Re: [beagleboard] Kali 2020.4 linux for BBB not found on download page

2021-02-01 Thread Lee T. Davy
2020.4 fails to upgrade java 11 from 2020.3 due to loadable library issue.
This means the Java 11 run time environment currently has errors for ca
certificates due to this during upgrade for 2020.4

#
# A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment:
#
# SIGILL (0x4) at pc=0xb414ffe0, pid=14550, tid=14559
#
# JRE version: OpenJDK Runtime Environment (11.0.10+9) (build
11.0.10+9-post-Debian-1)
# Java VM: OpenJDK Server VM (11.0.10+9-post-Debian-1, mixed mode, serial
gc, linux-)

Could not load hsdis-arm.so; library not loadable; PrintAssembly is disabled

This could explain why BBB is not in the listed 2020.4 downloads
so my advice is use my 2020.2 BBB torrent link without upgrades as
it will at least be a valid and working install.

Re: [beagleboard] Kali linux for BBB not found on download page

2021-01-30 Thread Lee T. Davy
I downloaded the Kali for Beabeaglebone Black when 2020.2 was available so
my thought is that it was incidentally built and contributed.
The torrent will find an active peer daemon to resurrect it's existence
though only one was found.
If I left my daemon running then it also would be propagated.
The sum256 I have is from 2020.2 official kail.com build by community
member.
I have applied updates from kali-rolling and it is now at 2020.4 as is
available for all but BBB.

LIVE DVD 2020.4 for amd64 is a cover topic and DVD is attached to hard copy
on Linux Format Issue 270
<https://issuu.com/futurepublishing/docs/lxf270.digital_mfmsampler> I found
it at Barnes and Noble retail this month.

~$ uname -a
Linux kali 4.9.147 #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon May 11 18:38:01 UTC 2020 armv7l
GNU/Linux

I have 187 upgrades today applying as I write this.

$ cat /etc/os-release
PRETTY_NAME="Kali GNU/Linux Rolling"

Re: [beagleboard] Kali linux for BBB not found on download page

2021-01-29 Thread Lee T. Davy
Torrent had 1 peer but completed successfully in 1 hour.
I have a valid copy but not running torrent daemon but it works anyway
using the attached torrent file with deluge <https://deluge-torrent.org/>.

2019-11-07 Thread Lee T. Davy
Thank Robert.
I found the Github commit comments work for my purposes as I learn how to
find and read the Cloud 9 Examples.
The examples replace bone101 and are work in progress especially for the
Pocket beagle Capes with Mikroe Click boards.
I have forked my own copy of the cloud9 examples after I saw them updated
with apt upgrade.
They are private at my Github account to use as a journal for this NEWBIE.

[beagleboard] What ways are updates announced or discussed ? I am waiting for or learning to contribute to community.

2019-11-03 Thread Lee T. Davy
I have done regular Linux (Ubuntu) system management but the Beaglebone is
a new animal.

I have used laptops and desktops running for years but the Beaglebone is an
embedded system and has new
concepts to learn and discover.
I can plug things in but need to modify key files to enable or add the
functionality.

I use the TechLab and GamePup capes for pocket beagle to explore this
culture.
I am also using Mikroe click boards to have a simple plug in device like
USB on mainline systems.

Today I did my customary update and started to see interesting changes that
may have applied to my learning.

The following packages will be upgraded:
  bb-cape-overlays doc-beaglebone-getting-started
2 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 5,981 kB of archives.
After this operation, 6,144 B of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]

Where and or how do I find what this did for my devices if applicable ?

Is anyone else learning using pocket beagle capes from GHI or Mikroe Click
boards ?

[beagleboard] Notes about Black , Green and Pocketbeagle GamePup and TechLab cape learning

2019-10-24 Thread Lee T. Davy
Will Beaglebone ever replace Raspberry Pi for learning about computers ?

