[Bacula-users] bacula has only backed up part of a directory?

2011-03-30 Thread dobbin
Hi, I considered that but volume retention is set to 65 days and the last full
backup was on the 1st

probably you have a problem with retention periods.
When you select 5 option on restore command you should able to see the entire
chain of backup (FDIII...)?
Maybe you full backup has already expired and the media has been recycled.

I think about Jumbo frames, but because it is a vlan-wide parameter and bacula

Re: [Bacula-users] What happen if I change the client of a job ? Multi node virtualization cluster

2011-03-30 Thread Hugo Letemplier
Hi,

I found no solution to do that.

What I think is to have a script on my virtualization cluster that
returns the value of the Bacula client that the job should use.

My first question is : How can I tell bacula to choose dynamically the
client according to the result of a script ?

My second question is : Can I safely/often change the client of a job
without having bacula going bad ? Does a client change will create a
rupture in my backups ? ( eg: Upgrading an incremental to full )

If someone have some idea, that would be very cool !

Thanks

 Hi,

 I am using a KVM and open vz virtualization cluster and I am going to
 do my backup directly from the host instead of from each virtual
 machine.
 So I increase my backup performance by reducing the virtual layers and
 also it will give me an advantage in managing LVM snapshots during my
 pre and post backup scripts.

 The difficulty is that VMs are supposed to be migrated on many nodes
 of the cluster.

 For the moment I have one File Daemon per node.

 I thought I could change the client of a job after a migration ?
 Nevertheless, I have some doubts:
 - It will be complicated to rewrite dir configuration after each
 migration, with obligation to reload the conf
 - Is there a mean to do that via bconsole ?
 - I think that changing the client will break the continuity of a job
 so it will create a new full like if the system detect a fileset
 change.

 - Have you another approach of the problem ?

 Thanks

 Hugo

[Bacula-users] Volume Retention / Use Duration

2011-03-30 Thread Uwe Schuerkamp
Hi folks,

I'm trying to wrap my head around the following setup:

- For a couple of clients / jobs, we'd like to store two full backups
on disk (weekly full, daily incremental)

- We'd also like to keep 14 incrementals around just in case we need
to do a point in time recovery.

The incremental part seems rather easy, I've defined a separate pool
like so (Bacula 5.0.2 on centos compiled from source):

Pool {
  Name = Online_Incremental
  Pool Type = Backup
  Recycle = yes
  AutoPrune = yes
  Volume Retention = 14 days
  Recycle  Oldest Volume = yes
  Maximum Volumes = 14
  Volume Use Duration = 1 day
  Label Format =Incr-
}

So we'd end up with a maximum of 14 volumes, using a new volume for
incrementals each day, recycling the old ones as they expire.

Now I was wondering how to go about the Full Pool definition. I'd like
to do full backups on the same day for all clients / jobs, so I've
come up with something like this:

Pool {
  Name = Online_Full
  Pool Type = Backup
  Recycle = yes
  AutoPrune = yes
  Volume Retention = 14 days
  Volume Use Duration = 6 days
  Recycle  Oldest Volume = yes
  Maximum Volumes = 3
  Label Format =Full-
}

But I'm unsure about the use duration. Is there a better way to
implement the above requirements?

Thanks in advance for your help comments,

Uwe

I rebuilt the catalog from what's in the volumes and the files are still not
there.

So it looks like bacula just decided not to backup these files. could it be
something to do with it having multiple copies of this directory with the same

 So we'd end up with a maximum of 14 volumes, using a new volume for
 incrementals each day, recycling the old ones as they expire.
You might run into issues with a 14d volume retention. The retention is
counted from the end of the last job written to the volume, and will
thus be at a point in time áfter the first job's scheduled time.
In the third week you might then not have any expired volumes that are
available for recycling.

You also have to keep in mind that incrementals form a chain. So if you
recycle the monday volume, you'll effectively lose your backup of all
files changed that day, that didn't change again later during the week.

