[Bacula-users] Marking new Volume in Error Catalog

Normally it just creates these new volumes and goes on, but now it just
mark the new volume as an Error Device. But why?

Thx,

Re: [Bacula-users] Job Type Copy

2013-01-09 Thread Olivier L.
thanks a lot for your answer :)

I missed the part of the documentation that explain type change of the
copy job: the moment the primary backup expires the copy gets upgraded
to a normal Backup Job and its available for restore.

that's all I needed, thank you.

I saw this when the copy jobs are running and it's OK for me.
But my explanation is that i have after the end of the copy on the tape.

My problem is that BAT dosen't see job type copy job for a restore.

Correct I think you should read-up on how copy jobs work. That you cannot
restore from the copy job is how things are designed and why it is a different
type of Job in the catalog. A copy is a copy in all senses that you can only
restore from the primary backup not from a copy. But the moment the primary
backup expires the copy gets upgraded to a normal Backup Job and its available
for restore. If you have a Disk2Disk2Tape backup scheme for which copy Jobs
were primary designed this also makes sense. You backup to disk and as long
as that primary backup is available you want to use that as the copy on tape
is always slower to restore. But the moment your disk copy expires and if you
configured your config right the tape (Copy)Job should still not have expired
and it gets upgraded to a normal Backup Job and from then on you can restore
from that Job. Same is true when you do have multiple copies each time the
 parent
of the copy expires the child gets upgraded.

Being able to restore from a copy is not implemented as far as I know and is
a feature that might come eventually.

query.sql.sample seems to be standard naming convention.

[Bacula-users] Multi-Device vChanger

2013-01-09 Thread Amit L
Hi,

I am setting up a dual usb sata device vchanger with bacula and had a

magazine = /mnt/vchanger/bay2

initmag 1 and 2 is fine.

Loading the magazines works ok.
0 - /mnt/vchanger/bay1
1 - /mnt/vchanger/bay2

label barcodes on autochanger device(0) looks like it creates barcodes
for bay0 and bay1.

Hence when I try to label barcodes on device(1), it says the labels
have already been created.

Is this the correct functionality?

Thanks

Yes it's all one changer you can have as many drives attached to it as
you want you only label once per changer.

Since you mentioned USB attached look at by UUID it makes things more
reliable.

Good to know.

Does this mean when I want to restore in the future, I will need to make sure
both disks are mounted at the same time?

Or will bacula let me know which magazine I need and I will mount the
respective disk and update slots will do the rest?

Thanks again.

Hi Amit, here is a how-to that I wrote a year or so ago. It includes more than
you are asking for (encrypted backups on removable drives for one), and is
specific to eSATA drives, but the rest should be applicable, adaptable and
possibly helpful to you (vchanger, udev, autofs)

Take a look and let me know if this helps. Comments and suggestions are
welcome of course.

You probably need to edit the mtx-changer script. It does not appear
to detect when a slot is loaded for your system.

I expect you need to test the functionality of mtx directly and edit
the file /usr/libexec/bacula/mtx-changer to make sure the load command
and other mtx-changer commands are working.

See if loading tapes works reliably manually via mtx. Then test if you
can load tapes via mtx-changer. If both of these work look at the
configuration setting Maximum Changer Wait. Although I would expect
a 5 minute load to be sufficient.

[Bacula-users] Bacula tapes marked FULL too early - VolBytes too low

2013-01-09 Thread UserMOP
It would seem the problem resolved itself.

All our tapes are now getting full at 410GB and over. No tape is under 400GB so
far (about 10 of them swapped around). Do not believe it was tape drive itself.

All we've done to the machine was regular ubuntu upgrades and machine restarts.
Occasionally we would clean the drive with a cleaning tape (even when not
asked). In addition, we ran the tapes through rewinding and weof process before
running each nightly Full backup (did not bother to do this for Differential
sets).

We are happy, atleast for a moment.

Nothing.

It's only called when you run the query command and if query.sql is

Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula tapes marked FULL too early - VolBytes too low

2013-01-09 Thread Alan Brown
FWIW: I had similar problems with a large batch of LTO5 tapes recently.

Discussion with the tech support guys at Overland brought out the
information that sometimes they see this on new tapes due to dust
contamination during assembly (or insufficient removal of loose
particles during manufacture) but the tapes are usually ok after a
couple of passes.

Apparently this is why they sell pre cleaned media for their changers
- and there's also a healthy market for tape polishing machines amongst
Big Tape users.

There was enough crud in this particular batch (HP tapes) to degrade one
of the drives quite badly (down to under 800Gb recorded on 1500Gb raw
capacity), so we swapped it out under support contract. The other drives
in the changer all recovered by themselves.

Also: Because LTO media uses a serpentine layout, rewind doesn't do
anything - the end of the tape is also the beginning of the tape. If you
want a cartridge to spool end-to-end, you'll need to seek to end of media.

Cleaning tapes are abrasive. Don't use them unless the drive asks for
them. LTO drives and media have internal head and path wiper mechanisms
which keep things under control under normal circumstances - cleaning
tapes are a last resort.

them, is not to expensive no issue, my question is simple:
Once I start using the windows binaries, I need to contact them for
support or this list is still open for help for windows clients?

My first reaction was: Don't ask to ask, just ask.

And to get good replies,
it is wise to read http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

[Bacula-users] PGSQL: make_catalog_backup.pl dumps everything?

2013-01-09 Thread Wolfgang Denk
Hello,

I noticed that running make_catalog_backup.pl with a PostgreSQL
database runs pg_dump -c (i. e. without specifying a database),
which results in a full dump of the whole DB server, including far
more than the Bacula catalog.

Is this a bug, or intentional? If the latter, what is the rationale?

I'm running Bacula 5.2.12-3 on Fedora 17 systems.

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Wolfgang Denk
