[BlindHandyMan] Removing Splash Back Tiles

2007-04-19 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi Everyone

On Saturday I have to remove 119 Ceramic Tiles which have been glued to
Sheet Rock any suggestions of how to remove them without damaging the Sheet
rock to much.
These are on our splash back the tiles are going to be dumped.
What tool do you use for prizing them off without punching holes in the
sheet rock
Any suggestions will be welcome.

Ray,

I have removed them with a wide putty knife, without much damage. In places
where it is hard to get the knife in, I would gently break out one of the tiles.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Removing Splash Back Tiles

2007-04-19 Thread Joe
Ray,

I used a cheap 4 putty knife. Put the knife flat against the wall
on top of the tile and tapped it with a hammer. Worked very well,
sometimes taking the top layer of paper off the sheetrock, but in no
instance did it damage the sheetrock to the point it needed
patching. All the glue seemed to stay on the tile. Only problem is
the limited working distance between the top of the knife handle and
the bottom of the wall cabinets.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Removing Splash Back Tiles

2007-04-19 Thread Breeze
Hi Ray;
i just use a flat pry bar and tap it flat against the wall against
the tile. The bar wont break the wall, but the tile may pull a little. I
did my kitchen when I moved into this house and the entire 11 by 20 foot
kitchen was floor to ceiling tile. A friend walked into to it for the
first time and said wow, this is the biggest shower I ever saw!

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Removing Splash Back Tiles

2007-04-19 Thread Bill Gallik
Ray,

If it were me I would just remove the underlying sheet rock as well. It
would be much less complicated and odds are you won't be able to remove the
tiles without damaging the sheet rock anyway. It isn't that hard to replace
sheet rock so you'd be ahead in the long run. And possibly you could
replace the existing sheet rock with something better for the application
such as concrete sheeting or at least water resistant sheet rock (green
board).

That's my suggestion for what it's worth!

Just an associated question,

I have never found it very effective or efficient to try to follow lines or
drawings or score marks with a saw. If deeply enough etched I can generally
get the tip of a chisel accurately into it but otherwise, following with a
saw and even planing down to it once really close I loose it in the natural
grain. Following a scribe with a jig saw or scroll saw, can some of you
really do that?

if you go really slowly, and don't mind go really slowly, you can give the
saber saw little bursts, and keep checking and checking and do it. But
that's an afternoon that requires at least a beer or two with dinner
after.
It doesn't hurt to set the speed of the saber saw low either..
additional advice, set the front guard of the machine as close to the
blade as possible for slightly longer power on states.

Rapidly ta ta ta tapping a rather think chisel around could do it if the
work isn't thick.
Less nerve racking that way.
I'd start off that way as well to make the line really distinct after the
scribe line is complete.

Never before has there been such an awesome raised drawing system
available to the blind. Now, blind kids can draw pictures to their hearts'
content; and, in seconds, parents and teachers can produce tactile diagrams
of formerly visual concepts. Perhaps best of all, you don't need any
specialized, expensive plastic sheets or writing instruments to do it - thin
copy paper or even thick Braille paper will work nicely!

  Measures about 11 L, 10 W, .5 H.

Well what is nice about this raise drawing is the lines are raise so you can
feel them on the paper so what I did is taped the paper to the board and
with my small scroll saw I can follow the line. The scroll saw is a real
small table type. Also with this small scroll saw I can actually touch the
blade and will not get cut.

if you go really slowly, and don't mind go really slowly, you can give the
saber saw little bursts, and keep checking and checking and do it. But
that's an afternoon that requires at least a beer or two with dinner

Re: [BlindHandyMan] to fret or to fretless

2007-04-19 Thread Tom Fowle
Scott,
I don't think I'd try the wood powder and glue mix as a bat, it's likely
you'll get it all over everything, I know I would GRIN

I don't know about frett pullers, but if they're as I think they might be,
they're strips of a contrasting material probably not as deep as
the board that are glued into slits in the board. If they used hyde glue
as they should have, then it'll break before the wood does and they'll be
removable with a sharp chisel tap under the end. This chisel
being exactly the width of the frett or maybe just a tiny bit smaller.