In 2014 I joined a makerspace in Sommerville, Ma USA Artisans Asylum near
MIT so there were makers from local tech colleges as mentors.
The in house backgrounds were friendly and knowledgeable.
They readily share their knowledge.
I began in 2014 to want a home CNC based on EMC
<http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.4/html/common_Getting_EMC.html> (later LinuxCNC
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LinuxCNC>, Machinekit
<https://www.machinekit.io/about/>) like the Black Foot CNC
<https://buildyourcnc.com/blackFoot48v40.aspx>

Costs were an obstacle but I could join the makerspace as a volunteer and
use the tools available.
On Wednesday night there was and still is a public welcome Circuit Hacking
electronics night <https://artisansasylum.com/calendar/>among other classes
<https://artisansasylum.com/classes/>.
I learned about Arduino for my first device in three decades since being
into PDP-11 computers at Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC).
That was the X11 in the 1980's
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_Window_System>

I asked where I could replace the large PC with smaller for a smaller CNC
and was directed to Beaglebone Black <http://beagleboard.org/black> as a
better choice than
Raspberry Pi on Arduino.

I bought a Black and plugged it in and have never regretted the decision.
Later in 2016 I attended some Meet Up meetings to learn about 3D printers
and found out about Beaglebone Green <https://beagleboard.org/green> used
in the Phidias LLC Athena
<https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/folders/0B_BNe4kEHPwFd0pBeFU4YXBlZjA>
(<-Notes
here).

Now in 2019 I want to find a group and take notes on how to make a video
game.
I plan to use the new Pocket BeagleBone capes with GamePup
<https://beagleboard.org/capes> as a game controller over Wifi and
Bluetooth with off the shelf devices
as I am not into designing and building circuits.
The TechLab <https://beagleboard.org/techlab> is better for learning as it
is designed to support e-ale classes <https://e-ale.org/> already being
taught.

*I want to start a discussion here about why chose Beaglebone over
Raspberry Pi or the inverse choice.*

*Also, since I am famous for confusing things with too many topics I want
to start notations for collaborating on the GamePup controller.*

I have tried to use BBB.io/p for teaching concepts as I learn how to do the
stuff I want.
I have already run into problems starting and making changes on my
Hackster.io projects that appear
on my BBB.io profile so I have created a Slack and Discord approach to do
the notations.

First thing is to get a fix for the Game Pup frame buffer flipped RED and
Green colors as was done by others on Adafruit Arduino code.
After that will be adding battery, Wifi, Bluetooth, MP3 and Midi
capabilities to the cape.

*I play GAMES as you see in the hidden links in this message and am looking
for others to become contributors in*
*this decade (or more) project.*

My email is Play at Cool Games dot Net as I am doing business
as Cool Games Network (since 2000) as it has evolved from Event Video
Multimedia (since 1990)

Thanks in advance
Lee T. Davy

Re: [beagleboard] Re: Pocket Beaglebone showing significant progress for those of you watching GamePup

2019-10-23 Thread Lee T. Davy
Jason,
I started in computers without formal training.
First job was building CRT terminals with out a computer to connect.
Later learn hardware testing and the automated circuit testing with DEC
PDP-8 paper tape and no disk.
After that used in circuit function tester for DEC PDP-11.
Then taught PDP-11 OS called RSX-11m which is much like X11 and then in
1995 Linux.
My name de plume Event Video is because of preference for TV and video over
the computer in the box.
TechLab has Linux but no video so not as attractive as GamePup.
Once GamePup had a working video I began to like it but setting date was
tedious so I added the RTC-5 from Mikroe
rather than build something with no skills to design and build hardware.
I started with sysgen on Linux in 1995 on terminal console then X11 so I
prefer that operating system over MAC or Windows (by far).
I still plug things in like I know how to do but not designing circuits as
is expected for embedded systems.
I also would learn by doing and never breadboard which again goes against
the gist of embedded system learning.

As I progress I use various journaling tools like Slack and text files.
Here at Google Groups I can share my progress and maybe make a freind or
two at the same level of skills.

