Weather: Rain until after 9 EST, then drizzle for about an hour, overcast until about 12:30 EST, thereafter a mix of sun and cloud. Cold and damp until the sun appeared with winds from the north to northeast but light to moderate. Raptor Observations: Local TVs were up and about all day, even in the drizzle. Local Cooper's Hawk seen briefly in a dive and local RTs seen, particularly an immature. The Merlin appeared to be migrating, high along the edge of the escarpment. Non-raptor Observations: Surprisingly little for the date. Almost nothing but Blue Jays and bushy-tailed rats at the feeders. Barn Swallows, Purple Martins, a Great Blue Heron and Ruby-crowned Kinglets but no warblers were seen or heard. Predictions: Forecast is partly sunny and warmer with light winds. This could help improve the flow but birds may be high. Report submitted by John Stevens () Grimsby, ON - Beamer Conservation Area information may be found at: http://www.niagarapeninsulahawkwatch.org/ Site Description: Hawk migration monitoring at the Beamer Memorial Conservation Area in Grimsby, Ontario is conducted by the Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch (NPH). All counting is done by volunteers. Not all members are counters nor does a counter have to be a member. Typically one person is the designated counter for each day but other observers present assist with the spotting and identification. Counting is done from a steel observation tower with a wooden floor. For wind protection on cold days, particularly in March, a black plastic wind guard is installed around the tower's platform. This platform easily accommodates ten people but on most busy days, no more than five or six observers would be on it. The site lies within a publicly accessible property owned by the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority. There is no charge for admittance. The tower stands in the centre of a mowed area with a gravel ring road near the outer edge. This provides lots of room to park vehicles (along the road) and set up lawn chairs, telescopes and cameras. Toilet facilities are present. During the counting season, the NPH erect a counting board to display seven day's worth of observation data for the public. The box enclosing the sign contains brochures and silhouette sheets for the public as well as bulletin boards with news and historical sighting records. Directions to site: To get to Beamer CA, take the QEW to Exit 71/72, follow Christie St./Mountain St. to the top of the escarpment, turn right on Ridge Road West, and go 1.6km to Quarry Rd. Turn right on Quarry Rd. and drive 100m to the conservation area. Parking is normally available inside the park. If parking at the entrance or on the roads, do NOT leave valuables in your car. Re: [Ontbirds] White-winged Dove Rondeau
Birders: The White-winged Dove was still being seen at Rondeau at least into the middle of the afternoon today. However it can move around quite a bit. Shortly after Dan and I saw it at cottage lot 17134, it flew north and out of sight. I re-found the bird later, and right at the same location where it was first seen this morning, at lot 17266. There is a feeder beside that cottage, and the bird was observed to hunt for food under it on at least one occasion. It spent most of its time in the willow tree closer to the road. Photos on my blog: pawsnaturenuggets.blogspot.ca Directions: exit Hwy 401 at interchange 101 and head south on Chatham-Kent Road 15 straight to the park entrance. The bird was along Lakeshore Road, south of the Visitor Centre. Despite the rain there was an obvious movement of birds into Point Pelee overnight. More of the common species such Rose-breasted Grosbeak and Baltimore Oriole, as well as White-throated & White-crowned Sparrows, Hermit, Veery and Wood Thrush are being seen in bigger numbers. The duck flock on the west side of the Tip included both White-winged and Black Scoter this morning, as well and Bufflehead and Common Goldeneye. Horned Grebe are still showing well with 7 birds at the Tip and others scattered along the west beach. Warblers at the Tip included: Black-and-white; Nashville, Yellow, Yellow-rumped and Palm. Warbling Vireo was also seen at the Tip. The Woodland Trail continues to have Blue-winged Warbler and Blue-headed Vireo at various locations between the Visitor Centre and Bridge C. A Prothonotary Warbler was reported along the marsh edge of the east side of the Woodland Trail. Good numbers of thrush, sparrow, and grosbeak are also on Woodland. Brown Thrashers were flashing across the main trail of the Woodland Trail. An early Yellow-billed Cuckoo was reported on the West Beach Trail, originally at the south end of the parking lot but was seen flying north. Outside of the Park the Black-necked Stilt has been seen again on the east end of Concession 1 in the flooded fields on the south side of Hillman Marsh east of the first 2 houses. Hot off the press is a beautifully plumaged Piping Plover at the south end of the West Beach parking lot. Re: [Ontbirds] Peregrine Falcon in Brampton
On Sunday, May 1, 2016, at approximately 5:00 PM, I observed a peregrine falcon landing atop one lamp stand in the southernmost part of the parking lot of the Superstore located on Lancashire Lane, which is just south of the southwest corner of Steeles Avenue and Hurontario/Main St., as I entered the store. It was still there when I exited, but then flew off to the southwest. However, I saw it return as I reached my car and perch atop a different lamp stand. I drove close enough to see a little detail, and although did not have my bins with me, could make out its malar stripes. Body detail was hidden from view by the lights on the stand. I had also seen it earlier in the afternoon, about 1:45 PM, as I was driving west along Steeles Avenue towards Hurontario/Main, (which is why I was on the lookout for it when I went to Superstore). It was flying in the sky above Superstore, chasing a pigeon. Both birds flew out of view, obscured by trees and the Superstore building, so I do not know whether the peregrine succeeded in capturing its prey. I suspect there may be a nest somewhere nearby. D.
