I was searching for this the other day (because CentOS 8 goes EOL
12-31-2021) and found there are *.deb packages somewhere on the wiki
pages. Might be the packages being discussed here, if so, sorry for
redundancy.

But, I could not locate a PPA.

Maybe you just have a bad one or it is overheating in its case or
something. I've left a 4B powered up for months without crashing.
Mine doesn't have a load like backuppc - just occasionally playing
videos with Kodi or Plex, but it doesn't crash. The only serious quirk
I've seen is that having the HDMI port active interferes with wifi -
but you'd want to use ethernet for backups anyway.

I'm going to add here that I have seen a few posts (elsewhere) that some
4B w/8Gb RAM had crash issues and a 4B 4Gb running the same program runs
fine. Wondering what model 4B the OP is using? (2Gb, 4Gb, or 8Gb?)

[BackupPC-users] Fwd: Re: Regarding $Conf{RsyncArgs}

2020-11-02 Thread Robert E. Wooden

Here is a better explanation of my question.

If rsync backups $Conf{RsyncArgsExtra} are set to include acls & xattrs
attributes in backups.

During a restore, will BackupPC v4.4.0 restore the acls & xattrs?

In other words if BackupPC backs up acls & xattrs attributes does it
restore them OR do these, or some of these (listed below) need to be set
to include acls or xattrs during restores

/$Conf{RsyncArgsExtra} = []; $Conf{RsyncFullArgsExtra} = ['--checksum'];
$Conf{RsyncIncrArgsExtra} = []; $Conf{RsyncRestoreArgs} = [ ... ];
$Conf{RsyncRestoreArgsExtra} = [];/

If you log in as the backuppc user can you create files in

Or something like that. Also, look at both the BackupPC logs and the

So, I have realized that I could rebuild (again) and I will not be "out
much" but, what I would do differently this time is the installation
sequence.

Previously, I had installed the OS, installed BackupPC (it ran but
/var/lib/BackupPC was storing on the OS hdd and not the raid array.)
After I'd gotten BackupPC to run, then I created the raid array. My
problems began to mount.

This install, I would OS first, setup the array and create the symlink
and then, install BackupPC. The BackupPC install should simply follow
the symlink (think it is the /var/lib/BackupPC directory it's looking
for) and place backup files and directories onto the array, like I want.

I will need to change my install sequence and that should solve my
problem  . . . I think.

(Learn as you go, sometimes.)

[BackupPC-users] Symlink for /var/lib/BackupPC

2020-10-28 Thread Robert E. Wooden
I rebuilt a machine to update to CentOS 8 and ease upgrades because
BackupPC v.4.40 (as of 2020-10-28) is available via epel & PowerTools
repo per this:
https://kifarunix.com/install-and-configure-backuppc-on-centos-8/

I created the symlink for /var/lib/BackupPC to connect to /dataR6 (a
raid6 array). I copied all the directories and files over from
/var/lib/BackupPC, changed directory and file permissions of the new
directory to match the old and restarted BackupPC.

Apparently I did something incorrectly. BackupPC runs but, will not
capture a client. "Clicking" 'FULL BACKUP' of any existing client causes
nothing. Checking 'Server Status' and no backups have started. Checking
logs states "Can't open log file."

Suggestions on what to do?

Re: [BackupPC-users] stumped by ssh

2012-10-13 Thread Robert E. Wooden
I work nights, so, last night when I got home I sent my previous email.
This morning I got up early and while (software) updating my backuppc
server I decided to try sudo -u backuppc
/usr/share/backuppc/BackupPC_dump -v -f [clienthostname] and the client
is backup as I write this.

What happened, I am asking myself. Last night I was running ssh -vvv
[clienthostname] to test my ssh connection. ssh was 'complaining' that
I had some bad lines in my /var/lib/backuppc/.ssh/known_hosts file. I
removed those 'bad lines' with ssh-keygen -f
/var/lib/backuppc/.ssh/known_hosts -R bob-desktop2 and long story
short, this morning (half asleep) decided to let my backuppc server fail
again trying to backuppc this troubled client. To my amazement, half
asleep, it did not fail!

Thank you everyone for your help. Somehow, during this journey, I
stumbled onto the solution but, I might never have found it without the
help of the mailing list. So, thank you everyone!

 Some related SSH tips:

 1. Remove your known_hosts file now.
 2. Create an ~/.ssh/config file, owned by the right user, mode 644,
 containing:

 HashKnownHosts no
 StrictHostKeyChecking no

 This means that:

 1. Lines will be added to known_hosts without prompting (no more pressing
 yes to accept new fingerprints).
 2. Key mismatches will be tolerated with SSH key logins. A warning will be
printed, and password logins are still blocked.
 3. Lines added to known_hosts will have a readable host/ip entry at the
begin of line. This makes removing conflicts easier.