 Now I was wondering how to go about the Full Pool definition. I'd like

Here you specify 3 volumes max, probably to make sure your incrementals
are still useful? (something you forgot to do for the incrementals
themselves I think)

Why the 6 day use duration though? You say you want to do all full
backups on the same day. Do the backups take multiple days to complete?
 But I'm unsure about the use duration. Is there a better way to
 implement the above requirements?

[Bacula-users] Moving a catalog due to performance issues

2011-03-30 Thread Dermot Beirne
Hello,
I am using Bacula 5.0.3 on ubuntu 9.04

I am have serious performance problems with migration speeds to tape.
I have used the btape speed command to test the throughput of the disk
to tape and it is achieving speeds of up to 6 times what my migration
speed is getting, so I don't think it's the hardware.

Someone asked if my catalog is on the same disks as the data being
migrated, and it is. I am not sure if this would be making such a
huge difference, but I'm looking into moving it off the Bacula server
to a remote server.

I have some questions on doing this:

1. Does it make sense. Could it be having such a serious impact on
the migration speeds, or should I look elsewhere first. In case it's
relevant, my Bacula server has a single Raid 5 array configured with
LVM into two logical volumes. The catalog is on one, and the data on
the other.

2. Does Bacula need to be on the box hosting the catalog, or is just
having MySQL installed enough.

3. Can I dump and reload the catalog db from the Bacula server to the
new remote server, change the catalog resource record, and continue
using that.

4. I am currently using mysql version:

Server version: 5.0.75-0ubuntu10.5 (Ubuntu)

I understand that unless I install this exact version on the remote
server, I'll have to recompile Bacula. Is this correct?

Thank you.
Dermot.

[Bacula-users] Restore (knock on wood) from Copy Jobs

2011-03-30 Thread Rodrigo Renie Braga

Currently, I have 2 Tape Storages configured on my Bacula Server, but I only

It could possibly impact performance. If spooling, or at least spooling
of attributes, is not being used, then this will cause disk thrashing,
where the r/w heads of drives are constantly having to be moved back and
forth to write to the catalog, then the data, then the catalog, then the
data, etc.

The simple solution is to turn on spooling and see if that makes a big
improvement. Otherwise, to move the catalog to another server is
possibly a solution, but it would then be limited by, and taking up,
network bandwidth. It would be better to have another disk in the same
server that was dedicated to the catalog.

 2. Does Bacula need to be on the box hosting the catalog, or is just
 having MySQL installed enough.

Just MySQL.

 3. Can I dump and reload the catalog db from the Bacula server to the

Yes, it is just a normal database.

No, that is not correct. Otherwise, a simple update of MySQL would
render Bacula unusable.

1. Yes. It's ok.
2. the bacula will do this for you. When you try to do restore, if the media
has already recycled the bacula will get files from copy.
  What type of disaster you want to protect? If the boths tape drives was
located in the same site you will not able do use it in fire or water
incident.
  But, if the tapes are stored off-site you will able to recreate catalog
with bscan with success. Some informations cannot be recreated with bscan,
but probably all you need will be available on catalog.

2011-03-30 Thread jerry lowry

Hello list,

I have setup a copy job that will copy with a 'selection type = oldest
volume' to a hot swapable disk so that I can move it offsite. The job
worked just fine up until it got to the end of the from volume, then it
failed. My question is: If it hits the end of the volume will it
automatically go to the next volume if the last jobid spans between two
volumes? If it does not follow to the next volume does the error below
make sense? (jobid 1661 spans to the next volume)

thanks,
jerry

Re: [Bacula-users] Restore (knock on wood) from Copy Jobs

2011-03-30 Thread Rodrigo Renie Braga
Thanks Kleber (Brazillian?)

We will keep these copy tapes on another building (~5km away). There they
have a reinforced safe that the company Itaipu Binacional already use for
the same purpose.
Also, daily I have a specific Job with a RunAfter directive that saves the
Catalog Database and Bacula config files on Dropbox (in the future, Amazon).

