Thanks Max, yes I did ask. I also had Patty check out some of them and she said the same thing. They aren't all like that but enough of them I'm sure. I could fix it but the time it would take me might be a real problem. I guess it will have to be an on going kind of thing. It may be easier to try and figure out how to make all of the files download links for everybody to open them up in note pad. I must consider these things before I proceed. RE: [BlindHandyMan] using a table saw.
I should add a couple of details about this panel cutter, now that I'm thinking about it. There are times when I have wanted to push some board stock, on edge, through a dado blade on the table saw. This can be a problem since the panel cutter has a back edge reveal of only three-quarters of an inch. What I've done is drilled a couple of holes through the back edge of the panel cutter, through which I can pass a couple of carriage bolts, fastened with wing nuts to the back side of the panel cutter edge. The heads of the carriage bolts are countersunk on the work-facing side of a one-by board. This gives me the necessary surface to handle one-by and two-by boards with enough stability to pass through the dado blade on the table saw. I've even gone so far as to clamp the work to this panel cutter back edge extension. It actually works quite well. Did I explain that okay? --Barry To listen to the show archives go to link http://acbradio.org/handyman.html or ftp://ftp.acbradio.org/acbradio-archives/handyman/ The Pod Cast address for the Blind Handy Man Show is. http://www.acbradio.org/news/xml/podcast.php?pgm=saturday The Pod Cast address for the Cooking In The Dark Show is. http://www.gcast.com/u/cookingindark/main.xml Visit The New Blind Handy Man Files Page To Review Contributions From Various List Members At The Following Address: http://www.jaws-users.com/handyman/ Visit the new archives page at the following address http://www.mail-archive.com/blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com/ For a complete list of email commands pertaining to the Blind Handy Man list just send a blank message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yahoo! [BlindHandyMan] cleaning and Sealing Concrete
Hi Want to improve the looks of your patio, sidewalk or driveway and help protect it from the ravages of weather? Here's the way to do it. Cleaning Concrete Steps: 1. Rent a portable power washer from your local tool rental center or home improvement center. These come in either electric- or gasoline-powered models that use a home garden hose as a water source and use a spray wand like a car wash to deliver a stream of pressurized water. 2. Wet the concrete to be cleaned, and then apply the cleaning product of your choice according to the directions. These chemical products help to strip off grease, oil and dirt, and some actually help to bleach and brighten the appearance of the concrete. A solution of 50% bleach and 50% water makes a pretty good, inexpensive cleaner. 3. Use a long-handled scrub brush to maximize cleaning potential as the cleaner is applied. 4. Rinse the concrete thoroughly with the power washer. Make sure to remove all the solution and any loose debris from the concrete. 5. Allow the slab to dry completely. Sealing Concrete Steps: 1. Find the total surface area you will be sealing by measuring its length and width and multiplying these figures. Take the numbers with you to the home improvement center, lumberyard or hardware store when you buy sealer. 2. Purchase concrete sealer premixed in one-gallon or larger containers. It is made to be rolled on with a roller assembly. 3. Apply thin, even coats of the sealer. It is better to put on two lighter coats that will dry evenly than one heavy, blotchy coat. 4. Allow the sealer to dry completely before using the treated area. The newly available brush-on resurfacers restore a like-new appearance to walks, drives and patios. Often they're the only way to disguise a repaired concrete surface, such as porch steps. Steps: 1. Make any required repairs to large cracks, broken corners, steps or similar concrete damage (see How to Fix Cracked or Damaged Concrete). 2. Cut back any grass or plants along a walk or driveway you're resurfacing, and press foam backer rods into expansion joints so you won't end up filling them with resurfacer. 3. Pretreat stains, which can interfere with bonding, using muriatic acid. Dilute the acid in a plastic pail or spray bottle by adding 1 part of 20 percent acid to 4 parts water (see Warning). Carefully apply the acid solution to the affected areas using a brush or spray bottle. Allow it to work for a few minutes, then hose it off. 4. Wash surfaces from the center outward. Use a hose and nozzle or (better) a pressure washer, which you can rent. 5. Use a shop vacuum to clear loose material out of cracks. Don't blow it out or you'll contaminate the surfaces you just cleaned. 