The Midi music is still plug and play and my requirements are significantly
beyond the small SBC systems for
expressing ideas.
I plan to use virtual reality head mounted stereo display so the Black fits
that better with HDMI.
The GamePup will be the game controller when Wifi and bluetooth are plugged
into both devices.

My favorite hardware was Sega with Dreamcast being easiest to play with
display on the controller as I envision the GamePup for Android TV at
Google Stadia (more users than Linux on Black).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamcast

Who was Sonic <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvvZaBf9QQI>?
Maybe Boris will chase that Hedgehog in an Open Source Blender Movie !
I could imagine 3D printed <https://beagleboard.net/project/boris/> and VR
with Beagleboard AI embedded real time strategies as Midi theme songs play !
That's Cool Games Network and Event Video Multimedia in an open source
hackerspace !
Just need the sources and the community !

2019-10-14 Thread Lee T. Davy
Almost a month and "device tree" is starting to make sense.
I ordered the Click cape for Beaglebone Black running MACHINEKIT.
Also picked RTC 5 and 9 DOF 1996 Click boards as they seem to be already
included in overlay directory
for both Pocket and Black.

Initial test: 9 DOF <https://vaishnav98.github.io/GSoC19/mpu9dof.html>will
be used to control png orientation on Gamepup display.
Techlab with RTC 5 will be variation of gsim blog example that used RTC 6
<https://vaishnav98.github.io/GSoC19/rtc.html>.

I have the Moto Z Play which is mentioned in Greybus at LWN
<https://lwn.net/Articles/715955/> so wanted to do stuff with it's SDK.
Linux Ubuntu Studio 19.04 -> Android Studio -> Moto Mod Hat adapter -> Pi
Click bonnet (1/2 hat for Pi zero) -> MP3 Click !
Almost making sense after 35 years away from assembly language (Macro 11)
and sysgens for PDP-11 running RSX-11S.
I only built analog radios in 1970 decade.
Both were self taught skills as it was before classes were as easily
available in colleges.

Latest update is contacting Summer of Code 2019 developer to help write the
manifest for the MP3 Click
https://vaishnav98.github.io/GSoC19/contact.html

If anyone else has the desire to get Midi music from Gamepup then we are in
this together.

Current using Akai MPK mini Play and LPD8 for USB Midi I/O.
https://www.akaipro.com/mpk-mini-play-mpkminiplay

Using timidity or pocket beagle wastes cpu on music tracks.
Atari did this in the 1980's using MT32

I have no knowledge of DEVICE TREE (yet) so I will be delayed but can make
it appear to work and pass on to those that may have the knowledge to
fixing up in the device tree.
Again, I am not a programmer only a retired end user that can help test and
point out what is not as it should be.

[beagleboard] Re: Pocket Beaglebone showing significant progress for those of you watching GamePup

2019-08-17 Thread Lee T. Davy
In case you missed it, you need a slightly different command to display
this new file.

sudo fbi -T 1 --noverbose BeagleFromLogo\ for\ PupCic.png

Sean,
I also tried the TechLab IMG on GamePup and got a login screen on GamePup.

Re: [beagleboard] Re: Game Pup cape for Pocket Beagle has no examples that I can find !

2019-08-05 Thread Lee T. Davy
Sean,
I remember I modified the TechLab IMG (below) for GamePup to make uSD image
work with display and not sure I had originally tested with IOT.

My original IMG was (like you) from last spring on Pocket Beagle before I
had Game Pup and Tech Lab.
I am as confused as you so I am starting with workshop IMG to view and
understand the process used to make an embedded IMG work.

Started at http://beagleboard.org/techlab then switched between capes.

I have been watching and reading the stuff at the link (above) to
Embedded Apprentice Linux Engineer seminars

Also I will order another PB for mating to GamePup exclusively for
re-flashing tests.

Re: [beagleboard] Re: Game Pup cape for Pocket Beagle has no examples that I can find !

