[beagleboard] How can remove the write-protection on the BeagleBone ?

2018-08-30 Thread Ichrak Mansour
I'm using the Beaglebone in IoT mode with the latest debian image.

I tried to modify the name of the Beaglebone disk and modifying its icon,
as I need to modify start.htm, when I try to modify it or copy an image, an
alert is displayed this disk is write-protected,

so how can I remove this protection? and how can Ichange start.htm?

[beagleboard] Linux Kernel failed to build: ERROR: no certificate subject alternative name matches

2018-08-30 Thread not you
I am following this guide to install Linaro on my Ubuntu 18.04 machine:
https://www.digikey.com/eewiki/display/linuxonarm/BeagleBone+Black#BeagleBoneBlack-ARMCrossCompiler:GCC

Thanks to Robert's help, I got Linaro 7.3.1 successfully installed. I am
now stuck at building the Linux Kernel. I checked out the long term /
real-time branch using:

git checkout origin/am33x-rt-v4.9 -b tmp

And proceed to building it:

./build_kernel.sh

It failed to build, giving out these status report:

So I got a few questions:
1. It installs Linaro 6.4.1 tho I already have 7.3.1. Why does this

2. What should I do to get it built?

Which of your 3 emails should i reply to?

Yes, it's RO but the answer is complex, to change it, i want to make
sure i reply to the correct thread, that way users can use the search

I did the first part and get Linaro 7.3.1 instead. Testing with ${CC}gcc
succeeded, so I suppose that is the case. Am I doing it wrong?

That was for building u-boot... Currently the kernel build script does
not parse the environment variable CC.. I suppose it "could" with some
patches written, but today NOPE..

So if you want to bypass the pre-choosen compiler you need to open
"system.sh" and see the examples, then correctly add your's..

#ARM GCC CROSS Compiler:
#if CC is not set, a known working linaro based gcc compiler will be
downloaded and utilized.
#CC=/bin/arm-none-eabi-
#CC=/bin/arm-linux-gnueabi-
#CC=/bin/arm-linux-gnueabihf-

It has some error detection, so if you don't properly set the
path/etc, it will just default to the build-in version..

These don't match..

just change:

bb_uart1_pins: pinmux_bb_uart1_pins {

Just looked it up, in the pps node you have:

gpios = <&gpio1 16 0>;

However P9_12 is:

gpio1 28

So swap the 16 for 28

Re: [beagleboard] BeagleBone Black GPS PPS and Chrony for time sync

2018-08-30 Thread Thomas
Robert,
I can't thank you enough for helping me through this. There is very little
information available online regarding this procedure with this kernel
version...

First, I made the edit that you recommended.. Now, the BBB reboots and I can
see NEMA data coming from the GPS chip. However, when I run PPSTEST on
/dev/pps0, I get the following:

trying PPS source "/dev/pps0"
found PPS source "/dev/pps0"
ok, found 1 source(s), now start fetching data...
time_pps_fetch() error -1 (Connection timed out)
time_pps_fetch() error -1 (Connection timed out)
time_pps_fetch() error -1 (Connection timed out)
^C

I just measured the P9_12 pin, and I see 2.2v and a 100ms pulse width square
wave coming from the Adafruit GPS receiver. Any other thoughts as to what
might be causing the timeout?

Re: [beagleboard] BeagleBone Black GPS PPS and Chrony for time sync

2018-08-30 Thread Thomas
Perfect! That seems to have fixed my issues! Ill be sure to add a post on the
web describing the procedures we went through to help others!

I do have one other question for you. If this is out of scope, Ill ask it on
another forum, but I figured I would start here...

Now I have confirmed that I see NEMA messages on /dev/ttyS1 and I have pps data
on /dev/pps0.

I next installed gpsd via apt-get and also chrony via apt-get.

using cgps, I do have a fix, but at the bottom it flashes pps:false

32","activated":"2018-08-30T19:35:48.716Z","flags":1,"native":0,"bps":9600,"parity":"N","stopbits":1,"cycle":1.00,"mincycle":0.20}]}
{"class":"WATCH","enable":true,"json":true,"nmea":false,"raw":0,"scaled":false,"timing":false,"split24":false,"pps":false}
{

Not sure about that one, so I checked chronyc sources, and get the following:
210 Number of sources = 2
MS Name/IP address Stratum Poll Reach LastRx Last sample
===
#? NMEA  0   41723   +217ms[ +217ms] +/-  109ms
#? PPS   0   4 0 - +0ns[   +0ns] +/-0ns

Any thoughts as to why chrony and/or gpsd are not seeing the pps signal?

I never told gpsd where to look for the /dev/pps0 device, but I did tell chrony
to look at:

# get NMEA data from gpsd over shared memory
refclock SHM 0 offset 0.395 delay 0.2 refid NMEA noselect
# get PPS data from pps-gpio, summarize every 16 seconds, prefer it
refclock PPS /dev/pps0 refid PPS poll 4 prefer

Thanks!

Re: [beagleboard] BeagleBone Black GPS PPS and Chrony for time sync

2018-08-30 Thread tremmert
First off, Thanks Robert for all your help. Looks like we are up and
running!

Next, I wanted to post a few notes in case others run into the issues that
I had.

