Re: St. Pauli
My application to adopt St. Pauli was 4th in line. Angels for Animals called me last Thursday and said St. Pauli was ready to go to her new home and that they were making contact with the prospects to verify their continued interest. I was told that if I didn't hear within the next couple days it would mean one of the first three applicants had chosen her. I've heard nothing since so I'm thinking I wasn't high enough on the waiting list. Anne Minnesota
RE: Westminster Dog Show
Hi Alex, I'm sure you'll have a lovely time looking at the dogs at Westminster and you will see some lovely Bernese BUT...This is a very important show for the exibitors and not necessarily the best time to approach a breeder with a long list of questions. They are preoccupied with their dogs and totally focussed on the show:-) Buy a catalogue and in the back will be the names and addresses of the exibitors, if you tell this list the general area you live in someone will be able to point you in the right direction for your local Berner club and breeder referral and you can make contact with a breeder at a more relaxed time:-) If you do want to make actual contact at a show keep it brief and ask for a card and/or present yours and let them know you appreciate they are busy right now but when would be a good time to talk more. Many people find breeders off-hand at shows without taking into consideration that person's pre-occupation with the demands of the day:-) Rose Tierney

Westminster
Hi All, I'm so excited to be attending Westminster this year. I've been wanting to go for years but something has always come up. We are going for the day on Monday, but will be home at night on my own couch to watch the groups! Here's the info on the Berners: Ring 4 9am Bench Row 15 Section A Hope to see some familiar faces, Beth Schmoyer Snowden Misha Bethlehem, PA
Westminster and Other Benched Shows
There are two other benched shows that I am aware of: February 21/22 - International Kennel Club of Chicago http://www.onofrio.com/shwpubs.html Go to upcoming shows Find International Kennel Club and click on the link March 15/16 - Detroit Kennel Club http://www.infodog.com/clubs/2003101701.HTM or http://www.detroitkennelclub.com/ This year's Detroit show on March 15th is a supported entry of the BMDs!! So hopefully this will bring in lot's of berners. Hope this helps others looking for dogshows to talk with breeders. Cindy Stauch Ann Arbor, MI
Stevie's Progress
Dear List Just a note to let you know that Stevie is doing ok. He has not made too much progress in the last few days. He is still unstable on his feet and his head remains kind of cocked to one side. This is of course exacerbated by his blown ear drum, and they feel that the inner ear is also infected now. He has drops instilled in his ears 4 times a day and he absolutely HATES it! If I get through this without him loathing me over his meds, it will be a miracle. We endured a very harsh winter storm yesterday, freezing rain for 12 hours, followed by 35 cm of snow right on top. We lost our power many times, but the sheer fury of the storm made it very difficult to get Stevie out. I fell into deep snow and ice twice and was so frustrated with the whole thing. But things are better today, although our power has been off several times so far today. We are bracing for another Freezing rain storm during the day tomorrow. Stevie will still only eat 6 or 8 pieces of kibble if you feed them to him by hand, one at a time. He cleans just about everything else up though, all in good time. I now am able to sleep on the couch, and make Stevie's bed up right beside me, so that I keep one hand on him most of the time when I am resting. I want to know the second that he stirs. My fingers are ok, except for the fact that one of the times that I was out in the weather, last evening, I hadn't put my mitts on and when I fell of course I put my hands out, and right into the snow! It shot knifelike pain right through those fingers, let me tell you. I was quite a sight, and ending up sitting in this mess, boohooing, and feeling quite sorry for myself, meanwhile Stevie patiently laying there with his sling on and looking worried. It was that look of his that made me suck up my own discomfort and get him in out of the weather. Not that the bad weather disconcerted him at all! I think that he was more worried about me! I am doing physio on him at home, range of motion and stretching exercises. He is such a good boy. He is not so shaky when he is on his feet, some of his tremors could be caused by his anticonvulsant medications, so they tell me. He will only have a relatively short course on these, hopefully. Well, that is all for now. Take care and many hugs and kisses to all your Berners and pets. Love to All. Karen and Stevie. xoxo P.S. I wish to thank the person who brought forward the idea of the vet wrap on his hind legs. He is much more aware of leg and foot placement with it on. (for both people and dogs) As Rose said, when people are focused or harried or stressed...they don't always put their best foot forward. The *good news* is that there are back to back shows coming up in March that ARE a good opportunity to meet people in the breed! The Ct River Working Group shows are supported entries on March 15 16 in W. Springfield, MA. The reasons these are good for introductions are that there's a large entry, a lot of spectators, a lot of room in the building...not nearly as hectic as all-breed shows, and the host clubs will offer Public Ed information and Hospitality each day. As always, best to talk with people after the judging or before if they're not exhibiting. I'll be there, happy to chat if you can make it. ~Sherri Venditti

bloat (food related?)
