"There are many ways to say, 'I love you!'" is a song that I remember from
the Mister Rogers' Show, which by the way originates in Pittsburgh, PA!!
Well, that song seems appropriate for the ways that people have found to
make donations to the various Berner causes that need our help. Jim
Johnson recently offered to generously donate a large part of his
commissions from the sale of real estate to Berner causes and there are
others who also donate part of their commissions to Berner causes. Here is
a current list of what people are doing to help. Maybe we can add some
other people to the list of things in new and creative ways to help
Berners.

WAYS THAT PEOPLE HAVE FOUND TO HELP BERNERS:

---> Jim Johnson has his real estate license in Colorado. If someone from
the "L", a local club, etc. refers him to a client in Colorado or any other
city and he closes a deal, he will donate 25% of the commision back to the
BMD cause of their choice and will donate an additional 25% to a BMD cause
of his choice, so a total of 50% of his total commission will go to BMD
charities. Contact Jim at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

---> Patt Wiegand is offering her collar covers to benefit BARC. Please
visit the Canterbury Tails web site at: www.canterbury-tails.com

---> Pippa loves Berners, and she loves making things of all kinds. With
this in mind, Pippa will donate 2.5% of her proceeds from the sale of her
hand-crafted items. Another 2.5% will go to BEHAF. Contact Pippa at:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

---> Ray Burgett will donate his total commission from any "new customer"
orders from his Flint River Ranch Premium Pet Food order page to BARC. Ray
estimates that will work out to 15 3/4 % of the total sale

2003-01-22 Thread Eileen Morgan
A few folks have asked me about Aleve, not being sure it if is ok for dogs,
as it is close in nature/family to ibuprophan, which is not ok for dogs.

I think I mis-typed--Ascripton, the Maalox + NSAID, was what I actually have
in my kit.
Sorry!

Puppy at retail store ,& my Berner update

2003-01-22 Thread Annette Tucker
First let me apologize if this email is redundant. I don't quite know what
to do with the information given to me, so I thought of the Berner- L list.
I must admit I have not been able to follow along in quite some time.

My hope is that I may be of some help if I post this information.

My sister's friend saw a Bernese Mtn. Dog puppy for sale at a retail store
in Scottsdale, AZ.

The dog was seen this past weekend at
Puppies 'N Love at the Scottsdale Fashion Square in Scottsdale, AZ.

This is all the information I have which was passed on to my sister from a
close friend of hers (they know I have a Berner and was shocked to see one
in a pet store).

I am in NC and don't think that I can do much from here. However, if there
is an organization or someone specific I should contact who might want to
look into this, please let me know!

By the way, for those of you who remember my Berner "Boone" (now 5 years
old) that I emailed about last summer (lumbar/sacral surgery, neck
compression surgery and seizures about every 2 months)- here's a quick
update. He is relatively stablized but seems to have a tough time in cold
weather. He seems to be in pain (seen in his rear end/back legs) when it is
cold and damp, but then he seems pain free when it warms up. Every once in a
while he has a really bad relapse and has a tough time for several days in a
row. I don't know if this is weather related or if he hurts himself
somehow, but just when I think he must be having additional problems, he
gets better.

Since he is both bowel and urine incontinent he stays outside, although we
make the garage available to him when it is cold and/or wet. I am grateful
that he is still alive and in good spirits, but it is hard to see him on
those painful days and when he wants just to be inside with us. Even when
he is feeling good, he doesn't walk near as much as he used to and he slows
down like an old dog at the end of a less than 1/2 mile walk. I have been
working with my vet on getting him an anti-inflammatory that won't hurt his
liver. We are trying a new one that isn't supposed to have side effects.
It is hard to know how to entertain him because we can't always walk him (he
doesn't want to when he is stiff) and he has trouble running even after a
toy that has been thrown (although he has lots of energy still). I feel bad
because some days he just sits outside looking so bored!
I guess all of you who have dogs with health issues understand the emotional
roller coaster ride. But I am grateful that he is still here (and he is
still happy), as one vet told us over 1 1/2 years ago that he had
degenerative myelopathy. This update probably sounds so negative, but only
because this has been a tough week. Over Christmas we were in Michigan with
him and it snowed and he had a ball and did great! Thanks again for all
those who gave me advice and encouragement last summer!

this can only apply to new customers of FRR, so if you are thinking about

sales of merchandise from dogstuff.com

donated to the BMDCA Health Fund if you enter Amazon.com through Wendy
Beard's Boris Books at:
http://members.rogers.com/bernerboris/bernerbooks.html
Wendy Beard's Berner, Boris, has dedicated his free time to reading these
books and has great pleasure in recommending books to you. In order to make
your choice a little easier he has included comments from some of the
berner-l members. Even he, as a humble dog, knows that your pockets aren't
bottomless. However, should you decide that you must have some of these
books for your own personal library then follow the links provided on the
website and you will help Bernese Mountain Dogs far and wide, as any
commission earned on the sale of these books through this web site will go

BERNER FUNDS:

Someone mentioned that we need to have a list of all of the current Berner
Funds accessible, and I agree that it is absolutely necessary! We have so
many different funds in need of money, and all of us have a favorite
emphasis. Here's the current list. The funds are listed alphabetically.
Below the Berner funds are some detailed descriptions of other ways people
have found to help! Contact them for details.

Hi Barb,

When we were at the Potomac Valley Draft Test this fall, I bought a really
nice blue jacket with an embroidered Berner on it. They also had them in
green and Laurie Montoya bought one of those. It has a nice warm hood,
too, which is nice in this single digit weather we're having in Pittsburgh
right now. I'm NOT a hat person, so a hood is as good as it gets for me!!!
I hope to see you at Potomac Valley. I'll try to leave some things for

Re: lump question

2003-01-22 Thread Linda Wallace
In regards to my posting this morning about the lump I found on Mocha:

I just got back from the vet. He found a oozy, crusty wound that was less
than an inch away from the lump I had felt. So he thinks that the lump I
found is just an irritated lymph node, that will get better when the wound
heals. We walk in the woods a lot so I'm sure she was probably poked with
a stick or something.

