we should vaccinate. I think they were going to follow it up with the vet

While not a Berner, our Aussie pup has had limping problems
from an early age. Diagnosed as possible pano at about 8 months
when a Lyme titer was also run and came back negative. Now
at 14 months he was having problems in the rear which looked
to my untrained eye like cruciate problems - but this time the
Lyme test came back POSITIVE!!

Not sure if it's a problem in your area but please be sure to
have the vet test for Lyme and other tickborne diseases.

from Lisa's email's subject line: Be suspicious of newspaper ads
selling dogs

Lisa makes an excellent point, but it's misstated. She should have said
just Be suspicious. It doesn't matter where anyone advertises, there
are scrupulous and unscrupulous breeders (and buyers) all over. Some
advertise in the newspaper, some in the dog magazines, some on the
internet, some are BMDCA members, some are Berner-L members. Some broker
dogs, some sell at auctions, some sell to pet shops. The unscrupulous
will use any means to help make a profit and sell a puppy, they would
never limit themselves just to newspaper ads. The challenge that many of
us have been working hard with is to help educate the caring buyer about
how to better identify the caring seller.

I think we have done a great deal in the creation and dissemination of
resources: information packets, educational materials, counter newspaper
advertisements, posters, baseball cards, the lobbying efforts, the BMDCA
education committee, the BMDCA public relations committee, you name it!
I think it's becoming more difficult for sellers to churn out litters
and sell them for high prices. I think we've been making a difference.

We still have a long way to go, but look at how far we've come already!

It would appear that we have a LOT of educating to do about puppy sources...

At least one person I know was referred to an importer/broker who advertises
in the Boston paper when they asked Angell Memorial for suggestions on
finding a BMD puppy.

I just had to write, as many of you know my now 7 month old girl came from
a volume breeder (not huge, 10-24 litters a year). We did not know this
when we bought her. Her french pedigree and registration papers came last
week (the day after she was spayed). We have had behaviour problems with
her from day one. We chose this breed for their temperament.. we
did not expect to have a hyperactive bite-monster. We love her to bits, we
work hard with her everyday to improve her behaviour, we try to avoid
trigger things, however we are not experts, if we had known in advance we
would never had wanted a dog like this. We bought a dog for life, and we
will continue to work with her (many many thanks to all the advice we have
been given, she is so much better, but still difficult). I suspect that
there will be a time when many more BMD's needing rehoming have behaviour
problems, and it will be because owners can't cope, not always because they
won't. Luckily I was a special school teacher before so have patience, but
many people do not have the type or amount of patience needed to deal with
behavioural issues. However, we have to live with the knowledge that as she
grows up she has to improve or it we be all of us having to pay the price,

re: limping and stiffness post

2003-02-11 Thread Lisa D Allen
I can only speak regarding Bernese but, if your dog is displaying limping
and stiffness, a trip to the veterinarian, in my opinion, would be in order.
This can indicate the mildest of conditions to the very most serious.
Your veterinarian can Xray and then suggest the proper medications or
treatment. Or, your veterinarian can then refer you to an orthopedic
specialist.
If this condition is easily treatable, then it will be good to devise a plan
under medical supervision.

Ads in newspapers, Moses first post-chemo tests

2003-02-11 Thread Lisa D Allen
I am completely in favor of dog clubs advertising in the newspaper to offer
the very best of services but I would never send a person to the newspaper
in search of a dog if one requested of me where best to find a specific
breed. Rather, I would warn such a person of the fact that ALOT of these
ads are very deceptive. I become sick at heart when I see a Berner
advertised for sale in the pet column of the newspaper.
Yesterday, Moses had his first post chemotherapy (bone cancer)blood tests
and urinalysis and I should have the results today. Naturally, I am anxious
to receive the results although Moses seems to be doing quite well. Angell
Memorial called, too, yesterday, to inquire as to Moses' condition. Thanks
to their finest of orthopedic and oncology departments, Moses is progressing
beautifully, although he tends to overuse his remaining back leg, in which
there is some crepitus which can be easily felt. My dogs' regular
veterinarian removed the few remaining staples from the amputation site; two
of my Bernese have lost a leg to cancer, Moses to osteosarcoma and
Yoda(1992-2002) to synovial cell sarcoma and I constantly marvel at the
surgical sites, which were left so tidy, no infection, swelling, or pain,
with the dog trying to stand up literally within hours of surgery; how very
blessed we are, in the Northeast, to have such a fine facility as Angell
Memorial Animal Hospital available.

