Hi dale,

Sorry my friend, but if the laptop is fried, then I can take it to someone that
will buy it for parts and give me a good price for the overall thing.

The screen alone is worth about $300 and the hard drive, even though it is only
a 40 gig drive is worth, at least $60, all of which I can put together towards
the purchase of a new laptop.

Suffice it to say, had I not had this resource, I would gladly ship it to you
for experimentation.

Better luck next time.

  Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Drill Doctor story

I purchased a Drill Doctor drill bit sharpener several years ago. It has to
be at least 6 or 7 years. They had just come out on the market not too long
before I bought it. The model that I bought was the one that would sharpen
drill bits up to 3/4. It would make both standard and split point drills and
sharpen masonary bits. I think it is a model 750.

I thought the unit was ok, but after a while I had some problems with it.
There are two chucks for holding the drill bits. One is for bits up to 1/2
and the other one is for bits on up to 3/4. The 1/2 chuck fell apart and it
was a bear to get back together! It has a bunch of fingers and little spring
clips that hold the fingers to the chuck. It took me over an hour to get the
parts all back together at the same time. Another issue was that the chuck
would not always rotate easily in the guide hole. I tried numerous things to
solve this issue, with little in the way of positive results.

I called Drill Doctor's home company to see if I could purchase a new 1/2
chuck and to inquire about the fitment problem. I must have owned the machine
for about 4 or 5 years by this time. The lady was extremely nice and asked me
a couple of questions about the machine itself. I remember that one thing she
asked me was if the unit had a slide switch or a rocker switch on it. I told
her that it had a slide switch. She told me that there were some issues with
that model and they would send me a complete , new unit. I gave her all my
address information and I recieved a new unit in less than a week. All that I
had to do was pay a bit of shipping to send the old unit back to them.

Needless to say, I was shocked and thrilled!!! The unit was way past its
warranty and I didn't expect them to do anything even close to replacing the
unit. The new unit will do all the same things that the old one was supposed
to do, and it does it a lot better. They have improved the way the chucks are
designed and the chucks fit and work properly in the ports on the eunit.

I am not convinced that it always sharpens bits as good as they were when
new, but it does a pretty good job. Another good thing is that it is totally
accessible to a blind guy.

These are a must for anyone who uses bits a lot. I can't say enough good
things about the company for standing behind their product.

  Take care-- Mickey

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Oh rats.

2006-09-08 Thread Mark M
Jim,

I got several of those sound devices from Home Depot about four years ago,
and was delighted when the mice seemed to vanish within a couple of days.
Then I was disappointed when the mice came back within a few weeks, even
though the sound devices were still in place. I guessed that the little
buggers just learned to put up with the noise. I think that was the same
year that I tried leaving lots of moth balls wherever the mice liked to go.
Stunk up the whole house but didn't phase the mice.

That story about the sound devices reminds me of the time that I went to an
outdoor shooting range. The area between the shooting platform and the
targets was thick with birds and rabbits. They had apparently just learned
to accept the constant blasting of guns and the bullets whizzing over head,
and they didn't flinch at all.

I have used the sticky pads in the past. The ones which the professionals
leave are much, much more effective. The ones you can purchase, for the
 most
part, are not as sticky and just do not do the job. What is supposed to
happen is that the critter will try to chew the pad off and then get its
muzzle stuck and suffocate very quickly.
For larger mice these pads just do not do the trick as they seem to be
 able
to pull themselves off and leave you some nice mouse hair...
I really like the idea oa a Rat Zapper. Also, on e of the most effective
methods I have seen are the live traps. They are aluminum boxes the mice
crawl into and can not get out.
Without a source of water the mouse will die from dehydration in a matter
 of
hours. The dehydrated mouse also will not stink.

My personal way of dealing with the sticky pads is to have my husband and
son check them and then take the little guys outside to die. However, if
 I
had something on one and had to deal with it myself, I would use the tip
given to me by a friend of mine. She throws a towel over them and then
bangs them with a hammer. The whole thing then goes into the trash.
 Sounds
awful, but it is actually a much more humane way to go than a traditional
mouse or rat trap or the sticky pads.

