Not a Brag -- A Clarification
Hi L'ers, Buddy's breeder, Dede Laveran, posted the results of the Pennsauken, New Jersey shows. She wrote the winning Berners' formal names. As a clarification (be quiet Pat Long!), I would like to clarify that it was my Buddy (Ch Greenway's Genuine Draft) who took Best of Breed all three days and a Group 2 on the last day. Pat, how about I bring you my special Chocolate-Almond cheesecake for the clarification?? grinning! Maria and Daisy Dear L'ers, Buddy is muscled because I chase him all day every day -- and he still comes back. Sigh. I taught him everything he knows. Trust me. Daisy
Re: Not a Brag -- A Clarification
Maria, Guffaw. And of course it wasn't a brag, of course it was just a clarification. Oh, this isn't an email, it's a note. Just wanted to clarify that! However! Daisy, you did brag about teaching Buddy everything he knows! So if you want to send some of his kibble to the SPCA as a brag donation, I'm sure everyone but Mom and Buddy would be very happy! VetWrap
Hi, Would like to point out to those who have never used VetWrap before that while it is an excellent bandage that sticks to itself it has to be used with care. It should not be over stretched before application because it can then act as a tourniquet. When used for wound coverage it is best applied over a soft bandage to keep that in place. Rose Tierney
Fw: FOUND PUPPY
Hi All, Ran down to Belle Mead Animal Hospital to check on the puppy and sorry to say he is not a pure Berner, at best it is about 75%. Has very similar markings with a large white patch on the back and a Boxer facial expression. Has a nice temperament and the look on his face that said: Please take me home was very hearth- breaking. If you know of anyone that might have a home for him, please let them go down and adopt him. He is at 872 Rt206, Belle Mead, NJ (908-874-4447) Have two photos which I can e-mail to anyone thinking about adopting him. Shake-A-Paw Pet Store
Denise, I'm a little behind reading the Berner-l. This morning, (Tuesday) I read your post in Digest 4233 regarding the Berner pup being sold in a pet store on Long Island. Unfortunately, this store has been very successful selling dogs which are purchased impulsively by well meaning people who underestimate the responsibilities that come with dog ownership. Little do these people know, they are paying twice as much for a dog whose health is less reliable than if the dog was purchased from a private breeder. The owners of this store run a classified ad every day in the local newspaper claiming to have puppies of all breeds available. I work near this store and often during my lunch break, walk over to visit the puppies in the store. On more than one occasion I have personally witnessed puppies being delivered to the store in poorly ventilated trucks, with cages stacked floor to ceiling. The store is set up with two areas. The front of the store is fairly typical, there you can buy reptiles, ferrets, rabbits, etc. and pet supplies. The puppy area is separated by a set of glass doors, once you walk through those doors, there is no mistaking you are in a kennel. There, crowded into cages are puppies of all breeds. They do have people working during business hours continuously cleaning the trays under the cages. All the dogs are lying on hard cage grate floors. In December of 2001, I saw a male Berner sharing a cage with a Mastif. I was a bit shocked because I had never seen a Berner for sale in a pet shop. I inquired with the manager about the dog and was told he was a Russian import. I didn't notice on my first visit, but later on I noticed the dog had very large Hygromas on both elbows. For the benefit of those of you who may not know, hygromas are the body's reaction to repeated trauma to an area in which bone lines close to the surface of the skin. The trauma in this case was the hard floor in his cage against the elbows. The asking price for this dog was $2400., but if I was interested the owner may be willing to let him go for $1900. What a bargain! I thanked the manager and left. I couldn't stop thinking about that dog all day. In all of the chaos of that kennel, I was impressed at how noble and proud that dog remained. Back in the office I searched the web for Berner info, found a breeder in New York and sent her an email relating what I had seen. To my surprise, she phoned me that evening and we discussed the dogs predicament. We ended that conversation with the situation unresolved. However she did explain that if I were to buy this puppy, because I felt sorry for him, in essence all I would be doing is condemning other dogs and puppies to the same fate by increasing the demand for them. A couple of days later I received a surprise call from the breeder, she had been in contact with BARC, and with counsling, coaching and guidence from both I purchased the dog with a promise I'd be reimbersed, and I then transported him to the breeders' home. (seven hour ride in the snow) Ultimately, I wound up paying $1300. to the owners of Shake-A-Paw. Thankfully, this dog continues to be healthy and lives a life of luxury in the snow covered mountains on upstate New York. I have