6. After you've gathered your tools, soak the surface with water and brush off any standing water. 7. Mix the resurfacer with water as directed, using a 1/2-inch (12-mm) drill with a paddle mixer. 8. Level depressions and fill small cracks. Allow these repairs to dry before coating the entire surface. 9. On horizontal surfaces, apply resurfacer with a trowel on small areas, such as stair treads, or with a wide squeegee on large areas, such as walks. For vertical surfaces, such as stair risers, mix the material with slightly more water and apply it with a plaster brush. Have containers of water available so you can quickly rinse off trowels and brooms between uses. Work in manageable sections. Proper application techniques take some practice, and the material sets up quickly (in about 20 minutes). 10. Finish and texture the material as you apply it. For a smooth surface, use a steel trowel in a circular pattern. For a slightly rougher texture, use a wood float, which you can make by putting a handle on a block of wood that has slightly rounded corners. For the very rough finish typical of sidewalks, draw a stiff broom or brush across the surface. Overall Tips: Use liquid-concrete colorant as directed to color the resurfacer. Overall Warnings: Muriatic acid is highly corrosive. Read the warning label carefully. Wear goggles and rubber gloves, and never add the water to the acid. It will spatter like water added to hot fat. Wear work gloves, knee pads and other protective clothing as needed. [BlindHandyMan] How to Use a Hand Saw
Hi A clean cut depends on a steady hand. Follow these steps for cutting wood safely with a handsaw. Steps: 1. Measure the wood with a tape measure and mark it with a straight edge for cutting. Draw a line along the desired cut - this is your cutline. Clamp a piece of 2x1 or what ever you use for a straight edge along this line, this is your guide for cutting . 2. Clamp the wood to a workbench or sawhorse with the area to be cut easily accessible. 3. Rest a handsaw on the far edge of the cutline, with most of the teeth past the wood. Angle the saw's tip down slightly. The handle should be slightly above the level of your elbow. 4. Grasp the saw's handle with one hand; maintain a firm but relaxed grip. ( 5. Hold the wood steady with your other hand, keeping your hand a safe distance from the saw - this will be your guide hand. 6. Loop the thumb of your guide hand over the top of the wood. 7. Pull the saw toward you once, pressing down firmly. Pick up the saw, replace it in your original position, and pull toward you a second time. 8. Repeat until you have cut a notch in the wood's edge. 9. Level the saw slightly and continue sawing back and forth. ( 10. Press down less heavily as you come to the end of the task to avoid splintering the wood. Tips: If you lose sight of the cutline in the sawdust, stop sawing, close your eyes, and blow the dust away before continuing. For milled lumber, use a small-toothed saw. For tree limbs or wood that can be cut roughly, use a saw with bigger teeth. Avoid cutting through knots in the wood whenever possible. Warnings: Watch your fingers. As you finish cutting, be careful not to drop the saw through onto your leg. Using a handsaw isn't as much work as people make it out to be. Follow these directions for relatively pain-free sawing. Steps: 1. Mark a line where you will be cutting. 2. Support both sides of the work on a bench or sawhorse. 3. Take time to get comfortable before you start sawing. 4. Make sure that the teeth of your saw are sharp. Dull teeth make more work and a less precise cut. 5. Line up your wrist, elbow and shoulder with the saw blade. 6. Remember that you will lose about 1/8-inch of wood with the cut due to the width of the blade, so cut on the outside of the line. 7. Apply slight pressure on the push strokes and relax on the pulls. 8. Saw with a steady, easy rhythm. 9. Keep in mind that the more acute the degree, the faster and rougher the cut. Hold the saw at a 90-degree angle for a quick, raw cut; 45 degrees for smooth cuts; and 15 to 20 degrees for very fine cuts. Tips: Consider wearing work gloves for added comfort and protection when you saw. Warnings: Wear goggles and a dust mask when sawing. [BlindHandyMan] How to Use a Table Saw