1) From a clean install, apt-get update then apt-get upgrade
2) git clone https://github.com/beagleboard/bb.org-overlays.git
3) cd bb.org-overlays/src/arm
4) Create your *.dbs file in this directory (above in thread)
5) back up two levels to /bb.org-overlays/ and issue ./install.sh
6) edit /boot/uEnv.txt and add:
uboot_overlay_addr0=/lib/firmware/DD-GPS-00A0.dtbo
7) reboot
8) Here is some short python code to check your NMEA stream:

import serial
import Adafruit_BBIO.UART as UART
GPS = serial.Serial('/dev/ttyS1', 9600)
while(1):
while GPS.inWaiting()==0:
pass
NMEA=GPS.readline()
print NMEA

If all is well, you will see a stream of NMEA data coming across.
9) Run pps-test /dev/pps0 to confirm you have a good pps signal
10) install gpsd from apt-get
11) gpsd -D 5 -n -N /dev/ttyS1 /dev/pps0
12) then run cgps. You should see a valid fix and also in the raw data at
the bottom, several lines about pps.
13) install chrony from apt-get
14) edit config:

# change the clock slower for less jitter
minsamples 10
# get NMEA data from gpsd over shared memory
refclock SHM 0 offset 0.395 delay 0.2 refid NMEA noselect
# get PPS data from pps-gpio, summarize every 16 seconds, prefer it
#refclock PPS /dev/pps0 refid PPS poll 4 prefer
refclock PPS /dev/pps0 lock NMEA
keyfile /etc/chrony/chrony.keys
commandkey 1
driftfile /var/lib/chrony/chrony.drift
log tracking measurements statistics
logdir /var/log/chrony
maxupdateskew 100.0
dumponexit
dumpdir /var/lib/chrony
# if local stratum is configured and there's a local clock issue, the PPS
changes stratum to match this stratum
#local stratum 10
allow
logchange 0.5
rtconutc
# change this to the proper country code
#pool us.pool.ntp.org iburst offline

Make sure you start gpsd before chronyd.

Then run chronyc sources and you should be good to go!

Thanks again for all the help!

[beagleboard] Bluetooth connection problem

2018-08-30 Thread F Stanford
Out of the box I am having great difficulty connecting my beaglebone blue
to any other device via bluetooth using the command line bluetoothctl
module.

In brief, from the command line I can go into the bluetoothctl utility.
>From there I have been able to successfully pair to my phone. I can then
momentarily connect to my phone with this command:
[bluetooth]# connect AC:37:43:80:C5:DD

after I verify the confirmation code from both phone and beaglebone it
initially connects giving me this line:
[CHG] Device AC:37:43:80:C5:DD Connected: yes

Then 10 seconds later it notifies me that I have been disconnected with
this line:
[CHG] Device AC:37:43:80:C5:DD Connected: no

Typing:
[bluetooth]# info AC:37:43:80:C5:DD

I've tried to connect to a couple of different devices with the same
results.

Linux beaglebone 4.4.59-ti-r96 #1 SMP Tue Apr 4 17:39:20 UTC 2017 armv7l
GNU/Linux
Bluetoothctl version 5.23

I ended trying the latest June 2018 beaglebone image along with the latest
Bluetoothctl version. But that didn't work either. I was getting 'no
controller available' messages when I issued any command within
bluetoothctl.

I welcome any and all suggestions for getting through this...

Thanks.

Re: [beagleboard] Re: battery power for PocketBeagle?

2018-08-30 Thread Fred Kerr
It runs well with the soldered implementation. My breadboards are a little
cheap.

The attached minicom_20180830b.cap shows a boot with microUSB power from a
wall wart (from my rpi3), then a boot with the battery circuit. I left both
RX and TX attached; I'll play with disconnecting them another time.

I'll look into getting some "telemetry" info from the pocket beagle. I'm
open to suggestions about things to add/log, etc. Also, I think this pocket
beagle doesn't have a fix that I got before - after the shutdown, things
panic.

If anything else jumps out from the log file, please let me know!

 Hello all,

 I'm being just a little bit careful here:

 I'm about to try this, but I will connect up the serial terminal first,

 I will test the serial connection first with just a micro USB charging
 cable rather than USB to a computer. (Simplify!)

 It's my understanding that LiPo charging is disabled or not present in
 the firmware. (I'll give you the "uname -a" and other info the next time I
 fire it up. Just let me know what and how to check.)

 Also, it's not clear (without reading the data sheet :) ) about the
 resistor values for the thermistor and the parallel (linearizing?)
 resistor.

 If you have a 10K thermistor, do you put it in parallel with a 10K
 resistor, or likewise 100K thermistor in parallel with a 100K resistor? Do
 you put the thermistor anywhere in contact with the (e.g., 18650) LiPo?

 From the prior thread, it seems to be sufficient (if even necessary)
 just to connect a 10K resistor from TS (P2-16) to ground (P2-15).

 10uF cap from battery (P2-14) to ground (P2-15).

 (Tangent/future: What about larger cap, perhaps using a 5.5V supercap,
 detect supercap discharging (lipo voltage to ~min input voltage on vbat)
 and give an interrupt to shut the board down?)

 Thanks in advance for your help, and to the original thread authors!

Thanks - I've started trying fritzing. I haven't seen where the pocket

I also have gEDA/gschem on my list.

Thanks!

Re: [beagleboard] Run Qt on Boot up

2018-08-30 Thread sam . abbas3
Hi Robert,

I am able to get it working on beagleboard using slim and openbox, but its
not working on my beagle clone. As in my beagle clone I don't have the HDMI
display connected at the startup, and slim does not launch. How can I get
slim to launch even if nothing is connected at HDMI, the way lightdm does?

Thank you