I have read many things on bloat and am more confused with each reading...elevate the dishes, don't elevate the dishes...dry food vs canned food or home made food...is there a connection with glucosamine and chondroitin and bloat? I am open to any and all advice. I have a friend who has a Swissy who bloated last week( a 6 year old male)..she was in the process of changing over from Iams to Eukanuba (both for large breed) on the advice of her vet and was in the final week of making the adjustment. She is suspect of the food making him gaseous. We have a year old female berner (raised on Iams and veggie treats..loves banana too!) and a 8 week old male berner (sent home on Eukanuba) and would not like to experience what she went through...any suggestions? Thanks for your help. Brenda Moscatello
AKC meeting
I just learned the 'fwd' I sent earlier didn't come through except for My comment line at the top ... here is the full report I thought you'd like to know - Joan Robinson === Thought you might be interested in this, fellow berner-l listers ... There are a number of folks out there with both Cavaliers Berners yes, lots of Berner stuff is shared on the Cavalier lists ... Joan Robinson Original Message Subject: [CKCS-L] AKC Meeting Date: Sun, 2 Feb 2003 21:37:41 -0500 From: Carol Richards [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel List [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] With permission from Betty Stovall, who originally posted this on a Japanese Chin list that I'm on, I am forwarding this to the list. I thought the list might find this interesting due to our recent discussion about puppy mills and auctions, as well as the lobbyist the Bernese Mountain Dog group recently hired. Carol Richards Earlier this month I attended the Lawrence Kansas Kennel Club meeting that was written about on this list. I drove up with, Laverne, a Mastiff rescue lady I met attending one of those awful auctions in preparation for my Gazette Column. After opening with a distasteful joke, AKC VP Robert Slay spoke to us about his department. The first name on his projection screen was Steve Robinson, Director of Compliance Operations and Inspections. After singing this man's praises, he finally moved on to to speak briefly about the High Volume Breeders Committee, which was why most folks were there. As he spoke he took time for questions and answers and I asked two. First, I asked what it accomplished for the HVB Committee to come to my area in Missouri and visit only kennels that were hand picked by Tom Holly who had given them 1 1/2 months to prepare their kennels for the committee's visit. Holly was the MO Dept. of Agriculture's kennel inspector who received national media coverage when it was discovered his wife owned and operated a huge commercial kennel, needless to say he now inspects chickens. (-: I told Slay that my home would look like a million dollars if I knew in advance that President Bush was coming. I explained that I can see no improvement of the AKC kennels in our area from what they were 14 years ago, Laverne agreed with me. Slay then declared they have improved 300% since the care and conditions policy was accepted in1996. Hog wash How on earth would he or his department know? They are not the ones driving by these kennels as they go to work each day as I do. My second question was, isn't it a conflict of interest for your director, Mr. Steve Robinson, to breed and show Chows? Steve Robinson is a very crude, rude individual that attended the action in Wheaton, MO in May. I heard him bragging to me and others about his Chows being the best in the world as he sat cheek to cheek with Herman Shindler, a commercial breeder from Mexico, MO who has from 3,000 to 5,000 breeding dogs at all times. By their own choosing, the Shindlers no longer register their dogs with AKC due to the DNA frequent sire program and Care and Conditions Policy. Robert Slay defended Steve Robinson by saying as long as his Chows are not in his name while being shown he doesn't have a problem with it. How much more hypocritical can he get? AKC also has a policy, that if anyone is convicted of an animal cruelty charge they are automatically suspended from all AKC pivileges for a minimum of 10 years. Yet, Jr. McDaniel and Kenn Little were both convicted of cruelty charges and because of a friendship with Steve Robinson they are both still showing dogs at AKC shows. Sure makes a person wonder doesn't it? If you want to know more about these two men go to Google and check out a petition written by the editors of TNT. I learned yesterday that Steve Robinson is trying to find out who this Stovall woman is. I did not give Slay my name I only told him that I attended the auction in preparation for my September column on the dog auctions. Evidently Slay was paying more attention than he appeared to be. AKC have taken some positive steps with the Care and Conditions Policy and frequent sire DNA testing. These two policies could be a giant step forward in bringing an end to commercial kennels. According to Steve Gladstone the HVB Committee is designed to raise the bar for the commercial kennels that want to stay with AKC. But at the Breeder's Seminar put on by the Hunte Corporation this summer in Goodman, MO I heard with my own ears Steve Gladstone, the keynote speaker, tell the commercial breeders that AKC wants to embrace them. Also saying, you taught AKC a lesson when you boycotted us, AKC needs you and you need the AKC. The 1,000 plus commercial breeders were on their feet with applause. Steve Gladstone is an AKC Board member, an AKC judge and on the HVB Committee. He also made the
THE BARC LOC PRIZES ARE IN THE MAIL