Hi The table saw is one of the most popular tools in the workshop, but it is potentially very dangerous. Make sure you know how to use it safely. Steps: 1. Make sure you are using the correct blade and that it's properly seated and tightened. Always use a sharp blade. Dull blades bind and overheat. 2. Check the blade guard. Is it in good shape and functioning properly? 3. Make sure the blade is in alignment. 4. Set the blade height to no more than 1/2 inch above the workpiece. The wood is more likely to kick back if you have too much blade exposed. 5. Look for knots and nails before you begin. Avoid them if possible; if they cannot be avoided, be cautious when approaching them. 6. Start the blade before it meets the work. 7. Stand to the side when you saw in case the wood is kicked back, and don't over-reach. You should always have both feet planted firmly on the floor. 8. Don't push the wood into the blade, just feed it into the blade with a little pressure. Use a push stick to keep your hands clear of the blade. 9. Press the work firmly against the guide fence as you cut. 10. Always use the blade guards. 11. Wait for the blade to stop before removing it from the wood. Tips: Familiarize yourself with your saw. Read the owner's manual carefully and heed all safety suggestions Warnings: Wear goggles and a dust mask when operating your table saw. Never saw wet wood Make sure your cuts are straight. Check the alignment of your blade before every cutting session. Steps: 1. Set the saw blade and miter gauge to 0 degrees. 2. Cut a short length of a 2-by-4 board. 3. Place both pieces of the 2-by-4 on a flat surface and match up the ends. 4. Turn one piece over and match the ends again. If there is a gap, the blade is out of alignment. 5. Check your owner's manual on how to realign the blade. RE: [BlindHandyMan] Spring Time in Australia
Hi Lee I think I might train one of these bloody kangaroos as a Handy Man Helper for they have a Pouch where you could keep tools and screws while doing your handy man jobs . They move so quickly that you could say hop back to my shed and get me the saw etc The only thing is if you upset them they kick the shit out of you You would never have to mow the grass again just let them go for it. They would be Great for holding a board at one end while sawing The best thing is if they gave you to much lip, have them as kangaroo steaks on your BBQ I will send a couple over for your next Space Flight. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Very dangerous scam
It actually doesn't have anything to do with handy man stuff, how ever Don and I were hoping it would burn itself out so we wouldn't need to say anything. Trust me folks we are both always keeping an eye on this list pretty much at all times. So let us do our jobs people. We don't want to constantly be jumping down throats on here especially for the most part everybody on this list is an adult. [BlindHandyMan] Panel jig
Hi Dale and Barry, I am trying to understand the concept of the jig you have for cutting sheets of plywood with a table saw. I understand the piece of oak or whatever that attaches to the bottom and slides along the groove in the table. I am foggy on the rest. Do you make the jig about the same length as the pieces of plywood you're wanting to cut? I gather that the first or most basic fence is along the side of the stock (parallel to the saw blade) and that you can add a fence at the end if you want. Is this correct? Don't you need the jig to be on both sides of the blade so the stock will lay flat? It seems like having the jig only on the side with the long fence would mean the stock would tilt. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Panel jig
No Ralph, Think of a large fixed miter gauge only it has a sheet of material.which slides over the table top. This is intended to cross cut panels like maybe a cabinet door. Let us say a three foot by two foot sheet of thin plywood. Along one three foot edge you fix a three foot or longer piece of straight wood, preferably hardwood maybe a two by two. On the under side of this sheet and running parallel to the two foot dimension you attach a strip which runs in the miter slot. You lay the panel to be cut on this sheet aligning it with the two by two fence and push the lot through the saw. If you remove your rip fence, usually that side of the saw will have a table extension and this will give you a bit more support for the jig. You can make the jig large enough to span the saw for even larger panels. I recently read of a jig one fellow made for cutting very accurately, a series of pieces, 12 I think for gluing up to be turned on a lathe. This he called a sled and specifically designed for those very precise cuts. If you want more information or a better explanation just ask. Re: [BlindHandyMan] How to Repair a Washerless Spring and Seat Faucet
I am guess Ray that the same procedure would be used for a washerless faucet with both a hot and cold handle? Just today I asked my wife to turn the spicket to the other sink as that drip drip drip was a pain in the ear drum. Last time she called a plumber and it was a $74 dollar job which stopped the dripping for about a week. So next day when all is calm around here we'll give it a go and if not replace the whole thing with a plastic setup which seems to last longer in our hard water.