 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
To: Bernese Mountain Dog Mailing List [EMAIL PROTECTED]

It has been a rough go lately with Hugo. The surgeon's x-rays on Saturday
showed nothing unusual. Blood and urine normal. He's not sure what caused
Hugo's setback eight days ago but was certain it wasn't due to the kind of
home-grown physical therapy I was giving him (holding out treats so he would
move a few inches, kicking and finally stretching his neck to get the
 treat).

The surgeon said Hugo definitely had feeling in his feet but at this point
wasn't using his brain motor to move the legs purposefully. He suggested
an MRI but we said we weren't putting him through any more surgery and he
 understood that.

Back home, we sat him up for his meal. As I was holding the bowl to his
face, I looked down to see he was no longer holding his front paws out the
way he has for the last week, completely stiff and rigid from the shoulder
with a big triangle of space between him and the floor. Now he was bending
his elbows in a relaxed position!

He only wanted to stay up for a few minutes but it was a start. I did some
gentle ROM exercises with one front paw and noticed it was now able to move
 all the way forward.

My question is - what can we attribute this positive change to?
Subcutaneous fluid? Or not getting his prednisone for a day because of the
vomiting (I doubt it)? Or was it something the surgeon did - holding him
into a pseudo-standing position or just all that moving around? If you have
any thoughts on this, please email me.

To the kind emailer who was concerned about what Hugo wants, please be
assured that we want what is best for him and what he wants. And if it
becomes evident that he wants to go, we will let him do that. But it is not
clear yet what his chances are of recovery. I am hoping to get him into
hydrotherapy this week, if the surgeon and the hydro-therapist ever connect.

Re: harness

2003-02-11 Thread Liz Steinweg Crew
We used a no-pull harness with 2 of our dogs and it worked great - to the
point that neither dog needed it after a couple of months! One was a 60
pound husky-x and the other a 120 pound intact male BMD. I would highly
recommend it's use for pullers.

The harness we used had a collar with 2 rings on the bottom (under the neck)
and a large ring on top. A split strap (ring with 2 straps attached) was
attached to the leash then the straps run through the upper ring under the
dog's arms and up to the lower ring. The beauty is the strap thing could
be attached for walks and then removed after the walk, leaving the collar in
place. Very simple and very effective.

See http://www.sporn.com/pages.cfm?ID=16 for the details on how the harness
works (and of course you can order one from Sporn if you wish). We got ours
from a local pet store - but they are available in different versions on the
web - I did a search for no pull harness at www.ask.com.

I
am happy to say we have had very few problems with him. At around 4-1/2
months I started noticing that he would on occasion have a little
difficulty
getting up from a lying down position (hind legs). He still has the same
difficulty but not all the time. After he is out running in the yard

on
occasion starts to limp. This will last a day or so and then the limp and
stiffness seems to go away. I am wondering if this is a sign that there
could be a problem with his hips or arthritis? My husband suggested we
give

Doggon Wheels BLESS THEM!

2003-02-11 Thread Patricia Tackett
Hi everyone,

I wrote Doggon Wheels an email late yesterday before
leaving work. I had a reply this morning waiting for
me Lori Chad owners of Doggon Wheels has told me
once they get to 75% mark towards cost of Hugo's chair
THEY are donating the final 25%. That is the greatest
news!

I know we have very caring folks on this list and some
may even think trying to see Hugo through
rehabilitation is a mute point but we have to try.
Each of us have to look into our dogs eyes trying to
decide what would we do if in similar situation. I
personally don't know I do know I'd move heaven and
earth to help my dog if I thought there was a chance
to see them recover -- that is where Donna is right
now in her situation with Hugo. Hugo is giving her
the little signs that is trying to recover and I would
hope we as Berner community can be there to help
support Donna emotionally and financially. If I lived
in California and near her I'd be offering to help
drive to hydrotherapy that's how much I feel for this
woman and what she is going through with her dog.

