Subject: [Blind-Computing] Victor Stream, where's the best place to get one

Hi all. For Christmas my folks are going to get me a Victor Stream
or a comparable device. I really don't know a lot about which players are
the best on the market, but I've heard the most about the Victor Stream and
will most likely go with that one.

I'm looking for advice on where to purchase one and what site might have the
best deal on prices, etc? I want to make the best economical purchase, or I
should say my folks' purchase, possible. I figure I should also keep in
mind any potential warrantees, repair policies, etc. Things sure have a
habit of breaking. Any other thoughts on the matter are welcome. Thanks
and happy holidays.

Chris

Happy holidays, fellow listers. I have a question about defragging the C
drive in my Dell workstation. Today, for the first time, I used Auslogics
Disk Defrag, and the result was that more than 6200 files were fragmented.
In all my previous defrags using the built-in Windows XP Disk
Defragmentation utility , no more than 10 fragmented files were ever
detected. How can there be such a discrepancy in results between Auslogics
Disk Defrag and the Windows Defrag utility? It seems to me that a file is
either fragmented or it isn't, so how could one utility find so many more
fragmented files than the other? Thanks for any explanations.

Are you certain that you are talking about the computer name and not the
user name? I do not believe the computer name will show up anywhere in
 the
menus. Type Network into the Start menu search box to get a list of
computers and devices on your network.

To change your network name or workgroup name, press the Windows key + the
Break key (the last key on the right end of the function keys), to bring
 up
the System Control Panel. Hit Tab until you get to a button labeled
Change, and press Space. Press Tab to the Change Name or something
similar button. In this dialog and press Space. It will now allow you to
change the computer name and workgroup name. As you press the Ok button,
 it

 will ask you to restart.

 Hi,

 I have a question.

I recently purchased a new laptop with windows seven
professional and I made a mistake which I don't know how to undo/change.

There was an area where I typed the name of the computer which I typed my
name but made a typo. Is there a way I can fix this?

My name shows correctly on the start menu, and the welcome screen but not
 in
the user folder in the local drive.

Select the folder and press the Applications key to bring up the context

Pressing F2 when the folder is selected should also work.

If so what is your experience like? Preferibly for those who are totally

$14.99, it's a great value for a blind-accessible MP3 player.

JAWS does not work well with Microsoft Live Mail! Since Outlook Express and

Windows Mail are not available in Windows7, people are forced to switch to
something. FS has scripts for Live Mail in JAWS 10 and 11, but they have
lots of flaws. The JAWS 10 scripts actually work better for me than JAWS
11. I can not even read mail with JAWS 11! I need to switch to JAWS 10
every time I want to read mail. This gets very agravating! The scripts for

JAWS 10 are less annoying and my biggest complaint is that it will not
announce unread or indicate when there is an enclosure. FS is very aware
of the problem, do not seem interested in fixing the problems or even
admitting that they have scripts for Live Mail. They seem to think that
everybody should dish out more money for Outlook, since that is what all of
their corporate accounts require.

I am seriously thinking of switching to Thunderbird 3 as well, and I have
more interesting things to do than play around with a mail program. I have
downloaded the program, but have other things to do.

I'm completely confused as to why, if folks are experiencing so much
difficulty, they are prone to use browsers and e-mail clients other than
Internet Explorer and Windows Mail or Outlook. I understand the glamour

of being able to identify one's self as a non-conformist and hence using
tools other than those provided by Microsoft, but considering the
difficulties I've seen on various lists I wouldn't touch any of these
tools with someone else's screen reader. Obviously, JAWS has been
developed and delivered complete with strong support files to interact
with Internet Explorer and any of the Microsoft e-mail clients. I presume

the same can be said for WindowEyes. So, why not not use what works best
given the framework of needing to use a screen reader?

I guess, that since I was a software developer for so many years, I find
no personal satisfaction in being able to say I am not a conformist. I
just want to use what works the best given my limitations.

If the reason for using the non-Microsoft tools is enhanced security, then

why not take the entire plunge and move to Linux?

to regard a coffin-nail as the deadest piece of ironmongery in the trade.
But the wisdom of our ancestors is in the simile; and my unhallowed hands

[Blind-Computing] changing computer name

2009-12-17 Thread blindguy
Hi,

I have a question.

I recently purchased a new laptop with windows seven
professional and I made a mistake which I don't know how to undo/change.

There was an area where I typed the name of the computer which I typed my
name but made a typo. Is there a way I can fix this?

My name shows correctly on the start menu, and the welcome screen but not in
the user folder in the local drive.

How would you change the user name then?

Are you certain that you are talking about the computer name and not the
user name? I do not believe the computer name will show up anywhere in the
menus. Type Network into the Start menu search box to get a list of
computers and devices on your network.

To change your network name or workgroup name, press the Windows key + the
Break key (the last key on the right end of the function keys), to bring up
the System Control Panel. Hit Tab until you get to a button labeled
Change, and press Space. Press Tab to the Change Name or something
similar button. In this dialog and press Space. It will now allow you to
change the computer name and workgroup name. As you press the Ok button, it

will ask you to restart.
