[BlindHandyMan] Spring Clean Up.

2007-03-22 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi Everyone
Nearly Time for That Spring Clean Up.
DECKS: Any rotted or split pieces should be replaced. Remember for wood
decking put the bark to the weather. That means if you look on the end
grain it
will resemble a frown. That way when the board dry's out it will cup with
the center higher and the water will have a tendancy to roll off. Then use a
deck wash, rinse, (. Directions). Let dry, then seal with a water repellent,
deck sealer, preservative or paint as desired. Don't forget to bang
in any popped nails first.

GUTTERS: Now is the time to get up there and clean those gutters. Also fix
any missing or damaged downspouts. Install a downspout screen into the hole
in
the gutter, this will keep things from getting clogged again later.
LAWN: Early spring is the time to get started taking care of your lawn. Get
your lawn mower sharpened, oil changed and ready to go. When the soil is
firm
enough to walk on it without leaving footprints, (usually April or so) clear
the branches left by winter storms. Rake the grass if it is matted from the
snow. You may have to de-thatch. Seed any bare spots that you forgot last
fall. Then apply a pre-emergent weed control agent for crabgrass and annual
weeds.
Apply fertilizer in late April or early May. If sod is needed May is the
time! Remember, have fun in the sun, its been a long winter.
FINALLY at last, the weather is warming up. Its time to go outside and take
care of business. Look around, see if everything looks OK. Check your fences
and gates. If they are in need of repairs, now is the time.
FENCE: If your fence is wood and is not redwood, cypress, cedar or pressure
treated, all the parts should be protected against insects and rot with
either
a preservative or paint. If any parts are already rotted or broken, replace
them first. Wire brush the bad areas then preserve or paint.

GATES: If you have a gate that sags, first check to see if the hinges are
secured to both the gate and the post. If not, remove the screws, put a few
toothpicks
into the holes (with some exterior glue) and put the screws back in. Do the
same with the latch hardware while your there. If the gate still sags then
its time for more drastic measures. You can either a) get a kit at the local
home center for sagging gates which has a steel cable, turnbuckle, and some
corner brackets or you can just use a 1 x 4 piece of wood attached at the
bottom corner on the hinge side (the side with out the pickets of course!),
to
the opposite corner at the top of the gate. Make sure you use weather
resistant hardware and hold the gate how you want it before you screw the
second
corner!

[BlindHandyMan] Fixing a Chair with a Loose Cross Rung

2007-03-22 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi All
Q. I have a chair that has a loose cross rung and it needs to be re-glued. I
have heard that there is a new glue called Gorilla Glue.

Is it used for this? Will it hold?

I think Gorilla Glue is an excellent choice for putingg your chair back into
shape!

Gorilla Glue is a polyurethane glue especially designed just for wood. Its
features are:
1) It's solvent free
2) It's 100% water proof
3) It has a twenty minute open working time, which is much longer than most
polyurethane adhesives. This means you have more time to fuss with clamps
etc.
4) It works great on end grain
5) It works on oily exotic woods such as teak.

Gorilla Glue needs to be clamped to adhere, so it works best on joints and
flat surfaces. It is an extremely sticky glue, that expands with moisture,
and
if not used carefully can get pretty messy. Most carpenter wood glues Like
Titebond, clean up with water. Gorrila Glue doesn't. It does clean up with
denatured
alcohol and some other solvents, but it is toxic to touch and ingest so I do
not recommend for children use it.

I should also point out that if the cross member that is coming out is a
very loose fit, then there is no glue that will hold well. There are a
number of
ways to repair this too.

In all cases below, lightly sand the hole or dowel if it is the original to
get off any old glue. Glue works best when it is clamped, so if you have a
clamp
use it, or tie some sash cord around the 4 legs. Then tie a piece from the
center between the legs across to the other side. This will clamp the legs
until
the glue dries! Remember to wipe off excess glue while wet!

1) If the cross member is over 3/4 in diameter, you could carefully cut off
the doweled end and drill it out to the next larger size. Then drill out the
leg to the same size. Cut a piece of hardwood dowel to fit and glue away.

2) You could drill out the leg hole to fit a hardwood dowel and then
re-drill it again after the glue has dries to fit the existing cross member.

3) If the cross member has only just come out of the hole and is not loose,
just pull it out as far as you can and squirt some carpenters glue in.

You need to look at the broken or loose part and make that big decision.
What you think will work the best with the equipment you have available to
you.

Could he fill the hole with a sawdust and glue mixture and then cover the
dowel with glue and shove it in?

