Re: Can't launch BBEdit

2021-07-19 Thread BGalindo
by the way, I had the very same problem in bbedit last week, searching this
group helped me find the answer! thanks for this dialogue.

I tried to execute a complex grep pattern in playground (which I realized
too late I could greatly simplify :-) )on a .json dataset file and bbedit
choked, I know it choked because I gave it a couple hours on my quad-pro
and it was still hung, same when I tried to restart.

thanks for the info on the startup options! I love bbedit, it is a vital
tool in my dev work, and pattern playground is handy, I just realized to be
careful with the complexity of my patterns if the playground is pointed at
a large open file.

Hey Lewis,

Give it a relevant tag like ‘BBEdit.Manual’, so Spotlight can find it easily.

tag:BBEdit.Manual

And since you’re a bit of a shell-head there's always:

mdfind -onlyin ~/Library/ "(kMDItemDisplayName = '*bbedit user manual*'cdw || \
kMDItemAlternateNames = '*bbedit user manual*'cdw) && \

It's also on the BBEdit website

https://www.barebones.com/support/bbedit/manual.html

which I found via 'bbedit manual pdf' into my search engine of choice.

I know first-hand that it's hard to think of some of these things when
you're very focused on trying to fix an issue — plus I've *had* access to
the manual and missed answers to questions I've had -- so this is not meant

FWIW - I also keep a folder with software manuals at ~/Dropbox/Bookshelf/
which has come in handy over the years.

For general reference, if you've asked BBEdit to bite off more than it can
reasonably chew :-), please see the section "Launching BBEdit" (pg 44 in the
current edition) within Chapter 3 of the user manual[*]:

Launching BBEdit

effects, overriding any startup options set in the Application preference

OK, I got it back. I THINK holding the shift key down while BBEdit launched
stopped it from doing whatever it was doing before because all the windows came
up right away including the 20,000,000 line file and the search playground
window, but it wasn't processing.

Or it was coincidence and BBEdit did something internal after being force-quit
several times.

The reason I think it is doing the search is the the playground window is the
front window and it not drawn completely, only the outline of that window
appears.

I'll leave it for longer and see what happens, but I think it's dead.

Can't launch BBEdit

2021-04-10 Thread @lbutlr
So, I was working on trying to write a regex for some data and using the umm…
search playground? Whatever it is called.

And I entered a search query which I expected would match several individual
characters per line on a Gile containing 50-100 lines of sample data taken from
the source file.

However, I was ACTUALLY searching over the real data files with … 20,000,000
lines.

:)

Needless to say, this did not go well and the next day I forced BBEDit to quit.

But when I relaunch it, it is still doing the same search, I guess.

Two questions, can I find where BBedit has the temporary unsaved files that are
open so I can recover them or set them aside and how do I open BBEdit without
it doing the playground search again?

It very efficiently goes into "not responding" mode almost immediately after
launching.
