approximately 30 yards east of the fenced off rock jetty.

Saddington Park is at the south end of Mississaugua Rd where it meets Lake

Re: [Ontbirds] Dickcissel, Simcoe County, Oro-Medonte Line 8 and Old Barrie Rd.

2016-06-12 Thread robert . cumming
As an addendum to my previous post. The 1st bird was found in the field
northwest of Old Barrie and Line 8. Howard Shapiro and I located a possible 2nd
bird in the field southeast of the corner. This 2nd bird was seen landing in
the middle of the field with another similar size bird... Possible nest site??
A problem may exist as both fields appear ready to be cropped.

Location is Line 8 Oro-Medonte and Old Barrie Rd several miles north of Barrie
off Hwy 11.

Re: [Ontbirds] Wilson's Plover still present at 3:45 PM - Hanlan's Beach, Toronto Islands

2015-05-29 Thread Robert Cumming
Please note that TRCA and BSC representatives have started putting up fences
and signage to protect the nesting efforts of the Piping Plovers.
If you go to Hanlan’s to see the Wilson’s Plover or Piping Plovers, please
respect the signs and fences and walk only along the water-edge strip. The
birds are active in the gravel/sand about 5-20 yards from the edge.

Good birding,
Bob

[Ontbirds] Wet Wooods at Tommy Thompson Park

2011-04-20 Thread robert . cumming
A brief stop this afternoon at the Wet Woods at the base of Tommy Thompson
Park. The name is apt after the recent down pours. You will need your boots at
the moment.

It was fairly quiet, other than Red-wing Blackbirds:

Fox Sparrow (several) on the Unwin side of the Woods;
Coopers Hawk (may be partially responsible for the low number of birds)
Northern Flicker
Brown creeper
Tree Swallows
Golden-crowned Kinglet
American Goldfinch
American Woodcock
other usuals
Tommy Thompson Park is at the base of Leslie Street and the Wet Woods can be
accessed from the walking paths off Unwin during the weekdays (from the Parking
Lot on Weekends)

[Ontbirds] Varied Thrush at Cold Creek- still there Sunday

2010-02-01 Thread robert . cumming
My son and I saw the thrush feeding on the corn on Sunday at about 3 PM. He
appears briefly from the spruce trees, eats quickly, and returns to his
seclusion. A beautiful bird!

Cold Creek Conservation Area is located on the 11th Concession, between
the 15th and 16th Sideroads. From the South, take HWY #27 North to King
Road (Nobleton). Turn left on King Road and drive for 4 km to the 11th
Concession (look for the sign for YMCA Cedar Glen Camp) and turn right
(North). Cold Creek Conservation Area is about 3.5 km on the right, with a
large sign out front. Park on the side of the road into Cold Creek. The
first (and only) driveway on the right is the location. Walk down the
driveway a short distance, and try to keep back from where it splits. The
thrush feeds on the corn kernels on the stumps.

highlights:

about 30 Upland Sandpipers with one flock of 14 on Shrike RdLeast Bittern at
the Prospect Rd marshSora and Virginia Rails at ProspectLoggerhead Shrike close
to the road at the north end of Shrike Rd (about 2/3 of the way up)3 Sandhill

except for Cuckoos and Golden-winged Warbler which I usually miss for whatever
reason. On the way home we stopped at Reesor Pond (just South of Hwy 7 off
Reesor Rd near Markham) we stopped and noted two Great Egrets (no shorebirds
made their presence known)

Directions(thanks to Norm M.):

-CARDEN ALVAR INCLUDING WYLIE ROAD / THE SEDGE WREN MARSH / PROSPECT ROAD ALONG
WITH A FEW AREAS SOUTHWEST OF KIRKFIELD

Wylie
Road is north of Kirkfield in Victoria County and Kirkfield itself is
on County Road 48 east of Highway 12 and well north of Whitby and about
130 km from Toronto if you follow the roads and not a Crow.

From
the centre of Kirkfield go north on County Road 6 passing under the
Lift Lock on the Trent Canal and drive about 2 ½ km further north to
where the road curves left or west. On this curve and on your right is
McNamee Road, turn right here onto McNamee and drive east for about 300
yards and you will be at Wylie Road. This road is about 9 ½ km long
ending at Alvar Road (a T intersection). Birding can be good on Alvar
Road as well, either way.