I missed the wound because I didn't make Mocha lie down this morning so I
could do a more thorough search when I found the other lump - she has hip
dysplasia and I always seem to make her scream when I try to manipulate her
legs to make her lie down. Since I had looked at this lump and saw that it
clearly wasn't a wound I panicked and called the vet. But I'm glad I did,
because even if I had seen the scrape this morning I would have wondered
why this other lump was there.

So hopefully that's it. If the vet's explanation doesn't make sense to
anyone please let me know! But since I get swollen glands in my throat
from other infections I thought it made sense. He also said it was too
small to aspirate (only 2-3 mm across and he didn't think it was very deep)

Anyway, thanks for those who e-mailed me and please let me know if the
lymph node explanation doesn't seem reasonable!

Thanks!

27 Dogs in one car???

2003-01-22 Thread Lucy & Yogi
My SO loves to find unusual animal stories in the online news and share
with me. This one I had to pass on...

Woman drove car with 27 dogs

An animal lover had 27 dogs in her car including one on her lap when she
was stopped by police on a dual carriageway, a court heard.

Barbara Byrne, 60, was also smoking and holding a can of drink between her
thighs, Huntingdon magistrates were told.

Two police officers tried to pull over the former care worker in her
Renault Laguna estate after they saw her driving at 40 mph and veering
across the A1 dual carriageway in heavy rain at Brampton, Cambridgeshire.

She carried on driving for more than 15 miles after officers sounded sirens
and flashed the patrol car's lights.

A second police car had to be used to box in her car and force her to stop
on 13 May last year.

Five dogs were travelling unrestrained. Another 22 small ones were in a
cage in the back of the car.

Byrne later told the police that she had been driving more than 100 miles
from her home to take her pets for a walk on the beach at Skegness.

Byrne of Manor Close, Tongham, Surrey, was found guilty of careless
driving, failing to stop and driving otherwise than in accordance with a
licence.

She was banned from driving for a year, fined £50 and ordered to pay £75
costs.

One option is to do a needle aspirate. The vet will use a needle and syringe
to try to draw up a few cells from the lump. If successful, he can either
send the slide off to a pathology lab for evaluation or he can take a look at
it himself for any unusual cells.

My vet usually does the basic cytology herself and lets me know whether
there's anything suspicious or not. If there is, I either remove the lump
and biopsy it or do a punch biopsydepending on her findings and the
location. Usually she comes up with sebacious cyst type stuff or lipoma
(fatty benign tumor).

Some types of tumor can be proliferated by anything that disturbs their
integrity, such as infiltration with a needle of punch...that's a risk I take
rather than repeatedly knocking my dog out for full excision or ignoring the
lump all together (the other two options).

lump question

2003-01-22 Thread Linda Wallace

I was petting Mocha (spayed, 2 yrs old) this morning and felt a lump on her
torso. Actually it was just behind her front left leg, but underneath her -
I guess that would still be considered her stomach area? It was right
where the black and white fur meets. It's about an inch away from a
nipple. Anyway, I've made an appointment for the vet today, but
unfortunately the only one who was available seems to be very laid back
about a lot of things, so I don't know if I'm going to trust his opinion.

My question is, are there any things I can do to try to determine if it's a
harmless lump or something more serious? It felt kind of hard, it's not
discolored and there's nothing in the surface of the skin to indicate that
there should be a lump there. She's been acting and eating normally.

Thanks in advance for any advice!!

re: vet education on OFA films

2003-01-22 Thread Deb Tripp
Vicky:

I think that's wonderful that you were able to give another perspective
to your vet. I'd also like to add, that I've spoken with several of my
own puppy buyers who tell me that their vets have said the hips don't
look good. I always advise them to have the radiographs sent to a board
certified radiologist for a reading, (this can be the OFA, or any other
institution such as WCVM or OVC). Sometimes the vets are wrong -
especially when it comes to subtle things like sublaxation or shadowing
of films - they simply do not have the experience behind them to read
these things that can make a huge difference in whether a dog passes or
fails. Often, these dogs that the vet has said are dysplastic come back
with a "good" rating :-) Radiologists see literally hundreds films of
the same breed.

It's the same reason we go to an opthamologist to check out our dog's
eyes, or a cardiologist for the hearts...they are trained to hear/see
subtle things.

Pet Insurance in Sweden and Code of Ethics

2003-01-22 Thread Cecilia Ståhl
Here I go again about the Breeders' Code of Ethics over here : ) . this
time in regards to pet insurance in Sweden.

A majority of dog owners as well as many cat owners have pet insurance here
in Sweden. One interesting conditional clause in my Griffin's policy is in
regards to hip and elbow dysplasia. This clause is common to all pet
insurance policies available over here.

If a dog owner has a breed of dog where there is a national breeders'
genetic/health program in place, and where the conditions of the Breeders'
Code of Ethics have been met in accordance with the Swedish Kennelklubb
(SKK), then insurance coverage for medical costs is far more extensive if
the dog develops HD or ED. If one has purchased a pup from a breeder who has
not complied with the COE and has not done the proper clearances in regards
to the parent animals, then the policy only covers the costs of diagnostic
procedures.

Cecilia Ståhl & Griffin in Stockholm

ps: Griffin is doing fine now his rhinoscopy Jan 10th went fine and no
tumour in the nasal cavity was found ; )
