Paranoid??

2003-08-27 Thread Ellen Lauber
Hi, listers - I don't know if I'm being a little paranoid or not, so I
thought I'd bounce my question off of the list before I make a call to my
vet. I was petting Harper last night and felt something kind of weird. She
just had a fatty cyst removed from her hip in January, but this thing didn't
feel the same as that one did. It feels almost like a gland and it moves
around when I rub it. It's kind of on her ribs, by her belly. I felt it
the first time the other day and it doesn't feel like a lump, almost kind of
1/2" long and roundish.
Hope I am describing this correctly. Anytime I feel something strange on
her, I freak out a little. So, I'm wondering if there are any opinions out
there as to what this could be. Is it just a swollen gland that I should
wait and see if it goes down? Or, should I just take her in and get it
checked out right away?
Thanks in advance for your help!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HARPER

2003-08-06 Thread Ellen Lauber
Just a quick note saying that my favorite furkid (and only) Harper turns 5
years old today!! I can't believe I've had her for 5 years and I can't
remember life without her. She is funny, talkative, beautiful and sweet.
So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Harper and her littermates (wherever they might be!)

RE: cracked nose

2003-04-04 Thread Ellen Lauber
I have heard that the lightening of the pigment on dog's noses can be caused
by plastic food dishes. I read that the plastic bowls can get small
scratches in them and cause bacteria to grow. Whether that causes the
lightening or not, I can't be sure, but better safe then sorry..

We don't have cracked noses but we do have a
lightening of the pigment, what causes the noses to
loose their dark color.

the digging thing

2003-04-01 Thread Ellen Lauber
Hi, Listers - My girl had a bit of a digging problem when she was young. I
was never really able to get a handle on it, but I think mostly because I
used to get s kick out of watching her do it! She was so determined and
focused, those paws furiously flying, the ears flopping up and
downCracked me up:)
My friends and I took on the summer project of building a brick patio in
the backyard 2 years ago. We had to excavate a large area and therefore had
a HUGE pile of dirt in a section of the backyard. Well, that became
"Harper's Hill". She would chase the other dog off of the hill (a 140lb
Rottie), dig a hole on the side and plop down. Nose covered, paws brown
with dust, belly clumped with dirt and she was happy as can be. How do you
get mad at that?

When it became too much, I used to try filling a hole with poop. That
seemed to help for that section, but she would just move to another part of
the lawn. She eventually grew out of it. It was funny to watch though!

1 --- Do you live in
a) city/suburb - I live in a small city/town, but I have a nice yard
for Harper to run around!

2 --- Where does your dog spend the night?
During the winter, on top of my feet in bed with me! During the
summer on the bare floor closest to the A/C or on my bed, flat on her back
under the ceiling fan!

3 --- What is your dog's favorite toy?
She likes cardboard - any cardboard box she can run around with and
tear apart. When that's not available, she likes the toys that squeek or
bark at her.
4 --- Your dog's most remarkable feature is (fill in the blank)
Her happy tail! I love it when it goes in circles.
5 --- You bought a new car for your dog(s)
Yes - A Saturn VUE, so she can have plenty of room on our trips to the
Outer Banks, NC! (Spoiled?)
Now, I have to get her a new collar to match her new car.

6 --- Your dog participates in (feel free to list any titles your dog
has won)

e) therapy work - We have visited a nursing home since she was a year
old and we will be starting at a new assisted living facility soon. Harper
has earned her Canine Good Citizenship also.

g) training classes - We've gone thru some, and could probably stand to
go thru a couple more!

7 --- The naughtiest thing that your dog has done is. While our back was
turned, she grabbed a Chicken Cheesesteak sandwhich off of my friend's plate
and had it gone by the time we turned back to her! There was cheesesteak
crumbs all over.

RE: BERNER-L digest 4321

2003-03-14 Thread Ellen Lauber
Hi, everyone! I am new to the Berner Mailing List and would like to
introduce myself. My name is Ellen and my 4 year old Berner, Harper, and I
live in West Chester, Pa. I spent a long time researching dog breeds and
finally fell in LOVE with the Berner! It took me a year exactly from the
moment I made my first phone call to a breeder until the day I was able to
pick up my fluffy little girl! We are quite inseparable. She and I have
been visiting a nursing home close to our house for the past 3 1/2 years and
the folks there love her. Some of the patients have her picture up in their
rooms! They all know her name, but not many remember mine. All of my
friends children name their stuffed animals after Harper too. She is quite
the K9 celebrity here in WC!
If anyone has knowledge of any type of Berner activities in the area, I
would love to hear about them. It would be great to get together with other
Berner fanatics!
Thanks,
Ellen Lauber