If they were glued in with white glue, then a few drops of white vinegar dripped
carefully onto the end of the joint may help soften the white
glue so you can break the joint.

It'll take great care but the finger board should be a pretty
healthy chunk of stuff so you're not very likely to bust it up.

Good luck
Tom

Phil,
I hope you're wrong, because they can still, sometimes, occasionally, perhaps

but it's fowle's first rule of

only matters that you can sell it.

Well, I guess I gotta go out and buy some crayons and try this out. Wait, we

..Never before has there been such an awesome raised drawing system

Well Mates now that you're all ID'd
the ID Mate is a bar code reader with an attached box that records, on flash
memory cards, whatever you want and relates it to each bar code you show it.

So you can either read existing codes on products, or put lables
they sell on stuff and record names instructions etc.
for each and then identify them again.

Originally sold for well over a thousand bucks.

Probably being replaced with computer based systems for less that come
with huge product databases like BarCodeSolutions Scan and Say.

2007-04-19 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Rob,

I know what a scroll saw is and what it looks like, I've just never been
partial to putting my finger anywhere near a moving blade, jigsaw or
otherwise.

I've heard horror stories of people getting their fingers too close to one
of those blades while chopping up meat at the local grocery store, and
people end up getting fingers along with the cuts of meat they buy.

Like I said, I just get weary of my fingers going anywhere near a moving
blade.

Oh, and by the way, I also had a hard time explaining what a scroll saw was
to a friend of mine here, and heck, if it wasn't just as difficult to
explain as nuclear fission, but I think I can explain nuclear fission a lot
easier than I could a scroll saw. Grin.

2007-04-19 Thread Richard Sherman
Hi,
I hope this thread is not too far off topic.

I have an ID Mate and is useful once it is set up. I did not know about the
scan and say product which can be found at

http://www.barcode-solutions.com/scanandsay.html

I really like what I have just read about this product.

Well Mates now that you're all ID'd
the ID Mate is a bar code reader with an attached box that records, on
flash
memory cards, whatever you want and relates it to each bar code you show
it.

Tom, thanks, they actually do make fret pullers and if I were going
to use some powdered material, I'd rap the hell out of the areas I
don't want the stuff on. Oh yeah, great care will be taken, no
rushing at all.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm nuts, but well the worst thing is I'd

[BlindHandyMan] 2002 Buick Century TRAC OFF light?

2007-04-19 Thread NLG
Today I changed the front left hub assembly I.E. wheel bearing on a 2002
Buick Century. I wasn't sure which wheel bearing was bad so I jacked up the
front of the car and blocked it so that both wheels were off the garage
floor. I then had someone start the car and put it in drive, and accelerate
to around 50 MPH . The left wheel was noisier than the right one, so I
removed the old left side hub assembly containing the wheel bearing and
replaced it with a new one. This did fix the wheel bearing noise, it is
gone. However, now the TRAC OFF light on the dash is lit and stays on while
the key is on and when the car is being driven down the road. How do I turn
the light out? I double checked the wheel sensor and it is plugged in. I
hooked up an OBD II scanner but for some reason it wouldn't communicate with
the ECM so I couldn't pull any codes. I disconnected the positive cable from
the battery for 10 minutes and reattached it. The light was out when I
turned the key to the on position and stayed out when the car was started
but came back on in 500 feet of travel down the street.

The only thing I can think of to do is to try pulling the codes again. This
OBD II code reader is fairly new to me. I only used it once before and that
was on a 2000 F150 4x4. The truck had a miss. I plugged the scan tool into
the port beneath the dash, turned the key to the on possession without
starting the truck and then turned the scan tool on. The scan tool gave me
a P0301 code. I changed the coil on plug and the miss was gone. When I
plugged the scan tool into the Buick, I used the same procedure as for the
F150 but for some reason, I got a message that the scanner could not
communicate. Does anyone know if the procedure for pulling codes is
different for a Ford verses a GM vehicle?