Be careful when you buy the sticky pads. They sell these ones that are
supposed to be for bugs and rodents. They are just little flat pads, and
they work great for catching ants, but they have to be folded in some box
thing to catch mice. Even when folded they do not seem to work very well.
Make sure you get the ones for the size critter you want to catch. We get
 the Tom Cat brand.

I have been learning a lot about them as we have had a lot of trouble with
mice where we live now. I think it is the ongoing construction and
 development in the area.

Does anyone besides me find that you can just smell the little horrible
things after you know what the smell is? I can remember smelling that
 smell
before in people houses and not knowing what it was.

[BlindHandyMan] Building your own computer.

2006-09-08 Thread Dan Rossi
Hi guys,

I am thinking about building my own machine and want to know if anyone out
there has reasonable resources for information about motherboards.

The only reason I am thinking of building my own machine is that I have a
brand new 250 GB hard drive, a pretty new CD RW, I already have a monitor
that is good enough, mouse and keyboard, sound card, Windows XP Pro, blah
blah blah. I would like to pick up a bare bones system, case, power
supply, motherboard, processor, and some memory, but it is pretty
difficult to find that. So, I started poking around looking at
possibilities.

It is amazing to see just how many different motherboards there are out
there and how many different issues you need to be aware of. I saw lots
of issues with people saying things like this mobo requires 1.8 volt
memory and I only had 2.2 volt memory. Hell, I didn't realize that memory
even ran at different voltages. You have to be willing and able to flash
the bios when you get a new mobo. Not easy to do if you can't get it to
boot first. There is CAS 4 and 5 and blah blah blah memory. If the front
side bus is running at this speed you need this and that of that speed.

So, I am pretty sure some folks on here have built computers from the
ground up, Trouble? victor? does anyone know of a book or web site that
can walk a novice through some of this stuff?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question for the Engineers

2006-09-08 Thread A. Chew
some advice already posted makes sense... some does not...

if you can hear stuff going on... that suggest its not battery or power...
especially if the same thing happens when you are plugged into wall power.

I think you said you can hear stuff in the computer but the harddrive led does
not light.
that suggest to me that the harddrve is very sick.

but you can try.. pressing the 'f' key just after you power up... depending
on brand.. its f1 or f3 or f8... to get into the factory restore routine.

what normally happens at power up..
the CMOS looks for the boot record. which is normally on the harddrive.
but will check the floppy drive first if there is a diskette in it.

this boot record then loads the basic test functions. and beeps if it
founds something wrong. different length beeps and number of beeps tell what
component is sick.

if you do not get any beeps.. and the harddrive just does not make any
sound... I suspect its the harddrive that is sick
if it were components or drivers on the mother board, you would get some
beeps at power up test.

on the repair side... if you open the case you need to be very very careful
with ESD. just touching any components can cause un-recoverable damage. ESD
is electrostatic discharge you can burn chips, and boards and cards,
simply by touch them... (unless you are properly grounded).

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Question for the Engineers

  Hi All,

I recently came across a problem that is forcing me to go to a professional
for help...Yeah, I know, I've used the dirty word...

  Anyway, my problem is this...

I think my motherboard is fried on my laptop, but I have no way of making
sure that it is or not. I mean, let's face it, there must be a hundred reasons
why a computer won't boot up. Suffice it to say, that the computer does get
power to it, I can here things running in the background, but the hard drive
stays put, and I don't here any sounds from it. My brother says he does not see
any lights emitting from the hard drive light, and at some point, the laptop
just sits there looking at me, like it's waiting for me to make the next move.

My brother thinks it might be the motherboard, or a controller on the
motherboard.

My question is, whether a person can check if the motherboard is working
properly or not, without actually having to rip it out of it's current location
and putting it into another computer, or laptop, as the case may be.

Can one check this sort of thing with a continuity tester to make sure all of
the connections are alright, or if it's fried, to check if there's a break in
the circuitry. This does not have to be done through a blind person, at this
point, I would accept help from a sighted stand point, if anything, just to
save me the expense of paying someone 50 to 60 bucks an hour to look at an
overgrown paper weight.

Anyway, your help would be much appreciated.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Building your own computer.