Thanks to all that are thinking about making
contributions toward Hugo his chair!

Hugo and His Stroke, is there a chance?

2003-02-11 Thread Rusty C Wingate
A lot has gone on with this big sweet fella and I just wanted to put my 2

I have not dealt with dogs and strokes as much to my regret I listened to
the vet when my Max was 17yrs old and had a stroke. He would get up and
fall over etc. Even tho' he was seventeen yrs old up until the stroke he
acted like a puppy, never ever sick. I know in my heart today, there was a
chance, as since that time I had the pleasure to help many a stroke patient
,human , work their way back with the proper tools! and encouragement and
patience.
The emergency with Hugo is his size and down for this length of time. He
must get mobile or the organs will fail and time is of the utmost
importance.
Doggone was so nice in setting up this account as they know the importance
of Hugie's being mobile. They have never done this before but jumped right
in as I feel they love dogs, not just in it for profit, and know the urgency
of this chair for this giant!
Donna is the one looking in his eyes and seeing a spark still there. I have
a pic taken January 30th , prior to the Robaxin, which shows his sparkle
there in his eyes. And once again Hugie is fighting to come back to Donna
and we can give him the chance. We can all pull with love in our hearts and
help this fella before it is too late.
It takes two weeks to build a chair...a chair that can help this buddy in
his fight. Then it will be there for the next furkidJust think the next
one may be yours and what that two week wait can do!!
Bless you all for your kindness and support of Hugie and Donna. I only wish
I had given my boy a chance, now I want Hugie to have his!

Pulling on the leash is one of my least favorite doggie habits (lunging is the
other.) Here's a brilliant deterrent that doesn't need any special harness.
With a 6 soft leash make a 'suitcase.' Lay the leash (still attached to the
collar ring) along the dog's spine and hold it in place just above where the
back legs meet the torso. Reach around with your other hand and bring the leash
under the body and up under the leash where you're holding it at the spine. The
leash will make a twist when it comes up under that point. Presto!!! a no-pull
harness. When the dog pulls the leash will tighten around the loin and they'll
stop pulling.

This method was developed by a very wonderful British trainer; Sylvia Bishop.
If you ever get a chance to take a lesson from her, drop everything and go!
Just be prepared with your Kevlar vest, she launches some sharp arrows at the
human team members. Don't ask how I know this :-)

Pat,

Your right we shouldn't be all running in circles. My
understanding (correct me if I'm wrong Andrea) Doggon'
Wheels had been contacted about a chair trying to get
a 'refurbished' one. I've heard from someone else
trying to find out what's happening at Doggon' Wheels
with Hugo that getting a chair to refurbish especially
for a Berner the size of Hugo is next to nil. I
believe Melissa Z. was contacting someone about making
one but not sure what status is on that ideal. I
personally have confidence in Doggon' Wheels and their
expertise on making a quality chair substantial enough
for Hugo and his needs. Donna has gone to San Diego
today for Hydrotherapy and won't be home til late and
most likely won't be on the PC until late tonight.
Hugo's account has $200 so far we need $400 and as I
understand it the chair will take up to 2 weeks to
make. I hope we don't waste another 2 weeks just
trying to help Donna out -- I know this community can
help her out with these finances how many subscribers
do we have now over 1200? I haven't checked lately.
I would hate to see more time pass, talk is cheap and
I feel Donna was left hanging last week hoping things
were coming along. We now have things in gear and
Doggon' has stepped up to the plate to help this dog
let's do our part as well. I know that once Hugo has
no need for his chair Donna will let others if they
need one have use of it.

This was not done to handicap Andrea or BEHAF in anyway, it was done to
expedite the chair for Hugie! I also thought it was 'on top of' and so
yesterday called doggone to see how the production was going only to find
there was no production and to just start the chair they needed 75% of the
total amount.
Yes, Melissa was getting plans for building one but Donna did not trust her
building abilities so yes, the fund is started at the company. At this
point if folks mail checks to one place then that place waits for them to
clear then has to mail the funds the two weeks for the chairs production
would have passed. Hugo needs this chair yesterday, it still must be built.
So instead of hashing whose baby it is and talking back and forth more and
wasting more time. Let's work together and get this chair in production .
Bet Ellen with her horse sense can tell ya what immobility does to a giant.
So yes, let's work together, time is already lost and Hugo is still down,
let's get him up and give him a chance, who cares 'who's baby' it isit
is Donna's baby Hugo that matters. I tain't no talker when time is a
wasting ..
Thanx to whoever donated this daythank you so muchwe are that much
closer to starting the chair !