Nope.
The mixture of sawdust and glue will prevent the end of the cross member
from going in all the way. It will bunch up at the bottom of the hole and
then
will stop the 'shoveing in' part!

If it is only a little loose then the Gorilla Glue will work OK because it
expands slightly and will take up some of the space. BUT it will need to be
clamped
remember... or it may push the parts apart!

I have used Gorilla-Glue before and boy does it hold awesome!

Got to watch out for the squeeze out though.

I have also used Polyurethane caulk for larger projects. It is the strongest
adhesive I have EVER used!

Gorilla glue is perfect for fixing loose rungs. Make sure to remove as much
of the old glue as possible. After you've applied the glue and stuck the
rung back in, place a rope around two outside legs and make a tourniquet
with a stick or something so you can tie it off. Leave it set up like this
for a least 24 hours.

[BlindHandyMan] sweater drying rack repair

2007-03-22 Thread Lenny McHugh
Hi Listers,
My daughter has a sweater drying rack that one of the dowel rods broke. This
unit is collapsible and has a total of 11 20 inch dowel rods for it's drying
racks.
One of the 3/8 inch rods broke in the middle. This particular rod is the main
one that holds the unit together when erected.
I first was going to try and replace the rod but the one in place is glued and
brad nailed. I think I would do more damage to the unit trying to remove it.
Right now I see only two choices for repairing this thing. The first would be
to drill through the end of the rod and the nail to remove . This would have
to be done at each end. The new rod would have to thread completely through
one side. there is not enough play to insert one end at a time.
Now my other choice would be to take a short piece of oak about 1/2 inch
square. Round over the corners and drill a 7/16 inch hole through the length.
Then slide it over the broken dowel rodglue the rod together and add more
glue and slide the oak sleeve over the break.
Any suggestions?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] extension cords

2007-03-22 Thread Trouble
Would put the 12 then the 14, because when connected. the cord closer
to the plug will get hot. This will disperse some of the heat. If
what you got to do ain't that long of a job. Then this will work, but
if going to be a long one. Then just go buy a 12 gage cord long
enough to do the job.

At 10:10 AM 3/21/2007, you wrote:

Here is a question for you guys. Well if a guy had two extension

Re: [BlindHandyMan] sweater drying rack repair

2007-03-22 Thread Dale Leavens
Hi Lenny,

Are you sure you don't have enough room to slip a new dowel into place?

Remember that once one end is inserted you only need to distort the
arrangement about half the thickness of one end framing member to slide it
into the hole at that end. that is probably a deflection of probably 3/8ths
of an inch or maybe less..

Forming a sleeve would work too of course.

One problem is that the darn things come into North America for only a few
bucks in the first place so it isn't worth too much effort. That is a shame
in a way, they are nice bits of material and should be preserved.

inlarged slightly, the one end of the dowel could be sanded down extra, glued,
braded, or split end with a shim would all be
possible...bob

Re: [BlindHandyMan] sweater drying rack repair

2007-03-22 Thread Lenny McHugh
Hi Dale,
I just made a sleeve. I will let her look at it before I glue. There is no
way to deflect it for insertion of a new rod. there are two existing rods
in place . One at the hinged end and the second in the middle about 3 inches
away. The one that broke is the one that has the locking ends.
I know that they are not expensive to replace and that is my third choice.
It just might end up in my friends camping firewood box. That is what would
be left after I salvaged the remaining rods for some unknown future project.
I sure hope that you are feeling a little better.

 Hi Listers,
My daughter has a sweater drying rack that one of the dowel rods broke.
This unit is collapsible and has a total of 11 20 inch dowel rods for
 it's drying racks.
One of the 3/8 inch rods broke in the middle. This particular rod is the
main one that holds the unit together when erected.
I first was going to try and replace the rod but the one in place is glued
and brad nailed. I think I would do more damage to the unit trying to
 remove it.
Right now I see only two choices for repairing this thing. The first would
be to drill through the end of the rod and the nail to remove . This
would have to be done at each end. The new rod would have to thread
completely through one side. there is not enough play to insert one end
 at a time.
Now my other choice would be to take a short piece of oak about 1/2 inch
square. Round over the corners and drill a 7/16 inch hole through the
length. Then slide it over the broken dowel rodglue the rod together
and add more glue and slide the oak sleeve over the break.
 Any suggestions?

Roundup becomes inert almost immediately on application. It doesn't poison
the soil. It cannot be used to sterilize soil, seeds germinate and come
right up following application of Roundup.

To work it must come in contact with green living vegetation.

