[Bacula-users] Restoring from tapes notin library

2009-05-14 Thread Christopher Dick

I have a restore job I need to do, but the volumes with the data are not
currently in the library. As I have only one mail slot, it will probably need
to be done in two steps. The drive currently has the last used appendable
volume mounted.

Do I need to release the storage and update slots to get Bacula to successfully
utilize the mailslot to access the first volume, or can I just stick the tape
in the mailslot and tell it to update to run the restore job? And then, I am
hoping it will read from the mailslot, and return the volume to the mailslot,
allowing me to pull it out and replace it with the next volume needed. Is this
all a correct assumption? Do I at least have the right idea?

Thanks!

Chris

Its all up to you. I mean if the volume that bacula wants is not in
the changer it will prompt you for it. After this happens insert the
volume and then update slots and the mount the device in bacula.

Okay, so then here is the run of events as I understand them:

1. issue restore command
2. get prompted for needed volumes
3. insert first needed volume in mailslot
4. issue update slots
5. Bacula ejects current appendable volume from drive
6. Bacula loads needed volume and reads
7. Bacula ejects first volume and returns it to mailslot
8. remove first volume and insert second volume
9. issue update slots
10. Bacula retrieves second volume from mailslot and reads
11. Bacula returns second volume to mailslot
12. Remove second volume from mailslot
13. Issue update slots to inform Bacula that mailslot is empty

Is this correct then?

Sorry to be such a bother.

Chris

Okay, so then here is the run of events as I understand them:

 1. issue restore command
 2. get prompted for needed volumes

Bacula will discover that the needed volume (not volumes) is not in
the changer then it will block and prompt you (in the messages even
by email if you have that set up) to insert the volume. It will also
unload whatever volume is in the drive that it selected.

You insert the volume.

 3. insert first needed volume in mailslot

Then wait till the changer has finished inventory.

 4. issue update slots
 5. Bacula ejects current appendable volume from drive

No. Bacula will probably remain blocked. This is fixed by issuing the
mount command inside the bacula console.

 6. Bacula loads needed volume and reads
 7. Bacula ejects first volume and returns it to mailslot

Bacula will put the tape back in the mailslot, then prompt for the
next volume. Just repeat what you did above ..

 8. remove first volume and insert second volume
 9. issue update slots
 10. Bacula retrieves second volume from mailslot and reads
 11. Bacula returns second volume to mailslot
 12. Remove second volume from mailslot
 13. Issue update slots to inform Bacula that mailslot is empty

 Is this correct then?

I added my comments..

For some reason, Bacula is not updating the contents of the mailslot. It
acknowledges that there are 20 slots in the library, but only lists 19 of them
when displaying the update slots output. Do I need a specific parameter on
the update command other than update slots?

Thanks!

Try update slots a second time. I will explain if it worked.

I issued a second update slots command (and a third, actually), but it is
still not showing the needed volume listed in slot 20 - the mailslot. When it
says Issuing Autochanger 'list' command, it only outputs the catalog record
for 19 slots and their resident volumes.

Thanks for working through this with me.

Okay that is not the issue I have with my changer then. Did the
mailslot ever work with bacula? If not you probably need to customize
your mtx-changer script to match the output of your mailslot. You may
want to search the archives for your model perhaps someone already
solved that and posted an updated mtx-changer script. For my changer
Exabyte Magnum 224 I required a slight modification of that script as
well. Basically if the output of mtx -f status does not fit what the
script expects you have to use sed to rewrite the output.