Some people think this reduces security. It does. But I consider it a fair
balance versus usability, especially when you work with a large number of
 hosts.

 Regards,
 Tyler

You clearly know more about rsync than I do. What does this tell you?

And for the record, I have three other clients working properly. For
what ever reason this particular client (that use to work fine) has
decided to resist exchanging keys and after I got it to exchange keys
and answer whoami with 'root' still will not backup.

Thanks everyone.

I will add that I am not running SELinux nor am I running ufw (Ubuntu
firewall.)

I am an Ubuntu OS house.

I have even considered a ssh blacklist but, I cannot find one anywhere
(unless I am looking in the wrong directories.)

I am beginning to consider possible hardware issues but, it worked
before I re-installed the OS. So, that doesn't make much sense.

What can this issue be???

[BackupPC-users] stumped by ssh

2012-10-10 Thread Robert E. Wooden
I have been using Backuppc for a few years now. Recently I upgraded my
machine to newer, faster hardware. Hence, I have experience exchanging
ssh keys, etc.

It seems I have one client that refuses to connect via ssh. When I
exchanged keys and ran ssh -l root /[clientip]/ whoami the client
properly returns 'root'. When I sudo -u backuppc
/usr/share/backuppc/BackupPC_dump -v -f /[clienthostname]/ I get 'dump
failed: Unable to read 4 bytes'.

I have checked versions of rsync, ssh and openssh-server on both the
backuppc machine and the client. They are the same on both (both running
Ubuntu 12.04LTS.)

I have tailed the clients auth.log file it shows sshd[10109]:
Connection closed by /[backuppc-ip]/ [preauth] so, the backuppc machine
is closing the connection. (I might be tailing the wrong file, I am not
sure.)

Why won't this client connect?

Re: [BackupPC-users] I've Tried Everything

2012-02-16 Thread Robert E. Wooden

Every time I have created a new client I have to run:

/sudo -u backuppc /usr/share/backuppc/bin/BackupPC_dump -v -f
[insert_your_backupclient_name_here]/

This is the first suggestion at;

http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/backuppc/index.php?title=Troubleshooting

I am suggesting this because, if my memory serves me correctly, it
allows you to accept the ssh string. Just let the backuppc complete and
in a day or so backuppc will process the client properly. (I never
really researched why BackupPC does this. I just discovered that this
works for my first time backups and all works great after.) This has
always been my work around for this first backup failure issue.

First, I created wolping.sh (notice change from .bsh to .sh) and put it
into /etc/backuppc. Changed it permissions to allow execution (chmod 750
[filename].) Changed owner to backuppc:www-data. Found
NmbLookupFindHostCmd and made it blank.

Then set server pingpath to /etc/backuppc/wolping.sh. Created
/etc/ethers containing my client mac addresses (because I had manually
tested etherwake from server and it was working already so why change to
wakeonlan.)

And it worked for me.

 set PingPath to /etc/backuppc

On a vaguely related note, the FHS restricts /etc to static configuration

 course.

Answer to No. 2 question:Part 1: Because ten hours is, in my case,
sufficient time for it to have safely completed it's tasks.Part 2:
Been backing up my four computers like this since January, 2011. Had a
completed backup everyday for each computer.

I have a small system. If I had, for example, 10 computers to backup, I
would let backuppc server run all the time, backup during the night
(like I do now) and all would be great. But, like I said, I'm small, so

Now I just need to get my clients to shutdown when they have completed

[BackupPC-users] Getting backuppc to wol a client

2011-09-04 Thread Robert E. Wooden
I have occasionally tried to get BackupPC to wol my clients. This
weekend I got serious thanks to some activity on this forum.

Here is what I have got working this weekend.

I discovered this post:

/
I read through this article and it is so simple I had to try it. And, it
just works so now, I am saving energy and my family (specifically my
wife) is happier.

To further save energy, I set up my router (dd-wrt) to wake the BackupPC
machine.

What can I say, it just feels good, too!!

2011-09-03 Thread Robert E. Wooden
I have worked on this issue in the past for myself. Never really got it
completed. However, your email has me interested again and this is good
weekend to work on this.

So, last night I Googled BackupPC wol got some more info.

This is the article that started me off last January:
 http://www.backupcentral.com/phpBB2/two-way-mirrors-of-external-mailing-lists-3/backuppc-21/wol-how-it-works-for-me-74879/
This writing was initially a little robust for my needs, however he
brings up some very good ideas.

This article is from Ubunut-fr (France) and needed to be translated by
Google:
 http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/backuppc
It relates to Windows pc's, should that be what you need.

I, personally, am trying to wake and backup Ubuntu machines. I cannot
say if it works with other distros, but I don't see why it would not.

My next step is to move my wake-on-lan scripts over to my BackupPC
machine (the scripts are working on my desktop to wake my test machine.)

I'll continue now my testing and keep you posted as I go.