Back to my doubts, I read in the documentation that Bacula will upgrade my
Copy Jobs to normal Backup Jobs if the original Backups were purged or
recycled (just like you said). But still, If disaster happens and I restore
all my Database from my daily backup, the normal Backup Jobs won't be
actually recycled, just their tapes that won't be available..

In this case, all I need is to manually purge the original backups after I
restore the Database?

Thanks again!

2011/3/30 Kleber Leal kleber.l...@gmail.com

 1. Yes. It's ok.
 2. the bacula will do this for you. When you try to do restore, if the
 media has already recycled the bacula will get files from copy.

 Hello again everyone.

 Currently, I have 2 Tape Storages configured on my Bacula Server, but I
 only using one (which is enough to hold all my Full/Diff backups). I want to
 use the second Tape Storage to store Backups and take it's tapes somewhere
 else safe. I was thinking about using Copy Jobs, to copy every Full/Diff
 Backup ran on the first Tape Storage to the second.

 My doubts are:

1. Is this the right solution for my problem? Or, at least, will it
work?
2. In case of a (knock on wood) catastrophe and loose every tape on my
storages (except the ones that are on a safe place), how do I restore from
those tapes storing those Copy Jobs?

 For now, that's all.

 Thanks!

[Bacula-users] slot is repeatedly set to zero

2011-03-30 Thread Dan Langille
I've been able to reproduce this situation reliably. I'm using an autochanger
on FreeBSD 8.x within Bacula 5.0.3.

* Let a job start and ask for a new tape (in my case, part of the job writes to
an existing tape)
* Don't give Bacula the tape it is asking for
* label a new tape
* Bacula grabs it and starts writing to it immediately
* while the job continues, run the update slots command

Verify that the slot number has been updated in the database:

bacula=# select volumename, slot from media where slot  0 order by slot;
 volumename | slot
+--
 ETU022 |1
 ETU044 |2
 ETU047 |9
 ETU026 |   10
(4 rows)

Wait a while. Then verify again:

bacula=# select volumename, slot from media where slot  0 order by slot;
 volumename | slot
+--
 ETU022 |1
 ETU047 |9
 ETU026 |   10
(3 rows)

Run update slots again. Verify. Wait... this can be repeated several times
throughout the job.

My suspicion, yet to be verified: the UPDATE command being run as the job
progresses is setting the slot column when it should not be.

[Bacula-users] Scheduling Question

2011-03-30 Thread Randy Katz
Hi,

Now that I have used Bacula a full cycle (60 days) I have a question:

If backups are done Full (which expires after 60 days).
Then Diff each week and Incre each day where there is no Diff
Then restoring from any given date going back 60 days is not a problem
UNTIL the initial Full is replaced/overwritten. At that point all the
Diffs and Incre
up to the next Full cannot be restored (as far as I can see anyways) and
that makes
logical sense as there is no base to base the selection on. So how would
I retain the initial
Full until the next Full (let's say first Sunday 2 months later) cycles
back so not to
obviate all the Diff/Incre between?

If I am asking the question upside down please correct me. And please
bear with if
the answer is glaringly obvious! I reread this a few times and what I
really want is:

1st of month 1 Full
Diff each Sunday after
Incre each day other then Sunday
1st of month 3 Full
Expire the Initial Full when the 2nd one has no more increments (Diff/Incre)
before it.

Not sure how to translate to the schedule/expire times though.

Thanks in advance,
Randy

Re: [Bacula-users] SQL Query to get size of all Full/Diff Backups

2011-03-30 Thread Dan Langille
On Mar 30, 2011, at 4:46 PM, Rodrigo Renie Braga wrote:

 Hello list.

 Can someone send me the SQL Query to get the size that all my Full, Diff and

 me a SQL Query.

 I'm going to use this to know when should I get more tapes for my Storage...

The OP contacted me on IRC and I suggested they post here. They were asking me
about this page:

  https://services.unixathome.org/bacula/

SELECT P.Name as name,
   pg_size_pretty( sum( coalesce( m.volbytes, 0 ) )::bigint) as size,
