[backstage] BBC iPlayer on PS3

2008-11-29 Thread Michael Pritchard
I noticed this morning the iPlayer is now supposed to work on the PS3
officially, see http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/where_to_get_iplayer/
However it still doesnt work, getting an 'enable javascript' error despite
it being enabled
The error has already been reported on
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbiplayer/F7331803?thread=6109696, just hadnt seen
any announcement about ps3 support before now.

[backstage] new prototype, geoRss feeds for travel data

2007-04-10 Thread Michael Pritchard

Hi All,

i posted this a week or so to the backstage site but it hasn't been posted
so I thought i'd send it here.

In the absence of any GeoRss support to the backstage travel data feeds I've
produced my own from the tpeg files.

see http://bbc.blueghost.co.uk/about_geoRss.html, includes details on adding
them to google maps.

all data available from http://bbc.blueghost.co.uk/travel_data/

any comments freely accepted.

Thanks,

GeoRSS support in the API.

As for suggestions, different colored icons/lines for severity of the
incident?
Time Stamp on the Icon (on click)
Lines not yet click-able (a feature request on the api) but maybe soon.
(try v2.78 of the google map api)

But the like the breakdown from UKCountyLocalising of the rss feed,
excellent.

So I just thought I'd ask if those licensing problems were any nearer to
being solved and whether the Postcoder API was any closer to being made
 public.

Or, failing that, what other tools do people use to convert postcodes to
lat/long? It seems to me that the Google Maps GeoCoder object doesn't
 understand UK postcodes.

also the url is a bit deceiving, seeing '5day' in the url made me think that it would contain a 5 day forecast, but it only seems to be 1 day. Is there any chance this could have 5 days like the url suggests?

Greetings Backstagers,

I am very pleased to inform you that BBC Weather's first RSS feeds are now live. Links to them can be found on all 5 day forecast pages:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/5day.shtml

The feeds are located at

http://feeds.bbc.co.uk/weather/feeds/rss/{world|id}/{location_id}.xml

E.g.

http://feeds.bbc.co.uk/weather/feeds/rss/5day/id/2315.xml and

http://feeds.bbc.co.uk/weather/feeds/rss/5day/world/4567.xml

All of the 7379 feeds are updated at least* twice a day (at approximately 8AM/PM *GMT*).

We are planning more feeds, and improvements to these ones as well (e.g. dynamic generation of feeds, which will allow us to offer different flavours such as Atom; additional content such as tide times and current observations (Met Office willing); additional semantic mark-up).

In the meantime we look forward to seeing your BBC Weather widgets in the Backstage Widgets Compo:

http://backstage.bbc.co.uk/news/archives/2006/10/widgets_competi.html

I have included geo:lat/long tags in all entries to facilitate mappy mashups. Enjoy!

I look forward to hearing your comments, concerns and ideas.

using the simple results formats this happens at startup:Call channel.listfor each channel:call getLocations to find those with a real-audio feedcall getInfo to obtain the location of the logo graphic

Re: [backstage] Google homepage module

I should also mention the advantage of using mine or marios module addons opposed to using rss feeds is that i found google caches the rss feed so the now and next data can be hours out of date, while the modules are live (or near enough live based on how long they are cached on mine or marios server)

http://tv.blueghost.co.uk/google_ig_nn.xml
to google as mario mentions above. The module defaults to channels 1-5. This doesn't work too well around midnight as it doesn't get the next program for the following day, although i am working to fix that. Ideally google will let the user select a number of channels from a list, but currently they only support single-option combo boxes)
You can also get a single channel listing (currently 1 day only). You can customise this in google.com/ig by clicking the Edit link on the module and selecting the channel. The url for this one is

live.com gadget to become a Google homepage module.
If Google accept it, it should eventually appear in their directory (http://www.google.com/ig/directory

), in the meantime if you're interested you can install it by adding the developer module from the
google.com/ig page (click Add Content Create a Section and enter developer.xml in the text field), then add my module from the url

http://backstage.menti.name/google/nownext.xmlThis is a direct port, so functionality-wise it does exactly the same as the

live.com gadget (auto-refreshes every 10 minutes, manual refresh button, hover over program title to see synopsis).
Comments and feedback welcome as always, cheers,Mario.

A Technorati search found the likely source of this sudden interest, a rather misleadingly titled post on BetaNews:

The good thing (apart from the fact that it actually stayed up without

now have plenty of logs to comb through, which may encourage me to
improve the interface (the logs are interesting now there's sufficient
data to see where people tend to trip up), which is something I meant

more important things to do..
