[Ontbirds] Ottawa area: Razorbill, Purple Sandpipers, and Golden Eagles

2017-10-31 Thread Bruce Di Labio via ONTBIRDS
Hi Everyone
Great day birding the Ottawa River with numerous highlights. This morning
at around 8:00 a.m. while birding Dick Bell Park I observed 3 Purple
Sandpipers. There were a number of small flocks of Dunlin over the river as
well as 2 Sanderling, 2 Pectoral Sandpipers and 4 Brant. The Purples were
very nervous and didn't land on the rocky point but continued flying west.
There were a number of scoters on the river including 40+ Black, 4 Surf
and 2 White-winged along with 18 male Long-tailed Ducks. At least one late
lingering Great Egret was present at Andrew Haydon Park.
Late morning I birded Constance Bay. With the changing weather conditions
I headed to the point area to view the Ottawa River/Constance Bay. Within a
few minutes I spotted my first Golden Eagle migrating south overhead and
after an hour I observed 6 Golden and 1 Bald Eagle. My highest one day
count ever for Golden's in the Ottawa area. This once rare species has
been been increasing in numbers over the past 3 decades. At around 12:30
pm I spotted a Razorbill offshore. The bird disappeared twice for a period
of time but fortunately was present when the first group of birders from
Ottawa arrived but later disappeared offshore again for any late arrivals.
This represents the second record for the Ottawa district. A total of 9
Purple Sandpipers were found during the day.

Good birding,
Bruce Di Labio

Directions: Constance Bay is located NW of Ottawa off Dunrobin Road and
Point Restaurant is off Bayview Drive. Dick Bell Park is located off
Carling Ave.

Re: [Ontbirds] Constance Bay: Razorbill

2017-10-31 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
The Razorbill is still present! We are currently looking at it from the beach
about a few hundred metres north of the beach parking lot behind The Point
restaurant that Bruce described in his email below. It is swimming south along
the beach rather quickly but was a few hundred metres north when we arrived. It
is now a ways out offshore but was less than 100m away when we arrived.

Ridiculously good birding!

[Ontbirds] Red Phalarope at Presqu'ile

2017-10-31 Thread Bree, David (MNRF) via ONTBIRDS
There is a Red Phalarope at Owen Point at Presqu'ile Prov. Park. It has been
feeding in some puddles on top of the algae mat but has moved north and into
the lake a bit. It is the only bird out there. The gale force winds ensure
those that have gone out for a look don't stay long!

Directions
1. Take HIGHWAY 401
2. Exit at Northumberland County Road 30 exit (exit number 509)- towards
BRIGHTON/CAMPBELLFORD
3. Turn South onto County Road 30 go 4.86 km and
4. Turn West (right) onto County Road 2 at lights go 0.81 km and
5. Turn South (left) onto County Road 66 (Ontario Street) go about 4 km by
6. following road around two big bends (right-across causeway-left) and it
takes you right into the park.
7. Take a tabloid from the gate and the map will show you Owen Pt. Parking in
the Park Store Parking lot and walk out.
8. Note: a valid park pass is required for all vehicles in the park - there is
a pay and display machine at the gate
