say #bbcbackstage then you could stick a nice
box using the http://search.twitter.com/search.atom?q=%23bbcbackstage query
with ATOM results on http://welcomebackstage.com/ - this would be a handy
demonstration function that could go on all sorts of BBC sites...

 2. Is there a Backstage user to follow? - Yes there's
 http://www.twitter.com/bbcbackstage. It doesn't say much because I don't
want to spam people with random stuff which I put on my own twitter. But I'm
willing to change that a bit and say more via there.

It would be handy for the @bbcbackstage user to auto post when there is new
content of the website?

 3. Is there a list of backstagers to follow somewhere? - Nope not yet,
unless you follow the list and pick out people who have replied to this
thread. If people are really interested in this, I can setup a page on
welcomebackstage.com for people to add there twitter id.

Sounds good to me.

I agree with you, but it is certainly worth studying as people are bound to
be making some serious money, somewhere. It's probably Facebook.

However I've been thinking about moving this list over to google groups,
which you could argue is as bad as facebook?

I'm OK with this, being a Google whore (I have a G1).

[backstage] What's the calendar app?

Like the calendar at http://ideas.welcomebackstage.com/node/11

Also liked being notified by the tweet was cool :)

What's the calendar app? I'm wanting to tie a calendar to a database of
people, events and places using Drupal. The timeline is from 1950 to the
present time so it needs flexibility and range.

[backstage] BBC programme about Open Source being made ?

I heard (from a colleague in the US) that the BBC were making a programme or
series about open source.

Anyone here know anything about it or anyone involved?

Re: [backstage] What's the calendar app?

2009-07-13 Thread Nico Morrison
Realised that about 30 secs after emailing, thanks for no sarcasm.

I think I am surprised that Backstage is using a proprietary embedded
closed-source program for this. I thought it would be an open-source app.

I do not trust Google, nor Facebook, nor Microsoft, etc, etc .. I use
them all - to the minimum that enables my work. For example my Gmail fowards
to other accounts that I hold locally. It's always a compromise between
trust, security usability. I try to spread closed-source risks. We have
only to look at Geocities to see the long-term risks. They also ruled the
world once.

I suppose you at BBC Backstage are forced by time money constraints to
employ closed-source, it is a shame.

I'd still like tips on any calendar/database apps that fit into Drupal as
I'm a Drupal neophyte with a real need.

Regards,
Nico Morrison
