An obvious point. OK what about tagging. Sky At Night in HD could be tagged as Science, Space, Astronomy, HD, (PatrickMoore? he is a tag in his own right). I got the hang of tags on delicious a few years back and like the way I can follow different subjects. Although I don't know how many others use tags this way. From another point of view. Why not put on iPlayer HD versions of programmes that haven't been broadcast in HD. Maybe even 1080p? Or even have an iPlayer channel for programmes that haven't been broadcast at all? There does seem to be the issue that iPlayer can only be used to catch up with broadcast TV, it doesn't need to be tied at all to it. Providing The Sky At Night is recorded in HD, surely it could be put on iPlayer as HD even though it hasn't been broadcast. I had planned to buy a HD pvr, but since my Sony Bluray player can connect up to the BBC iPlayer I can watch more than enough HD TV without having to buy another more expensive box. One request. It would be great if the iPlayer could remember my last saved position in a feed, I keep having to fast forward to where I stopped, but it is still early days. Not really- we use the iplayer backend to provide the embeddable media player to stick in Movable type. The UI for the ingest makes clear that this content is going into iPlayer, and various metadata elements are assigned so that it is associated as a 'non-scheduled' element. It's a bit strange tbh, and soetimes we wonder if it wouldn't be easier to use vimeo or youtube, but the business processes around uploading to those channels are far more complex and require more sign off, so out of time constraints I stick with iPlayer embedded media player. The easiest solution is just play the 30 minute edition on BBC1 then we can watch the HD version on BBC1 HD. Another solution is to have a simulcast BBC4 (BBC4 HD). The BBC transmits six live streams of TV channels. Two are split: BBC3/CBBC and BBC4/CBeebies. Two are News and Parliament. BBC3/CBBC and BBC4/CBeebies are UK-wide streams. BBC One already has a HD channels. So, there's two HD slots on Freeview HD and four on satellite and cable. Why not make BBC3/CBBC and BBC4/CBeebies HD on satellite and cable. On Freeview HD, use the bandwidth for two of the four HD channels. For the other two streams either a) Providide a low-bandwidth SD service over MPEG4 for the other two streams; b) Provide a no-bandwidth MHEG5 or static MPEG4 caption for the other two streams with retune to 2 [or 7 or 9]. Then you can scrap the silly HD channel. Having the standard def BBC1/2/3/4 channels on the same transponder going forwards (this used to be the case?) would also have been extremely useful when using PVR software that can record the whole TS (or any part thereof). Only 1 tuner needed... Whilst we are at it (given the demise of backstage): - why does only the Windows Media Centre automatically put on the subtitles when you mute the sound? - why wasn't channel 888 a way to put the subtitles on? - why are those people who are most likely to rely on digital text, ie they don't have internet access, provided with the most third-rate BBC news service? - how are the text-plus Rabbit and Gay Rabbit public services?
