[Bacula-users] Tapes with state Error

2006-12-20 Thread Chris Crowther

Hi People,

I have a couple of tapes in my library that are flagged as having errors
on - both for having a different number of volfiles to what Bacula
thinks they should have, one out in both cases. Is there any way of
fixing this?

Failing that how do you go about returning the tapes to the scratch pool
so I can use them again. I'm guessing I'd need to purge all the jobs
associated with the media and remove the media from the pool they're
currently in - I'd just like a little confirmation that's correct before
I do it.

You can use the bconole 'update media' command to fix the Volume Files and
Volume Status in the catalog to match the tapes. I suggest also using 'delete

Cheers.

It would be useful if you can figure out how/when it happened too (e.g. if you
have a bad tape).

It would; the fact that someone managed to knock the cable to the
library loose may have had something to do with it, but I'm not certain;
it wouldn't really account for two tapes being in error. Both tapes are
in the same pool though, which only services a single client; one which
is on the other side of a flakey connection, could have some impact, I
guess.

I'll check both the tapes for errors though.

[Bacula-users] Recovering data without a .bsr or db entries (feel free to start laughing now)

2006-08-01 Thread Chris Crowther
Hey peeps,

So, because I cocked up my config and didn't notice, Bacula purged a job
pretty much right after finishing it, mea culpa.

This wouldn't be a major problem if it wasn't for the fact that the job
in question was the contents of Documents and Settings on my
workstation, because I was doing a re-install...and I noticed afterwards
(yeah, mea culpa again).

I've removed the two tapes it used from the library, so it can't
physicaly lose the data. I'm wondering if I have anyway of getting the
data back off the tapes. I also took a copy of the pgsql data directory
as soon as a I realised; I've taken at look at the page files and it
seems like the data may still be there (pgsql hadn't vacuumed yet).

Anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed? Or am I just going to
have to chalk this up as one of those lessons that mean you don't do it
again.

In many ways I'm just glad I am super paranoid and copied the contents
of my development trees to another system as well.

You can automaticly re-run failed levels again. If it succesfully
ran the backup and then you manually deleted it I'm guessing you'll
have to manually run the full backup yourself; just run the job from
the console and modify the parameters before telling it it's OK to run.

[Bacula-users] Re-Run Missed Levels with split storage...

2006-06-12 Thread Chris Crowther
Hi All,

I seem to have run across a problem when storing Full and
Differential backups on tape and Incrementals on disk, when combined
with re-running missed levels.

If Bacula upgrades the job to either Full or Differential from an
Incremental, because of a missed job, it tries to use the wrong
storage device, ie it uses the File one that it would have been
using for the Incremental job.

It does change the Pool to the correct one, probably because I've
told the Job which Pools are used for Full and Differential. On a
normal scheduled backup, without any problems, the storage is
overriden within the Schedule (multiple jobs use the tape library
for their Full and Differentials, but there's several Pools, so I
set which Pool a job should be using in the Job then just modify the
storage in the schedule).

Is it the case that you can't combine the two; or if you do you have
to put up with a Full backup going to where an Incremental would?

Re: [Bacula-users] License question

Hugo Schlebnik wrote:

I am indeed talking about the binary, not the source. I have no
intention of modifying the bacula client code, but rather integrating it
(as is) into a larger, proprietary application. Would that mean I'd
have to release source code for the larger application? If so, that's a
bit of a deal-breaker, which would be a shame, since I'd really like to
 use bacula.

My understanding of the GPL is that you're only required to make the
source code available for the GPL'd application, and any changes you
made to source code, if you're distributing the binary generated
from those changes to 3rd party.

Where it gets complicated is when you have a propietry program
interacting with a GPL'd program. If the complete package is being
sold to 3rd parties then you may or may not need to release the
proprietry program under the GPL as well; it depends on the level of
the relationship between the two components. Merely invoking a
GPL'd application (e.g. Bacula) would probably not require you to
make the source available.

If you're modifying GPL'd software for purely personal/internal use
then I don't think you have to make any changes available to anyone
else, so long as you're not distributing binaries generated from
GPL'd code (modified or otherwise).

I'm assuming the same would be true if you were modifying GPL'd
software as a contract programmer, where the modified code is only
going to be used within the company you're contracting for.

Anyways, the GPL FAQ probably tells you what you need to know:

http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html

The bit on Mere Aggreation is most likely what you want to read.
