[BackupPC-users] Backing up BackupPC

2016-07-13 Thread bpb21
Thanks for the reply - very informative! After looking it all over, I'm
strongly in the keep it simple camp. Since I'm running BackupPC on a pretty
low spec server, and I've got room for one more, I think option 1 you presented
is my best bet: 1) Run two BackupPC servers and have both back up the hosts
directly.

With this method I could continue to use low spec (read: cheap) servers and
alternate the backup days between the servers, giving time for more thorough
virus scanning of the backed up files.

Or maybe I could just spin up a virtual machine and back up the vm file like I
do with the other virtual machines.

Either way, good point on the hard links. Thanks for the info; that does
answer my question!

[BackupPC-users] Backing up BackupPC

2016-07-11 Thread bpb21
I've got BackupPC running on a CentOS server (working fine with Windows 10 PCs,
by the way!). I'd like to back up, on occasion, the data BackupPC stores.

For other servers, network shares, and CCTV footage, I use LTO-5 Ultrium tapes
and just use tar on the CentOS server connected to the tape drive; nothing
proprietary going on.

But, where does BackupPC store it's data? (I could probably figure that one
out pretty easily.) More of a question is, how would backing up the pooled
data to an external source work out? I have approx. 3.8 TB of data before
pooling and compression, approx 1 TB of data after pooling and compression.

So, I'd need to plan on 3.8 TB of external storage were I to back up BackupPC's
data, correct?

If I just used the regular tar commands to back up the data directory for
BackupPC, would it be able to preserve the user permissions? As in, could I
still tell what came from what PC if I just copied the data directory?

(I'm probably making this more complex than it is...)

[BackupPC-users] BackupPC - take a day off?

2016-05-18 Thread bpb21
Maybe it's possible to create a blackout period for that day? Not sure if one
should specify saturday or sunday as weekdays.

$Conf{BlackoutPeriods}
= [
{
hourBegin => 1.0,
hourEnd => 23.5,
weekDays => [0],
},
];

Kind regards
Pasi

Thanks! I think this is it. I completely overlooked this for all the other
settings.  Sounds promising.

[BackupPC-users] BackupPC - take a day off?

2016-05-18 Thread bpb21
And I may have just answered my own question; tell it to take the morning off,
or start the virus scan after pooling and compression, which usually ends by 1
or 1:10 a.m.

But, if anyone knows how to have BackupPC systems take Sunday as a rest day
while the scanner scans, that would be good.

[BackupPC-users] BackupPC - take a day off?

2016-05-18 Thread bpb21
I've got BackupPC running on a somewhat low spec server, but it's running fine
for the 60 or so PCs we've got in use. In fact, it's saved the day on numerous
occasions. The system specs are just good enough to fully support all the
usual BackupPC functions.

Issue: I want to use ClamAV to scan for viruses.

Problem: The server/hdds just aren't fast enough to complete the scan before
the next wave of backups starts, even if I block off several hours (10 pm - 7
am) to do the virus scan. BackupPC's pooling and compression, which works
fine, taxes the server too much with the virus scan running and that kicks in
around midnight or so regardless.

I had started a virus scan overnight and it's still trying to run this morning.
 Pooling and compression is also still trying to run as well, whereas
pooling/compression would usually be done by 1 a.m. or so without the virus
scan running.

Question: Is there a way to tell BackupPC to take the day off? That way I
could run ClamAV without BackupPC doing backups, pooling, or compression, at
the same time and complete the virus scan without interfering with the normal
BackupPC functions.

I see where you can easily tell it what hours of the day to wake up, but is
there an option where you can tell BackupPC what day(s) of the week to wake up
on? I'd like to take Sunday, for example, for BackupPC to cease its usual
functions (including pooling/compression) while I run a scan via crontab/script.

Otherwise standard, out of the box configuration for BackupPC - nothing fancy
going on, and about 60 client PCs.

Any ideas?

[BackupPC-users] Windows 7 cygwin:rsync updated configuration

2014-05-19 Thread bpb21
Sorry if this has been asked and answered, but I'm having a hard time figuring
this out.
I've got a BackupPC server running what I believe to be fine (installed
backuppc packages from CentOS repos - CentOS 6.5 OS).
But, I can't seem to find any coherent instructions for setting up a client on
Windows 7. I've tried with cygwin:rsync and I'm getting errors (uniform
clients) like Unknown module '/' and inet connect: Connection timed out. These
are on two different PCs with identical configurations.
This is also all on an internal LAN, so I don't really need SSH. If that's the
only way to get it going then I could use SSH, but at the moment it seems to be
an extra step unnecessary in my current environment.
Are there any guides or how-to's out there for Windows 7? All the ones I've
found are either for Windows XP or have dead links at rather critical points in
them (or both).
Any help appreciated! This is a very promising solution, but I don't know if
it's Win7 compatible.