since assisted a friend purchase a German Shepard from this store. We were sucessful in negotiating the price of that dog down to $100. by threatening a call to ASPCA. Unfornuately, the breeders words of wisdom came true, other Berners are condemned to the same fate, as Shake-A-Paw continues to import dogs through brokers and the unsuspecting public continues to buy. As Sherri Venditti stated in her post; Unfortunately, the retail sale of dogs is perfectly legal in this country so short of enforcing state and local regulations, there's not a lot to be done specifially for this pup. That said, there ARE some things we as individuals working together CAN do. There's an ad hoc group of us who will monitor, buy, foster, and place a pet store pup IF we can do so at a price that doesn't put profit in the seller's pocket. If you or your daughter would like to help in this process, let me know and I'll send you/her some add'l information privately. ~ Sherri Venditti P.S.- For the sake of pet store puppies everywhere, CONTRIBUTE to the BMDCA Lobby Fund and/or the Light One Candle Fund. Re: lymphosarcoma
Dear Wendy, Know we are keeping you and Miss Kitty in our thoughts and prayers. I need to know about your experiences with lymphosarcoma. Jean, I read your Sammy's story and thank you. It is the most heartbreaking time to find your loved one suddenly diagnosed with this awful disease! I was in total shock but somewhere went into Automatic Mode and proceeded to gather as much information and help as I could. First, step back a pace and take heart! Lymphoma is one of the better cancers (hmm, how sadly I write that!) and can be treated. Sam had the worst possible kind, T-Cell 3. He was given a few short weeks to live, even with treatment. He went on to live another glorious six months where you wouldn't have known he was sick. Chemo on the COP system gave instant relief, within a few days of the first treatment the lymph nodes shrank and he had been struggling to breathe, his cancer hit so fast. Then we had problems with lack of appetite and vomiting. Thanks to the research and help from friends here on the Berner-L, this was quickly resolved. Had him on the cancer diet from the start, high protein/high fat/low carb! Sam wolfed down raw steaks, salmon, tuna and those sardines! Days he had the chemo treatments all he wanted was sardines, rich in Omega 3, will never forget the day I posted the List and he had eaten twelve tins and they stayed down! It seems at this point we have 3 options: 1. Paliative care (ie steriods and pain management) 2. Chemotherapy 3. Atlernative care of which I know little, but some sort of augmentation of her cells that are reintroduced to fight the cancer cells. I went for overkill and did all three! And Sam had those glorious extra months of real quality time. Praying for you that Miss Kitty has a lesser form of lymphosarcoma, she could have a lot more happy time to come. I moderate EndlessLove Group on Yahoo for owners with pets with cancer and Pyr. Clondike lived to thirteen plus and died of old age! Vet education on OFA films
I have a large young male Berner with an elbow problem and yesterday I took him in for a recheck and ideas on medical management for the problem. His movement is a bit odd aside from his limp, so we decided it would be good to re-Xray the elbow and get a shoulder film as well just to make sure we weren't missing anything. Instead of waiting to do OFA films, she said while he was sedated it might be good to Xray his pelvis and if the hips didn't look good I wouldn't even have to do OFA films when he turns 2. From what she said, this was standard in this practice and they even advised clients not to send films in if it didn't look like they would pass. I respect this Vet and was quite surprised at her response. I told her I would do films and submit to OFA anyway, because I thought it was important for people to know the full story on what orthopedic problems were being produced. I told her the responsible Berner breeders I knew wanted information on all their puppies. She seemed genuinely surprised and said she just never thought of it that way. When I returned later in the day to pick up my boy, she thanked me for presenting a different view and said she had shared what I told her with the rest of the staff. She also said she plans to actively begin educating her clientele on the value of getting Xrays and submitting to OFA. Moral of the story: sometimes helping change one person's view can have an effect! Vicky Hall in Utah

available Berner Newf mix
I am aware of a one year old male Berner Newf mix where a new home is needed quickly. I know very little at this point but plan to make contact and get more facts ASAP. I am told that he is Newf sized and Berner colored. I am also told he is very full of himself. He lives with a female Golden who is about to whelp any second and the current owner wants him to have a new home soon as he is just too rambunctious and she is unable to handle him. He is located near me in the VT/NH border area. Anyone interested please contact me via email at [EMAIL PROTECTED] From the land of a very frigid wind chill approaching minus 40.