Hi everyone, I wanted to let the winners of the BARC LOC Challenge Fundraiser klnow that I mailed most of the prizes on Saturday morning. I took 50 packages early Saturday morning to a small out of the way post office that isn't very busy. I go there so that I don't hold up the lines in the busy post office near my home. I still have two prizes to mail and will pack them up tonight. Some of the prizes are being sent by the donors and most of them have also been mailed. If you were one of the lucky winners, please let me know when your package arrives safely. I like to track the arrival of the prizes to make sure that everyone has received their items. Thanks!!! Just a reminderthere is another fundraiser going on right now. Terri Zimmerman is conducting a fundraiser for the lobby effort. . Talented young artist, Lace Smith will do a pencil sketch (up to 3 dogs) for the winner of this fundraiser. Tickets are $5 each or 3 tickets for $10 or 10 tickets for $20. Officially funniest thing I've ever seen a Berner do
Bison, our 9 1/2 month old BMD, has an odd habit when chasing his tail. Unlike most dogs, he catches his tail first, then holds it and circles. Pretty cute, yes. But tonight, he added a new dimension to this game. He stood between my wife's legs, caught his tail, and proceeding to circle repeatedly with tail still clamped on to. At no time did he release the tail, nor was the space under my wife's legs voided. If we could train THAT as a trick, I think he'd be beyond the Letterman scope of stupid dog tricks. He kept it up for at least a minute and at least 10 complete circles. After my wife lost her balance, he continued the chase until completely dizzy. (The dog, not my wife...) Final Chemotherapy Treatment
It has been a long and very tiring day for Moses and me, but he is finished with chemotherapy for his bone cancer; the amputation and chemotherapy have extended his happy life, hopefully significantly. When I learned to drive, in Detroit, in the very early 1970s, my instructor said that if a person could drive the highways and byways of the Motor City, he or she could drive anywhere. This gentleman has never been on Route 128, I am certain, going to or leaving Boston in heavy traffic, with a few of us poor souls, including me, driving, as usual, safely and cautiously, but the majority attempting to reach their destination as quickly as possible in whatever manner is necessary to achieve this. When I dropped off Moses at Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston, one of the Critical Care Nurses was strolling through the waiting room and told me what a pleasant and determined boy Moses is, wanting to stand right after his November 2002 rear leg amputation. Today Dr. Vandis, one of the oncologists, was in charge of his chemotherapy. She commented on what a pleasure it was to work with Moses. Again, Moses' pre-chemo. blood work was fine BUT his urine was mildly diluted. Since all else seems well, we are hoping this is just a fluke and not a sign of kidney dysfunction, possibly caused by the chemo. drug Cisplatin, given with Adriamycin during the last three chemo. treatments, even though the system is flushed extensively (diuresis) when Cisplatin is administered. Urine dilution can fluctuate during the day and my Yoda's (1992-2002) urine's specific gravity was always slightly off and we did every test in the book to ascertain his wellness and he seemed fine, in spite of this. But, instead of Cisplatin today, Carboplatin, which does not have the same adverse effects on the kidneys, was given along with the Adriamycin. Moses was sent home with Reglan (generic metoclopramide) in case of nausea and vomiting but he seems comfortable, thus far, and eagerly ate and kept down a small dinner. Dr. Vandis, in typical Angell fashion, called me in the late morning to give me a lengthy update regarding Moses, for which I was deeply appreciative. Moses is scheduled for another urinalysis next week, and bloodwork too, at my regular veterinarian's clinic; he works closely with Moses' specialists at Angell. Too, we have scheduled Moses' first post-cancer treatment follow-up appointment at Angell. In the fashion of a young person, whenever my mother used to worry terribly if I was ill, I always wondered why she reacted so deeply and personally, it seemed. Having experienced synovial cell sarcoma with Yoda and now osteosarcoma with Moses, and suffered along side with them, I now know. One heart feels another. Collie Trial
Hi All, For those of you that do not yet know, on Friday, the Toole County attorney filed papers to retry the owners of the 170+ collies that were confiscated at the Canada/Montana border. I sent the attorney a letter suggesting that they seat a jury of the owners' peers, i.e.. dog breeders, not cattle ranchers, as well as a few other suggestions regarding genetic eye disorders and how you don't need 170 malnourished breeding dogs to try to deal with it. Those of us Montanans on these lists want you all to know that we are not a bunch of redneck hicks. So many have devoted months of time caring for these poor dogs and raising money for their care. We are embarrassed by the outcome of the first trial and hope that your emails to the county attorney will help with the new trial. Keep up the good fight. Dear Auntie Joye- I just want to thank you for all the time and effort you put into the raffles to raise money for BARC, Light One Candle, and all the other Berner causes. What would we do without you?!!! My mom keeps trying to teach me things like down and stay and NO hugs, but what I really want to learn is how to write checks! Then I can bid on all the things I want, instead of her bidding on the things SHE wants. Although, I must say, a portrait of me by Lace Smith hanging in the living room would be wonderful. Dear Halley, I guess I'll have to have a word with your Mom about ticket selection the next time we have a fundraiser. ;-D Maybe we need to get some more doggie items for the upcoming Berner-Garde Fundraiser, so there will be more things that you and your fellow (and gal) Berners would enjoy(e). I'll work on that, Halley!!! Hugs, Belly Rubs and Scritches. Auntie Joye
Re: bloat (food related?)
We will relate only our experience with the feeding of our dogs. We feed Flint River Ranch Kibble with a spoon of yogurt on the AM feeding, with no water added to the kibble. We used a raised dish and have done this for many years, over 18 years to be exact but just the past 5 years with Flint River Ranch Premium Pet Foods. You will receive many replies on this, many I'm sure will have links to various studies that have been done. One must do what they feel comfortable with.