Salt and oil and other agents, probably not bleach which will bubble off the
chlorine fairly quickly but certainly the other agents do persist in the
soil and migrate to other areas too.

You can use Roundup directly to selectively kill individual plants. Brush
some onto a particularly noxious weed among your beauties and it alone will
die. You might like to put a cotton glove over a rubber glove and wet a
couple of fingers in Roundup then stroke those plants you want to die. It
doesn't even have to touch the soil.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Off balance upright washer

2007-03-22 Thread Dale Leavens
Hi David,

Can you cause the washer to rock by hand? That is, shift it from or too one
short leg as happens with a chair when there is something under one leg? If
so then adjustment will help. The rear legs are most likely self leveling so
it is only the front ones but if it doesn't rock then it is essentially
level, one side may be a little lower than the other or the front may be a
little higher or lower than the rear but so long as all four feet touch that
is not your mean problem.

It is more likely that one of the top drum supports is broken or otherwise
come free. This happened to ours a couple of years ago. It is a little
different to what I had seen before, there are three or four I just forget
now and I am not hobbling up to see, but three or four bungee like
rubberized straps on mine which bridge the gap between the top frame of the
washer and the tub. The tub and motor and transmission are suspended on rods
on bearings from the top frame which allows the drum to swing a little. In
my case one of the rubberized straps broke so it wasn't damping the
vibration efficiently.

You could probably do the repair yourself if you can get the part. The
methods vary a little for lifting the cabinet top but usually there are
clips near the corners under the top which you can press in with a putty
knife to release. These just clip over the edge of the top where it curls
under over the front panel. They can be easier to release by pulling the top
panel along with the rear console forward. This is much like raising the top
of a kitchen range.

Push the clips in and the top hinges at the rear. The tub lid may begin
flapping about so be careful. There are also likely a pair of wires to the
switch which disables the spinner when you lift the lid so you would be wise
to locate them not to damage them and disconnect the power before opening
the machine.

Get something to prop the top up and you will locate those straps if that is
the method used. The straps are held with bolts so there is no rocket
science in that.

If you want to check beside the tub you can remove the usually plastic cap,
something like a flat hoop I suppose. There are clips at intervals around it
which are easily sprung off and lost under the machine. The filler hose is
probably attached to that device too but it will let you fish down between
the basket and the outer drum. Finding things in there can be tough though
as it will get down under the bottom of the basket, you can maybe fish with
a bit of a wire but be careful, there is probably a rubber gasket and you
don't want to poke holes in it.

Hope this is helpful.

It sounds like you own Monsanto stock. The landfills here which once
charged for their compost, now have to give it away, with the proviso to add
plenty of dirt to the compost because of the presence of Roundup in the
compost. If you're going to use Roundup, you may as well use vinegar.

Pouring vinegar onto a plant will kill the leaves but it is not effective
  in
killing the roots. Adding orange oil extract to the vinegar will make it a
more potent leaf killer. Adding salt to the soil is more effective at
killing the roots. Smothering the weed under plastic or five sheets of
newspaper is effective and does not poison the soil. Pouring boiling water
onto a weed will harm the root hairs and the weed will wither but not
necessarily kill it. By its very content, Roundup is a poison and you are
poisoning your soil by applying it.

I have been told that bleach is effective but I have no direct knowledge
  of
  this.

[BlindHandyMan] What Is The Best Sharpening Stones To Use.

2007-03-22 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi All
Q I need to sharpen a couple of tools like plane blades and chisels. What
should I use to do this?

A grinding wheel is very tempting but use only as a last resort to remove
big chips or nicks that can't be taken out with a hand stone.

At the time of purchase, the chisel blade will be protected by a thin coat
of lacquer, wwhich has been applied by the manufacturer to prevent the
chisel
from rusting before it's sold. This lacquer must be removed prior to
sharpening the chisel, or it will clog up your sharpening stone. To remove
the lacquer,
dampen a cloth will lacquer thinner and rub it firmly over the entire
surface of the blade.

Sharpening stones will generally have a two-color composition -- the light
color usually represents the fine- grit side, while the dark-colored side is
composed of a coarse grit.

Before using your sharpening stone, you'll need to apply a fine oil to the
stone's surface. Some stones use water instead of oil so read the directions
that come with the stone. This will prevent the small filings from becoming
embedded in the stone and damaging the grit. Once you've applied a bit of
oil,
rub the face of the chisel in a circular motion on the oiled area of the
stone's coarse, dark- colored side. This will ensure that the face is
perfectly
flat; most chisels have a slightly uneven face when they're shipped from the
factory.