[BlindHandyMan] Tankless WaterHeaters the Good and the Bad

2006-09-08 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi
Tankless water heatersthe GOOD...and the BAD!

Tankless heaters have pros and cons, just like everything else. They can
supply an endless supply of hot water, and can save energy.

However, they are limited in the amount of hot water that can be produced at
one time and they are more expensive to purchase than a conventional storage
type water heater.

They also make it take longer for you to get your hot water, since they
don't start heating the water until you turn on the faucet. This problem
can be
solved by using a specialized pump, which in combination with the tankless
unit can get your hot water to you at less than half the time it would take
running the faucet full blast.

The tankless water heaters also cause an increase in water wastage since you
have to let the water run longer to get your hot water. This problem is also
solved when using the specialized pumping system. Water conservation is an
important advantage to the pumping system. One such system is the
Chilipepper hot water pump.
With it you get both water conservation and convenience benefits of faster
hot water, and, an un-limited amount of hot water.

Tankless hot water heaters save energy and thus money. Water heating
accounts for 20% or more of an average household's annual energy
expenditures. The
yearly operating costs for conventional gas or electric storage tank water
heaters average $200 or $450, respectively.

Storage tank-type water heaters raise and maintain the water temperature to
the temperature setting on the tank (usually between 120° -140° F (49° -60°
C). Even if no hot water is drawn from the tank (and cold water enters the
tank), the heater will operate periodically to maintain the water
temperature.

This is due to standby losses: the heat conducted and radiated from the
walls of the tank-and in gas-fired water heaters-through the flue pipe.
These
standby losses represent 10% to 20% of a household's annual water heating
costs.

Tankless units are common in Japan and Europe. They began appearing in the
United States about 30 years ago. Unlike conventional storage tank water
heaters,
tankless water heaters heat water only as it is used, or on demand. A
tankless hot water heater has a heating device that is activated by the flow
of water
when a hot water valve is opened. Once activated, the heater delivers a
constant supply of hot water. The output, however, limits the rate of the
heated
water flow.

Selecting a Tankless Water Heater

Select a based on the maximum amount of hot water to meet your peak demand.
Use the following assumptions on water flow for various appliances to find
the
size of unit that is right for your purposes:

Faucets: 0.75 gallons (2.84 liters) to 2.5 gallons (9.46 liters) per minute.

Low-flow showerheads: 1.2 gallons (4.54 liters) to 2 gallons (7.57 liters)
per minute.

Older standard shower heads: 2.5 gallons (9.46 liters) to 3.5 gallons (13.25
liters) per minute.

Clothes washers and dishwashers: 1 gallon (3.79 liters) to 2 gallons (7.57
liters) per minute.

Unless you know otherwise, assume that the incoming potable water
temperature is 50° F (10° C). You will want your water heated to 120° F (49°
C) for most
uses, or 140° F (60° C) for dishwashers without internal heaters. To
determine how much of a temperature rise your need, subtract the incoming
water temperature
from the desired output temperature. In this example, the needed rise is 70°
F (39° C).

List the number of hot water devices you expect to have open at any one
time, and add up their flow rates. This is the desired flow rate for the
water heater.
Select a manufacturer that makes such a unit. Most tankless hot water
heaters are rated for a variety of inlet water temperatures. Choose the
model that
is closest to your needs.

As an example, assume the following conditions: One hot water faucet open
with a flow rate of 0.75 gallons (2.84 liters) per minute. One person
bathing
using a shower head with a flow rate of 2.5 gallons (9.46 liters) per
minute. Add the two flow rates together. If the inlet water temperature is
50° F
(10° C), the needed flow rate through the heater would need to be no greater
than 3.25 gallons (12.3 liters) per minute. Faster flow rates or cooler
inlet
temperatures will reduce the water temperature at the most distant faucet.
Using low-flow showerheads and water-conserving faucets are a good idea.

Some types are thermostatically controlled. They can vary their output
temperature according to the water flow rate and the inlet water
temperature. This
is useful when using a solar water heater for preheating the inlet water.
If, using the above example, you connect this same tankless water heater to
the
outlet of a solar system, it only has to raise the water temperature a few
degrees more, if at all, depending on the amount of solar gain that day.

