KIDS CLOTHES W/BMDs
RUGGED BEAR STORES have really terific children's clothes, infant to size 10 have Berners on them. You can locate the closest store at: http://www.ruggedbear-online.com/locstorneary.html. They have stores in NY,NJ,ME,MA,NH,CT,RI and VT. Photos are not online but the fall clothes have arrived in the stores in the last 2 weeks. There is a sweater with an intarsia standing BMD, a SUPER blue fleece pullover with an all-over BMD design that's well done(darn, the 8-10 fit me but the sleeves were too short!), a white TN with a tiny BMD on the collar, a TN with an all-over BMD design. In the sale section, there are summer, 2 piece PJs with a print of BMDs and 3 or 4 other breeds, also well drawn. The quality is good - comparable to GAP or LAND'S END. I purchased one of each for fundraising/raffles coming up this fall. I don't work for or have any connection with the store - one of my puppy owners, Debbie Dyson, alerted me to this find. I would encourage anyone with kids who would enjoy them to check them out or others willing to purchase them and forward to Joye Neff. I am not sure who's in charge of fund raising for rescue and/or education for NV but these are products that would pull in lots of cash. I spoke with the buyer and the label is KITESTRING. They make a certain number of pieces for each Rugged Bear store so when they are gone, there will be no more.If the club wanted to purchase a large number for fundraising, they will collect pieces from all the stores for us. Anyone who wants a photo can email me. I took one of each for Joye to post for the next BARC/LOC raffle. Happy Fireworks!! Linda Seaver [EMAIL PROTECTED]

WESTCHESTER BERNER WALK 2003
What a delight!! What a great, old fashioned Berner event! And the weather cooperated in an unbelievable way - holding off showers for the 2 hours we needed to enjoy the SPECTACULAR scenery overlooking the Hudson River.Talk about beginners luck!! We all need to send a big hug to Betsy Rich, owned by the handsome Gus, a newcomer to the Berner world but an old friend, (our kids went to school together). Betsy had the idea while we were walking Gus Belline one day at the Rockefeller Preserve and she posted it on the L, reposted it when a conflict arose, bought balloons, chocolate for a mini-raffle (we raised $64. for BARC, LOC and BHF) a table, umbrellas to keep the table dry dog biscuits. She also provided a charming husband, Jamie, and enthusiastic son, Alex, to host newcomers. We put out BMDCA Info sheets and cheese crackers. About 30 people and about a dozen Berners plus friends arrived to walk. How lovely to meet new people and put faces to the names I've read on the L.So relaxed, so pleasant, so non-competitive and non-political.Just friendly people who love their Berners enjoying each other's company and dogs. Betsy was a newbie who jumped in, volunteered and created a truly worthwhile Berner tradition.Thank you Betsy! Thanks also go to Hugh Hayes for taking great photos and posting them:http://www.hotdogfx.com/west_done/walk.html Please join us next Spring - we will certainly do this again and maybe get a sunny day so we can picnic and chat even longer.Luna's dad, Glen, said some of the weeping beech trees looked 200 years old - they were magnificent. Gratefully, Linda Seaver Belline Bedford, NY

PET INSURANCE
Please check the JULY issue of CONSUMER REPORTS for an objective review of Pet Insurance. After being undecided about this for a few years, I find CR's information in line with my decision to save funds in a separate account for Berner emergencies. If I need it, it's there. If I don't, the money is still in MY account and not the insurance company's.Every owner must decide for themselves but I was grateful to see the industry evaluated by an organization I trust. Cost of a Berner
Kenny Thanks for opening up this valuable conversation with your question about the cost of keeping a Berner - healthy or not. It's the kind of issue that once you has fallen in love with a dog (or person, horse or car)most of us don't necessarily care to examine. I would encourage any prospective puppy owner to visit the Drs. Foster Smith website read Cost of A Dog. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2cat=1671articleid=1543 It's an enlightening article -there are far more expenses than you would think. Once owned/loved by a Berner it feels like having a child and the thought of not doing everything I could is painful to contemplate. That's the kicker: to avoid finding yourself in the position where you have to make a difficult choice to treat or not treat a dog with an illness based on finances rather than the diagnosis, prognosis and efficacy of a specific treatment. The cost of veterinary care in the northeast many urban areas is more than in other parts of the country. I try to keep about $2500.-3000. available for emergencies. For some dogs I have used that fund - for others it was never touched. This is the way I avoid making veterinary decisions on a financial basis. I have also chosen NOT to treat dogs with life threatening illnesses because of their age (over 8) and the quality of life they would enjoy and euthanize them instead. Joy is a big issue for me: as companion dogs I feel they are here only because of our pleasure/stewardship and my dogs must have sufficient joy or chance of joy in the near future. Each owner must make this very personal decision it involves not only the family finances but ethical values, religious beliefs, education about a particular illness (Thank you Pat Long and the berner-l community) and informed, sensitive veterinary care. Pet insurance is new and there are owners who are pleased and others who are disappointed with what they purchased:another individual choice where there is not much rock solid data. There are no right or wrong choices - only ones that are made without sufficient forethought planning. Read, read and read some more because once that gorgeous ball of affection and fluff walks in your home you'll not have lots of time to educate yourself! Thanks for stimulating a good discussion and welcome to the Berner community. Peace, Linda Seaver Belline Bedford, New York