Next, you'll need to sharpen the bevel. To do this, simply apply a small
portion of oil to the fine-grit (light-colored) side of the stone and rub
the bevel
against the stone in a circular motion. There are jigs that hold the chisel
at the required angle as you slide it over the stone. See list below.

Here are some manufacturers of sharpening stones and jigs:

NORTON water stones
Arkansas Stones - uses oil
Arkansas Combination Stones - different grits on each side
DMT DuoSharp DuoSharp Plus Diamond Stones
EZE-LAP DS Diamond Stones
Black Arkansas Stones - extra fine for final honing
Japanese Water Slipstones - for small or irregular shaped chisels
General Chisel and Plane Blade Sharpening Guide
Wolverine Flat Tool Sharpening Honing Jig

Re: [BlindHandyMan] fence grass

2007-03-22 Thread Dale Leavens
Fertilizer is a very different thing. It is intended to persist in the soil.
Some is prized for it's long term qualities.

The problem with it is that it gets into streams or ponds and becomes easily
available to algae and other plants which choke out life and oxygen from
those water ways.

[BlindHandyMan] sweater rack repaired

2007-03-22 Thread Lenny McHugh
Hi all,
The quickest way that I figured was to make the sleeve. I took a 2 1/2 x 1/2
scrap piece of oak and drilled a hole through it. Then on the sander rounded
the corners and tapered the ends . Since the break was nearly straight across
almost looked like it was cut I put a little glue to hold them together. then
smeared more glue around both sides of the break and slid the sleeve over the
break. In a few minutes the glue started to set up.
My daughter just came home from work and is very pleased with the repair.
It probably took about 45 minutes to repair the rack.
I spent a little time trying to remove the brads but that was hopeless.
You can purchase a new rack for about $10.00 or less. It was an interesting
project. Thanks to you guys had a lot of ideas.

[BlindHandyMan] speakers are installed.

2007-03-22 Thread Robert J. Moore
I installed the back speakers in my pick up today and it all turned out
good.
To differenciate between the 2 wires I held the clip with the cutout part
away from me and cut the left wire then I tied that wire in a loop and did
the same on the other side and when I attached the wires I put the wire with
the larger tab on the wire that I had looped
And put the other wire with the wire that I had not looped.

After I had cut the other wire off of the clip of cource.
Hope this makes sence. I did not have a wire stripper so I had to use a wire
cutter and very carefully cut through the casing without cutting the wire
itself. That can be a challenge.
By the way, what should I look for when shopping for a wire stripper?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] speakers are installed.

2007-03-22 Thread Tom Fowle
There is a heavy contraversy around here about strippers.

There are automatic ones from cheap tool places that have blades into which
you put the wire and which claim to adjust to many;sizes.
Some of them have a set of grippers on each half of the two ends of the
flat plier like handles. You put the wire between these sets of sharpish
grippers, holding it at right angles to the length of the plier like tool.

As you squeeze the handles, the two sets of grippers grab ehe wire, and one
cuts the insulation. As you squeeze further, the grippers pull apart
and hopefully remove just the insulation you wanted, not any strands of wire.

These, and other 'automatic' strippers can pinch fingers if you leave your
little
prescious haptors in the wrong places, but when you're used to them,
some of them work pretty well.
The more plastic on them the poorer they are.

Many real technicians preferr the old fashioned type that have a bolt that you
move to allow the things to close just so far depending on what size
of wire you are stripping. If you get these adjusted properly they do well.

The kind you find in hardware stores that are a plier like tool that strips
crimps, cuts, and cuts bolts are junk and are only for the
coarsest type of work. If you're only stripping #14 solid wire, they might do.

I most often use a sharp knife, being very carefull not to cut strands
especially when stripping small stranded wire.

Radio shlock probably has a variety including the fancy automatic ones like
I first discribed.

I've never found anything that does a consistantly good job on lots of wire
sizes.

My brother, who is a retired electrician, always uses a sharp knife,
and he is so fast I can't even think about stripping before he has it done.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] fence grass

2007-03-22 Thread Jewel Blanch
Honestly, I don't give a damn as to whether Monsanto turns a buck this year or
not, so my remarks on Roundup are not prompted by financial considerations.
Roundup and other generic brands of its ilk, are herbicides in the true sense
of the word in that their effects are restricted to vegetative material alone.
The poison is neutralized upon contact with the soil, so the soil and its fauna
are left unharmed.

