[backstage] The Sky at Night BBC1(HD) vs BBC4 editions - the saga
The Sky at Night is still SD but it's broadcast as upscaled HD on BBC1 HD. The quality is slightly better but it would be nice in proper HD. I'm not too worried about Patrick's wrinkles (see Countryfile/Jay Hunt affair). I just don't see the logic of having two versions of the same programme other than keeping an editor and subtitle creator busy - a sort of job creation scheme. - Original Message - From: "Geoff Hogg" To: Sent: Wednesday, November 10, 2010 9:49 AM Subject: Re: [backstage] The Sky at Night BBC1 vs BBC4 editions From another point of view. Why not put on iPlayer HD versions of programmes that haven't been broadcast in HD. Maybe even 1080p? Or even have an iPlayer channel for programmes that haven't been broadcast at all? There does seem to be the issue that iPlayer can only be used to catch up with broadcast TV, it doesn't need to be tied at all to it. Providing The Sky At Night is recorded in HD, surely it could be put on iPlayer as HD even though it hasn't been broadcast. I had planned to buy a HD pvr, but since my Sony Bluray player can connect up to the BBC iPlayer I can watch more than enough HD TV without having to buy another more expensive box. One request. It would be great if the iPlayer could remember my last saved position in a feed, I keep having to fast forward to where I stopped, but it is still early days. How much TV is recorded and edited in HD. I assume there are limits due to all the capital investment required. Geoff -- Geoff Hogg - Sent via the backstage.bbc.co.uk discussion group. RE: [backstage] The Sky at Night BBC1 vs BBC4 editions
Not really- we use the iplayer backend to provide the embeddable media player to stick in Movable type. The UI for the ingest makes clear that this content is going into iPlayer, and various metadata elements are assigned so that it is associated as a 'non-scheduled' element. It's a bit strange tbh, and soetimes we wonder if it wouldn't be easier to use vimeo or youtube, but the business processes around uploading to those channels are far more complex and require more sign off, so out of time constraints I stick with iPlayer embedded media player. One of these days I'll get around to wider publication. a -Original Message- From: owner-backst...@lists.bbc.co.uk [mailto:owner-backst...@lists.bbc.co.uk] On Behalf Of Ben Weiner Sent: 10 November 2010 11:03 To: backstage@lists.bbc.co.uk Subject: Re: [backstage] The Sky at Night BBC1 vs BBC4 editions On 10 Nov 2010, at 10:42, Ant Miller wrote: > There is content in iPlayer that's never been broadcast or scheduled- > our R&D videos for instance.