2019-08-03 Thread Lee T. Davy
Sean,
I am getting a display as a login screen correctly with IoT img by manually
editing and including this overlay line in boot/uEnv.txt on uSD.
After boot I can login as debian via ssh or display with USB keyboard.

# Game Pup overlay on Workshop image
uboot_overlay_addr0=/lib/firmware/BBORG_GAMEPUP-00A2.dtbo

The e-ale workshop img has a different font but also gives the etc/issue
login message and with keyboard I can login.
YouTube e-ale 2018 is very informative for learning about the BaconBits
variation called TechLab but nothing related to GamePup display.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGYJ6-t7fDZ6VgbKPTeAXOBcnAk9Fonr_

Not sure yet what a full graphical desktop LQXT img would do with 128x160
display (which is using this https://www.adafruit.com/product/358 spec)

Not sure where you are hung "talking" to screen.
I am learning using the co-product TechLab which has no screen with only
one Pocket beagle between them.
I will be ordering another with fresh separate uSD using "latest Image" for
IoT and LQXT from Beaglebone.org/latest-images .

Wish me luck and stay tuned.
BTW,
I am using Linux Ubuntu Studio 19.04 host and have set it as internet
portal / sharing to USB Pocketbeagle "gadget".
My way is different than described and is hard coded to the serial number
of the Pocket Beagle with individually host renamed for DNS in browser.
I also hard code in etc/hosts as static IP.
I will have two devices simultaneously networked on USB hub.
 One TechLab and one GamePup.

[beagleboard] Game Pup cape for Pocket Beagle has no examples that I can find !

2019-07-08 Thread Lee T. Davy
All Pocket Beagle programmers...

I have asked everywhere for a while but am getting nowhere.

"Has anyone found or written code for the GHI Game Pup cape for Pocket
Beagle that uses the display ?"

GHI has no support contracted or provided as they just supply the hardware
for beagleboard.org.
I have tried chat and email to addresses that appear to be active but after
two weeks no one has answered my plea.

Is THIS the place to ask or am I lost in the ozone of new products for
Pocket Beagle with no software to begin using ?

My application is a Midi Juke Box that connects the USB to an Akai MPK mini
play (for example) and uses aplaymidi from the microSD which
is selected by buttons and display on the LCD screen (160x128).

Also it will route Midi USB with aconnect while being battery powered.

I also want to use the MP3 Click to play General Midi and convert MID files.

I am not a programmer and want to use standalone non-Visual Studio tool
chain.
Ideally it would be with Node.JS as it is already configured for bone101.

I have tried the UI that is the web interface and can blink lights and
simple stuff.
That tool has no development or scripting abilities.

Thanks in advance for responding.

[beagleboard] USB only connected needs Time , Date, nameserver also device icon not shown on Ubuntu

2018-05-22 Thread Lee T. Davy
I just started with the Pocket Beagle after many years with Black first and
later Green in Phidias LLC 3D printer.
Previously I had Ethernet connection so I could get time with a command
after logging in.

I changed the host name to coolpbb to differentiate from the 3D printers
beaglebone.
I added the 127.0.0.1 coolpbb to /etc/hosts to avoid confusion as well
I will test when both beagles are on the same laptop then later when routed
through to LAN and WAN.

For now with Pocket Beagle I set date manually.
date --set 2018-05-22
then wait for exact second on host panel before pressing return
date --set 07:20:10

First question, what would be the exact commands for the USB only network
name service and sharing ?
Ideally I would want it to get the time automatically at boot without
adding any hardware such as RTC.

I want the host Ubuntu Studio laptop to serve the time and package manager
to the USB only connected Pocket Beagle.
Is this possible once networking is configured it will allow adding NTP
package ?

Next question is why doesn't the autorun.inf line pointing to
Docs/beagle.ico work on Ubuntu Studio 18.04 ?

Next, where is the directory seen on host found when on the ssh command
line login to debian at coolpbb.local ?

Thanks in advance to all who rightfully help but a pox on those who guess
incorrectly !