The Sedge Wren Marsh is about 5 ½ km
up Wylie Road, you can’t miss it as it has the only bridge along the
road. Park just to the south of and overlooking the bridge and walk the
road. Birding is good all along the road and I find that the best
birding happens when you park and walk both ways a km or two from your
auto.

This is a narrow road with little traffic but be sure
to park in such a way as to not block the road or at the gravelled
parking areas that you will find at several places along the road as
you don’t want to rile up the locals. This is all private property but
there really is no need to leave the road, nor should you. Please
respect the property rights of the land owners.

Other roads to
check in the area areProspect (west of Kirkfield and south off 48 about 2 Km to
public marsh), Shrike, Curl’s, Dalrymple, Eldon Station,
Rockview, Doyle, Palestine, Creek View, and McNamee Road, etc.

A nice variety of new migrants were reported this morning. Numbers were not
large but they were steady. Most exciting was the well observed Worm-eating
Warbler near the Monarch Butterfly display. With patience, and a little
luck, many birders were able to get good looks at this bird. Also present
in the Tip area was Yellow-breasted Chat (possibly two), White-eyed Vireo,
Golden-winged and Blue-winged Warbler, Northern Parula, Northern
Mockingbird and Eastern Bluebird. Once again, Little Gull was observed at
or off the Tip early in the morning and a couple of Dunlin foraged there
briefly. A little wave of Black-and-white Warblers appears to have moved
into the Park as was evident by their song. Increasing numbers of observers
are seeing Scarlet Tanager, and Baltimore and Orchard Oriole numbers seem
to be increasing daily.

A male Summer Tanager was reported from near the Prickly Pear Cactus
display, just north of the Visitor centre parking lot, but no details were
submitted and it has yet to be relocated.

The Eurasian Wigeon was seen as recently as last night at the Hillman Marsh
shorebird

[Ontbirds]A chance encounter - Ring Billed Gull

2005-04-26 Thread Robert Cumming
Every once in a while we are permitted to participate in an experience with
nature that can be described as inspirational or even spiritual.

This morning at about 6 a.m. I was walking to work south on Jarvis just below
Gerrard. I noticed a young girl in a baseball hat and on roller blades
examining what I thought was a discarded jogging shoe near the curb. Further
out in the southbound lane were the recent remains of an unfortunate gull that
had been hit by an earlier commuter.

As I came closer the jogging shoe became a Ring Billed Gull lying quietly near
the curb and staring at the remains 15 feet away. The young girl wanted to know
if this gull was mourning the loss of its mate. It's just a gull that was
probably injured She then said that she wanted to move the second bird to a
grassy spot for safety but didn't know how to pick it up. As I neared the bird,
it looked gently up at me and let me pick it up and move it to the grassy spot.
It didn't appear injured and quickly stood up and raised both wings . It didn't
fly but appeared to be standing watch over its fallen comrade. The young girl
asked again if I thought it was mourning the loss of a mate .

It's just a gull. I wonder ???

The HURON FRINGE BIRDING FESTIVAL (8th Annual) just keeps growing and now
offers 82 hikes, presentations and workshops related to birds and nature.
This is probably the most diverse and comprehensive nature festival offered
anywhere in North America. It offers a wide range of birding activities -
workshops on Sparrows (John Haselmayer), Warblers (Mark Wiercinski), and
Nesting of Ontario's Breeding Birds (George Peck). Also, offered are
classes for Beginning Birders (Peter Middleton and Martin Parker) and hikes
for the experienced - Birding by Ear and Bird Until you Drop (by Michael
Carlson). Participate in a Birdathon or take one of the many birding hikes
offered, from a group of expert birders and naturalists.

The afternoons feature many nature related hikes that will cover whatever
your interests are from wildflowers, geology, insects, reptiles,
butterflies, nature hikes, botanical medicines, forestry, dragonflies,
archaeology, photography, to ecology.

The evenings have presentations by excellent speakers followed by owl prowl=
s
and star gazing.=20