Gas and electric
models.

Recently, Teresa and I attempted to revive her laptop with a bit of
surgery. There are a lot of screws, a lot of plastic clips, and
everything is quite tiny. There isn't a lot to see in there, mostly just
 looks like a mother board.

We attempted to fix a fan / heat sink issue. On this particular model the
heat sink actually moved back and forth like a thermostat. As things
heated up, the heat sink would move and contact a switch that would then
turn on the fans. We picked up new fans and a new heat sink assembly, but
unfortunately, neither part came with the switch which is what I believe
 is wrong with the thing.

There were ribbon cable connectors for the keyboard and monitor. I was
impressed by just how thin and small all the components were. The
keyboard is nothing more than a thick piece of Aluminum foil. the fans
were about 1.25 inches in diameter and about 0.25 inches thick.

We actually managed to take the thing apart and put it back together twice
but it was still overheating as the fan would never kick on so after about
ten minutes of use it would die again.

Anyway, just thought I'd toss that out since Dale was wondering what the
inside of a laptop might look like.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question for the Engineers

2006-09-08 Thread Max Robinson
All other things being equal I would think it would be the same but measured
perpendicular to the ground rather than the true vertical. Of course, all
other things are seldom equal. Probably the main issue is snow cover. A
thick blanket of snow acts as an insulator and the frost line underneath it
will actually be shallower than it would be in a place such as the top of a
hill that may be swept clean of snow by the wind.

I have a stupid question for the engineers. about a frost level in the
ground. if you have a steep side hill, would the frost be as deep on
that hill as it would be on the top or bottomm level ground?Lee

Re: [BlindHandyMan] looking for specs for a zig zag wheelchair ramp

2006-09-08 Thread Tom Fowle
Lee,
the official government ada specifications site is probably that
of the Architecture and Transportation barriers compliance board:
http://www.atbcb.gov

I have a friend who is a chief building inspector in S.F. and
specializes in accessibility, I'll ask him for the best source
and get back to you.

Have any of you seen the floating ramps they now do for accesible
floating docks at marinas? they're huge, expensive and
spectacular, and everybody loves them like when hauling a few
hundred pounds of mainsail up from the boat.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question for the Engineers

2006-09-08 Thread Dale Leavens
Probably the frost would be deeper on the lower ground since cold air is
heavier and tends to settle in the lower areas. Further, the lower ground is
likely to be damper and this would conduct the temperature more readily.

There are other factors though, things like vegetation, nature of the soil,
it's density and so on, the amount of any snow cover, the direction of the
hillside and even direction of prevailing winds and weather.

My answer therefore is a very definite maybe.

Thanks Ray, I'll share this and other suggested sites with a brother who
will be the main carppenter for this big project. this zig zag ramp
needs to go up a bank about 45 feet so the job will be a major
undertaking. this ramp will lead to a side walk and from there is
another 4 stairs which will be ramped differently. again, thanks to all

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Talking Multimeter source

2006-09-08 Thread Jay Williams
Just got one of these multimeters. Wow! what a deal for $35. It speaks
everything, clear voice, slower than many might like, but not draggy. As
with many, the test leads end in point-probes rather than clips, but they
and everything about the meter is solid including the connections of the
leads to the meter. The plus lead has a talk button on it, and the talk
button on the meter itself can be locked so it reads continuously. Of
course, as with any talking meter, you don't wanna use this for critical
dynamic metering, but its static metering is just fine. The capacitance
seems to be accurate, but doesn't go into ranges beyond 5 uf, I think. The
instruction book is eminently scanable. Beyond this, I don't think a
detailed review is needed here. Rest assured that this is one useful and
convenient thingy, and you don't need a compooder to make it useful.

[BlindHandyMan] house flies

2006-09-08 Thread Jennifer Jackson
So what do you all do to get rid of house flies? They are nasty and my kids
are not really focused enough to turn them loose with swatters. *smile* They
would be far more likely to hit me or each other than to ever kill a fly.
Seriously though, they, the flies not my kids, are a real nuisance and they
make such a bad impression on my guests.

Jennifer