i could not agree more. i am calling in my donation in a few minutes. checks
are not the way to go in this case unless we can just take some of the
donated money from stevie and earmark it for hugo and someone lay out the
money until the check is received. i would be willing to do that. sort of
like a loan.
i never wanted this to be my project. i just used all the resources i could
to help find someone to make or donate a chair. actually doggon were not the
only people who responded. everyone is so impressed by the love of this
community, they jumped right in. this is not about our egos it is about
hugo's health.

Re: Hugo and His Stroke, is there a chance?

2003-02-11 Thread Jeff Mary Chapdelaine - SnoBear berners
Hi,

Our Andi was active as could be, ran so fast up 4 steps and across the deck
that she'd come sliding into the house out of control.
She was over ten years old.
Just overnight she became like a person who had spun in circles and then
tried to walk. She wobble then crash. He head had a slight tilt.
We went to the vet, ran tests, etc.
We were told she had suffered a stroke and would not get better, probably
soon would have another and worsen.
After some time we decided she was losing her dignity unable to hold her
urine, wetting herself. We made the awful decision to let her go.
She was 10 years, eight months old.
Several months later I was talking to an ole timer vet and described Andi's
stoke and how we'd had to put her down.
He said, Honey, I hate to tell you this but strokes are not that common in
dogs. What you've described sounds like Old Dog Vestibular Syndrome and it
can be successfully treated.
I was heartbroken.
I researched the disease and thought it was important to get out the word so
that Andi's possible premature death would not be in vain.
I sent the info. to Elizabeth Pearson it was published in the Alpenhorn.
As then, I hope now this info. could help Hugo, and other Bernese who may be
incorrectly diagnosed and given a premature death sentence.
I would have spent any amount of money to save my girl, but I did not know
about this ailment in time.
I will look up the info. and post the address to the list. It may not be of
help in this case, but if it saves one Bernese it is worth sharing to me, in
rememberance of: CH. Blue Mt. Andi Dasso's Swissmiss - Our Andi girl. In our
hearts forever.

Pat, Don't you DARE apologize!! I mean, you can if

YOU SO MUCH for taking this on. It is a huge job even
it you are doing it for the interim.

It can be a little confusing because of there being
non-internet and internet versions of the database.
The updates as I understand it, go into the
non-internet database first. This is also the
database that is used to generate hard copy reports
and pedigrees (for a small fee). Eventually the
internet version of the database gets updated - but as
I understand it, this does require some effort and is
not something that is done on a daily or even weekly
basis.

Berner-Garde is an amazing source of information and
it is exciting to see more pet owners taking the
initiative to enter their dogs in this database, even
if their breeder doesn't help (I am a breeder who does
help facilitate getting health data on pups I have
bred, into this database).

Re: be suspicious of ANY ads selling dogs

2003-02-11 Thread Mary Shaver
I posed this question to Ruth Reynolds several months ago - rhetorically
- and will do the same here. How many of us buy a car the same way
today as we did 20 or even 10 years ago? Information is power. When
Consumer Reports empowered the buying public with information on how to
buy a car, dealerships were forced to undergo a sea change. We even saw
the creation of a whole new mark - the Saturn, with an entirely new
pricing scheme. All because this little magazine turned over the rock
to expose the way the auto industry REALLY worked when it came to
selling vehicles. Now, are there still people out there who pay the
sticker price? Sure. The willfully ignorant, like the poor, will always
be with us. But those numbers shrink each year.

