True...when they've matured, but I've always found that the very last place
my pups were trustworthy in their house training was on a dog bed (the people
beds are the only place in the house 'off limits' to the dogs).

I have no idea why...it's just always been where they have their last
accident. Of course, knowing that...I aways put the bed(s) away until I
think the pup's house trained. No help, they hit it whenever it comes out

General consensus for Berner rust is burnt sienna (it seems so bright to
me) other colors mentioned for the rust and shading are: raw sienna, dark
umber, bright copper, raw umber, naples orange. I'm definitely off to
the art store tomorrow to look at some of these colors. I have burnt
sienna and raw sienna and have mixed colors as well. I'm strictly a
beginner at this but it is addicting and the numerous, annoying rocks on
my property have taken a whole new meaning! I am scanning photos of my
dogs, turning them into line drawings and transferring them onto rocks
with graphite paper..then I go by the color photo to paint. Each one
gets a little better, so I am learning.

peeing on the bed

2002-11-02 Thread Brnrmom
Try just keeping her away from the bed (close the bedroom door or babygate
the entrance) for a couple months if that is the only place in the house your
youngster urinates. Of course greatly rewarrd her when she goes in the
right place (outside) w/ enthusiastic praise and perhaps a tidbit. This
will enable her to get out of the habit. She might just think it is the place
to go, a nice soft toilet!

Another Berner in a local shelter!

2002-11-02 Thread Carl Seibert
All,

I get up this A.M., walk Nanook, open the local
Williamsburg Gazette and glance at the SPCA ad (as
I always do) and look closer - as it appears that
the dog there looks like a BMD. Well, the ad said
nuetered Pure-Bred Mountain Dog

Anyway, I'm leaving the house right now to check on him.

Will let you all know the details, when I get back.

It would be of benefit to know where you are located so you could be
pointed in the right direction. There are good breeders throughout the US

Re: dogs for sale in Atlanta paper

2002-11-02 Thread Mary Shaver
The owner of the dogs for sale is Howard Moore, who may or may not be
some relation to David Moore.

We have not identified who bred the 2 females he has up for sale.

The two new females he purchased, he could not remember the name of the
breeder, but he obtained them from Aiken, SC, and the only berner
seller I know of in that location is Jackie McCarthy, unless someone new
has moved in.

The breeder of the Canadian male this guy owns is anybody's guess. This
guy couldn't be bothered to look up the pedigree info on the two girls
for sale, much less tell me anything about the male.

Unless someone wants to go to this guys house and get a look at the
pedigree information on the berners he has, I don't think phone calls
will get us any more info than what we have now. My guess is, just like
responsible breeders deal with other responsible breeders, guys like
this have their own little network of BYB and exploiters that they buy
from and sell to, and they are out of the loop from the folks we know.
That's not to say that breeders don't need to be constantly on the
vigil, especially in their dealings with PPO's they don't know.

The only good news out there, and I am being extremely cautious in my
optimism, is that the other crews of BYB in South Carolina are evidently
having some difficulty selling their puppies. One still has 2 out of
original litter of 4, they are six months old and price has come down
from $1500 to $900. One still has 3 out of litter of 5, they are now 4
1/2 months old. Don't know about any price changes on them. I am trying
to follow them wherever they advertise and throw in counter ads.

Introducing new puppy Timber!

2002-11-02 Thread RM Johnson
I brought our new baby Timber home this week! He flew from Ottawa to
Vancouver where I picked him up and then we slowly drove down to visit
friends in Everett, Washington for the day. These friends are retired
and do not have pets but they do have two Grand-Berners (owned by their
daughter) and they loved having Timber spend the day and of course they
fell in love with him instantly! Timber flew home to Alaska in a Sherpa
Bag on the seat beside me and he didn't make so much as a peep for the
entire 3 hour flight. (If you haven't tried a sherpa bag for traveling
with a puppy, I highly recommend it!) I opened the zipper at the top of
the bag and Timber rested his head on my arm the whole way. :-)

Timber has an out going and super friendly personality! I know I'm
bragging here but he has an absolutely incredible temperament! He went
through the Seattle Airport like he's done it every day of his life.
When people (of all shapes sizes and some in Halloween costumes) came
up to him, he always offered them kisses tail wags. He was unfazed by
rental car returns, luggage carts, elevators, large sliding glass doors,
escalators, long check-in lines, and security - where he was surrounded
and adored by at least 10 security personnel.

Since coming home, he has been a true working dog - helping me to rake
our big backyard yesterday. He played in the leaves and chased the rake
for me!

I would like to thank his breeder, Rose Tierney, for allowing me the
privilege of having one of her beautiful and precious babies. I am the
proudest new mom ever!

Re: Berner behavior question

2002-11-02 Thread jean cheesman
Both the original posts on this topic referred to approx. six months old
Berner bitches jumping up and peeing on the bed.

Hmmm! Haven't met this behaviour myself but occurs to me to ask if these
young ladies have been spayed? Here UK, six months is when we normally do
it! Association here was in Anne's post where she thought maybe breeder had
used sheets in the whelping box and maybe trip down memory lane. At six
months, still pups but beginning to get conflicting, I'm a grown up girl now
feelings!!.

Just a thought!

Re: Spaying...Opinions, Please, Regarding Timing

[EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Early is better, or wait till she matures a bit more???

Early is better, IMNSHO.g

You've already learned about the difference in risk of mammary cancer for
bitches spayed before their first heat, it's on the order of a 98% reduction.

Growth wise, there's absolutely nothing to substantiate a visable difference
in the finished dog based on age at spaying. I have a sizable, lovely, 7
y.o. bitch here who was spayed at 6 months...it's in the genes, not the womb
g.

Bitches who are spayed pre-pubescent can have a vulva that doesn't get as
full as a bitch spayed after her season. In rare instances, bitches spayed
prior to the first heat can experience continence problems but it is quite
rare. I only mention it in that if your puppy has a hard time containing
herself now, that might be a reason to hold off.

Personality wise...some people feel that after whelping a litter, a bitch is
shomehow more 'mature'...less 'coltish'. Personally, I'm quite happy for my
girls to retain their 'fresh-faced' perkiness. g

The major factors for me are that the younger a bitch is when spayed, the
faster and easier the proceedure, the faster they heal, and the sooner they
bounce back. This is well documented...in fact, puppies who are early s/n
(usually around 8-9 weeks) are in and out of surgery in as little as 15
minutes and bounding around in an hour.

I've always spayed my girls at 6 months and been very happy with the results.