Cicker training w/ Jake
Do we go back to basics, clicking and rewarding (with treats) the sits, etc so that he starts to associate the click with the treat? Or should I just use the clicker for new tricks? Or should I just wait and use it from Day 1 with my next Berner? Maureen- Just got my copy of CLICK FOR JOY by Melissa Alezander last week. It's a Karen Pryor Clicker Book, author of the classic DON'T SHOOT THE DOG.While I wish I had read DON'T SHOOT 20 years ago (and will read it again), CLICK FOR JOY is much more user-friendly with a great question answer format. Truly a terrific book. You can click with Jake on old new behaviours, he will improve daily you will laugh a lot. Belline is 3 years old gets excited when she just sees the clicker!! She learns fast and with greater enthusiasm than she did in any class. I find it so much more fun than other training methods. You can get it through www.clickertraining .com or through www.dogwise.com. Enjoy! Linda Seaver Bedford, NY
Puppy Mill Progress
Brenda Abrams called this to my attention. No Berners that we know of but not out of the realm of possibility.A sad story, ironic that he was the Dog Control officer(!!) but cause for hope. Go Gravce! Linda Seaver Belline The Journal News A Ganette Newspaper Westchester County, New York ** Trial date set for Mahopac puppy shop By BARBARA LIVINGSTON NACKMAN THE JOURNAL NEWS (Original publication: February 21,2003) MAHOPAC The town of Carmel is intent on shutting down a commercial dog seller operating in a residential area. Beyond zoning infractions, neighbors say the business is an outlet for Midwest puppy mills. Armed with photos of trailer trucks with out-of-state plates making deliveries to Puppy Club Kennels, neighbors have argued that owner Richard Doyle sells often sickly dogs pulled too soon from their mothers. The town has accused Doyle of violating town codes for making unapproved building alterations and for operating a business in a noncommercial zone. A jury trial on criminal charges arising from an alleged failure to correct the violations will begin Thursday in Carmel Town Court. Doyle did not want to comment when reached this week. Earlier, he denied the charges, saying that as a longtime professional in the pet industry, he treats animals properly and follows state and local laws. His Austin Road neighbors, he has said, do not like that he is running a business near their homes. The town's code enforcement officer sees it differently. The retail sale of dogs must cease and desist immediately, Michael Carnazza wrote in an Oct. 3, 2002, notice of violation. Business apparently continues at Puppy Club Kennels, with advertisements appearing this week in a local publication touting 70 new puppies Yorkshire terriers, poodles and Labrador retrievers for sale. The town's Zoning Board of Appeals ruled against Doyle, refusing to grant a variance for expansion of buildings on his 275 Austin Road property or for him to sell dogs from that location. A move to overturn the decision was denied by state Supreme Court Justice S. Barrett Hickman on Jan. 30, clearing the way for the town to criminally prosecute Doyle, alleging he violated town zoning codes. The judge vacated a stay, and we can move forward with these violations that have been reported, Supervisor Frank Del Campo said.Greg Folchetti is prosecuting the case for the town. Doyle, who once served temporarily as the town's dog-control officer, has said the sale of dogs has taken place on the property since 1935 and is a pre-existing use that was upheld in 1974 and 1989 zoning board decisions.Doyle, who does not live at the site, purchased it in 1991. We are doing everything we are allowed to do and have made no structural additions, said attorney William Shilling of Curtiss, Leibell Shilling of Carmel, who represents Doyle. Last week, Shilling requested a review by the Appellate Division Second Department of the state Supreme Court. He said he also planned to file paperwork asking to reargue the case before Hickman. Dr. Brian Green, director of the Sleepy Hollow Animal Hospital since 1981,said he supported the zoning board's decision to shut down Doyle's operation. Green said this week that he had treated more ill puppies and more with congenital abnormalities that were sold from Doyle's kennel than from any other retailer in the region. Green wrote a Nov. 9 letter to town officials disclosing his findings. Paperwork accompanying the dogs he's treated from the Mahopac kennel documents that the animals were bred in Kansas, Missouri,Montana, Oklahoma or Arkansas, Green said, and are almost always from Midwest 'puppy mills.' '' It is heartbreaking and frightening that this is allowed to continue, said Green, a veterinarian for 23 years. Residents living near the business say what used to be a kennel offering pet grooming and boarding services is now a large-scale dog-selling business. Hundreds of dogs arrive each month, contend neighbors, who complain of the noise and foul smell. They say they are upset about the sale of sickly dogs, who are kept in cramped, dirty cages. Town officials, who were invited to tour the facility in January 2002, found 50 puppies housed two to a cage in a clean building on the 4-acre site. Stacks of dog supplies were kept in a dilapidated red barn, which Doyle had sought to renovate. Neighbors Grace and Christopher O'Toole have lived across the street from the business for 37 years. The couple hired an attorney to shut down the business, saying it perpetuates inhumane treatment of animals. If called, I will be a witness, Grace O'Toole said of next week's trial.Unfortunately, I have seen what has gone on there for a long time.