[BlindHandyMan] My Favourite Wire Stripper

2007-03-22 Thread Victor Gouveia
And before everyone goes thinking I'm going to talk about a buxom blonde or
fiery redhead, don't go there.

Seriously though, My father and I have always used a utility knife to strip
wire.

We would lay the wire to be stripped across our thumb in a cross pattern,
then put the knife of the blade parallel to our thumb.

This would allow for a more proper gauge of how much housing we were cutting
off the wire and how deep we needed to go.

I know, it wasn't the most safest way of stripping wire, but it was fast and
pretty accurate and does what you need in a pinch.

I've never cut myself, and the biggest problem I've ever had was with
telephone wire and it's minute housing.

I had to do those with my teeth, but the utility knife worked out with every
other wire I ever had to strip.

Victor

RE: [BlindHandyMan] My Favourite Wire Stripper

2007-03-22 Thread Robert J. Moore

I have also used a knife for this task and yes it does work pretty well
until you are following a speaker wire on a home system and some how end up
with the hot cord of your wifes favorite lamp in your hands and end up
cutting that instead.

[BlindHandyMan] Fw: Shows this week.

2007-03-22 Thread Don

- Original Message -
From: Phil Parr

Well, we stumbled thru another blind handyman show Tuesday afternoon. Only
ones in attendance were my self and Don Shaw. Tom had chair and car problems
and so, Don pat didn't have a ride. It was a beautiful day and I expected a
quorum but it was not to be. We had Don and Tom on the phone and it all worked
out fine. Our guest was Mark Due from ST Louis and he talked about his rent
houses and the large deck He just finished.
Blind like me was a two fir or maybe even a three fir. The first thirty
minutes was taken up with an interview Carla Thompson and I did a while back
with Tiffanies Black. Tiffany's clame to fame is, She makes soaps and body oils
from scratch. Second half was with our old friend Bob Bartlet from Houston. Bob
talked about a job training session the Houston lighthouse is having on April
28.
Hope you enjoy the shows and, any and all feedback will be appreciated.
Now here are links to listen or just download both shows.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] speakers are installed.

2007-03-22 Thread spiro
I agree with Tom.
I use either single edged razor blade for thin stranded wire feeling when
the blade just meets metal; or I use a rather expensive locking folding
knife. I choose a blade 2 or 3 inches at most. I like the ones where it's
a skeleton frame and a little bolt that you press with your thumb and the
blade pivots forward. I also like when it is a single side to sharpen
instead of having to work both sides to sharpen.
Short of that, the smaller blade, 2 inch, on the Swiss Army knives is
nice.

I may have to make many cutsand some are on 24g stranded. So losing
strands is a large percentage of the whole. Or if it is a plated wire;
such as silver plated copper, or the vastly greater gold plated silver, a
well balanced locking blade can keep me from chopping the metal.
I hardly ever fold them, just stick them to a large magnet mear my bench
clamp.

On Thu, 22 Mar 2007, Tom Fowle wrote:

If you're only stripping #14 solid wire, they might
 do.

 Tom

Re: [BlindHandyMan] My Favourite Wire Stripper

2007-03-22 Thread spiro
the funny thing about telephone wire, as sold as telephone wire, is that
the conductors are often metal impregnated nylon. So when trying to feel
the difference between the jacket and the conductor... you could easily
miss a few microns of copper or aluminum, or carbon dust bonded onto the
surface of the filament while it cools; cutting through plastic till you
find you're all the way through, wondering where the metal was hiding.
. I gave up on that, I still insist
I want bell wire when I do new phone jacks. I have to make up for that
inability.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] fence grass

2007-03-22 Thread Max Robinson
I used roundup to kill grass in my gravel drive way and around the air
conditioner. This spring there is a new crop of pretty green grass around
the air conditioner, exactly where I don't want it. More roundup will do it
in, but the way the grass keeps coming back in places where I have sprayed I
think Dale is right that it doesn't persist in the soil. I believe in
acting green but lets keep our facts straight or we will destroy our
credibility.

Regards.

Pouring vinegar onto a plant will kill the leaves but it is not effective
 in
killing the roots. Adding orange oil extract to the vinegar will make it
 a
more potent leaf killer. Adding salt to the soil is more effective at
killing the roots. Smothering the weed under plastic or five sheets of
newspaper is effective and does not poison the soil. Pouring boiling
 water
onto a weed will harm the root hairs and the weed will wither but not
necessarily kill it. By its very content, Roundup is a poison and you are
poisoning your soil by applying it.

I have been told that bleach is effective but I have no direct knowledge
 of
  this.