The same can be said for the puppy buying public. Each of us who gets
involved in education and information disbursal can have the same effect
on the puppy business as Consumer Reports had on the auto business. I
absolutely believe in 10 years, possibly less, the notion of the
completely ignorant puppy buyer will be more the exception than the
rule, and the filthy underbelly of the puppy industry will be exposed
for all to see. The very fact that the bad breeders and puppy producers
have had to adopt our language (OFA's, health clearances, guarantees,
etc.) indicates the influence we have already gained with the PPO's out
there. The downside is the exploiters have become smarter and more
savvy in their presentations to PPOs making it more difficult to spot
them, the upside is, they have been forced to run tests on their dogs
that they would never have even thought of doing before. Now our
challenge is to keep ahead of them in terms of our ongoing public
education, and to be better salesmen. I think the PPO's I talk to are
always impressed when I tell them that I am a volunteer and have no
financial stake in whatever decision they make. This, at the end of the
day, makes my advice more credible simply because I DON'T have any
financial agenda. Hey, whatever works.

Whew! BIG Relief! Moses' first post-chemo tests...

2003-02-11 Thread Lisa D Allen
Yesterday, my dogs' regular veterinarian removed the few remaining staples
from Moses' amputation site, drew blood for testing, and sent out the urine
from Moses that I had brought to be tested, per request Angell Memorial
Animal Hospital. We were concerned about the specific gravity of Moses'
urine, which was low enough on February 3 that Angell changed one of his
chemotherapy drugs for his final in a series of chemotherapy treatments for
bone cancer. And, chemotherapy can effect the blood cell count, of course.
Everything, including specific gravity is normal. Blood is fine and urine
is fine and the clinic will fax the results to Angell. I know that I shall
sleep better tonight having received this good news. I am concerned about
the crepitus in Moses' remaining rear leg, even though it is to be expected
from use but Moses' appears to be moving about fine and has little
difficulty climbing on the couch and getting into the van; I just need to
help him a very little bit.

Selling dogs in the newspaper

2003-02-11 Thread Lisa D Allen
Last night's news investigative report on Channel 7 Boston really shocked
me. I consider myself rather savvy where the doings in the dog world are
concerned but was not prepared for the terrible conditions that I witnessed
which constitute the sad reality behind ALOT of these newspaper ads. That
these people are so brazen and that so little is done to regulate such came
as a bigger surprise to me than perhaps it should have.
Sure, I knew to be suspicious of newspaper ads...whom among who has been on
the Internet does not, but Channel 7 should be complimented on doing a real
eye-opening report on what is happening behind closed doors.
And, it is inconceivable to me that someone, anyone can treat another,
particularly a dependent creature in this manner; really, it boggles my
mind...Geez, I get worried/upset if one of mine even sneezes or appears not
to be enjoying a toy that I just bought for them.
I studied the pet ads in today's paper with a more educated eye; it sickened
me to read one that basically said something like Puppies, big or small, we
can get 'em all. Heaven help these poor dogs.

you kindly mentioned.

Yes !..., those stories made me remember my late Taro (Akita) who also suffered
of
this disease. He got it at his age of 12 years 6 month.
He went to the Bridge at his age of 14 years 10 month not because of this
desease but
because of heavy diarrhea.
I think, if we have good knowlege about this desease, we can teat dog many years
even

Raw Bones. I never thought I'd be giving raw bones to my dogs, but, Micawber
has crappy brown teeth and nasty, puffy gums. I hand him a raw bone, best
bet a knuckle bone, and he chews until his gums bleed. Nasty, but, after
having a bone twice a week on a regular basis, the teeth are white and the
gums receding.

Frequency of Health Problems

2003-02-11 Thread Pete Lianne Delyanis
Our family is considering a Bernese Mountain Dog as a family pet. All the
information we've come across seems to indicate that this would be a perfect
fit for our lifestyle and location. I have some questions, though, that I
haven't been able to answer yet.

Every source I've contacted (mainly the internet and a local vet) mentioned
various health problems associated with Berners. I understand from the
BMDCA health study that hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as cancers, are a
common problem within the breed which contribute to an average lifespan of
about 7 years. I'm looking for more information to put this information
into perspective and understand what it may mean to our family.

How frequently do these issues arise among Berners in comparison to other
large breeds? How likely would it be that any one Berner puppy becomes
afflicted and dies prematurely? Is this something that Berner owners expect
at the outset? What is the likelihood that a Berner would reach 10 years of
age or older?

Please let me know what you can. I would appreciate any information you can
share to help us make the right decision. Thank you.