Any and all ideas will be appreciated :)

Thanks :)

2007-04-19 Thread Robert J. Moore
I had a problem with my 89 s10 and my mechanic was going to use some type of
gaget that he had to clear the fault code. He said oh ya that’s write with
this old of a truck I just need to unplug the battery for a couple of
minutes. I assume from that experience that the newer cars that you may have
to have it hooked up to some equipment at a garage for them to clear the
code. I would ask a reputable mechanic if this is the case.

[BlindHandyMan] Re: to fret or to fretless

2007-04-19 Thread Janet and Felix *
Hi. I don't post very often at all.

But on this topic, the luthier that Felix works with showed me how to fix a
chip in the wood that was on a guitar neck-- a little boo boo where a small
piece of wood had come out of the fretboard. Are you paying attention?
He said to me very sternly and sort of upset me a bit. But it served its
purpose-- to make me pay close attention.

He had a glass jar full of rosewood 'sawdust' I guess you could call it. He
had saved it from many many guitars he had worked on. He saved every last
granual of rosewood sawdust-- he never threw any away, ever. The he took
some superglue, yes, superglue and put a few drops into the hole, then some
rosewood dust, then more superglue, then more rosewood dust, and so on until
the hole was full. He then took some very fine sandpaper, 1500 grit, and
buffed it smooth.

And do you know what? When he was finished, you couldn't tell there was
ever a hole there. Smooth as a baby's butt and visually too, there was no
visual sign of the hole. (I am sighted.)

I was very impressed.

Then when we got home, Felix took some of the dust from the cardboard box he
had his guitar sitting in while he was leveling the fretboard and had me put
it into a baggie since we didn't have a nice big pickle jar handy like his
luthier had, and then he asked me to fix a few smaller cacks that really
only required one application of the superglue followed by one application
of the saved dust, of which we didn't have much of anyway, and then I buffed
it with 1500 grit sandpaper, and I too was able to smooth out some small
nicks.

Felix should have done it. Then he could describe it being done. But, it
was me instead of him, this time.

I'm only posting her today to describe my success in filling in holes in
rosewood guitar fingerboards.

Now, where does one find rosewood dust? The luthier saved his from leveling
and cutting fretslots on many, many rosewood fingerboards.

Felix and I think that if one knows where to get a piece of rosewood, it
would be easy enough to make rosewood sawdust from that. Maybe even fun,
too!

Best wishes,

Peace,
Jan

RE: [BlindHandyMan] I d mates.

2007-04-19 Thread Robert J. Moore
Well as far as the topic of this product being on topic for the blind handy
man. Hear are a couple of ideas.
This could be used to mark things in the shop such as paints, varnish,
stains, and other fluids that come in containers that may look similar but
have different contants. Some times I can't tell the difference between
motor oil and tranny fluid.
Another use could be for marking wires such as plug wires or if you are
working on a wire harness that has several wires that you need to keep track
of and you can't see the colors, you could mark them with tags that the unit
could read back to you once you have them marked.
Any other thoughts?

So is a jigsaw, and a sabersaw, and a scroll saw,

people end up getting fingers along with the cuts of meat they buy.

Like I said, I just get weary of my fingers going anywhere near a moving

[BlindHandyMan] saving parts from a Dodge Caravan.

2007-04-19 Thread Robert J. Moore
My friend has a Dodge Caravan at my place and he is going to scrap it. It is
about a 1990 or 91. I offered to take off a few parts that he could put up
in his garage for future use since he has other vans that are about the same
year and model.
Any thoughts on what I could save for him?
I am not going to go as far as pulling the motor or the tranny or the wire
harness. What I am thinking is parts like the starter, alternater, and maybe
the power stearing pump.
How about the coil pack
I want to salvage what I can for him but again I don't intend on this being
a major project.
Any thoughts are welkcome.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Emailing: Future Aids - Raised-Line DrawingBoard.htm

2007-04-19 Thread Dale Leavens
Thanks to all who responded to my inquiry about following tactile lines with
tools.

Truly we all do have varying talents and capabilities but that one is not
mine.

I did buy the long curve device from Lee Valley which I hope to be able to
use with blocking and either a collar or a template bit on a router to form
curves, one project I want to tackle maybe next winter is a roll top desk
for some of our computer equipment which we seem to use mostly at the dining
room table. As we use notebooks this appeals as an option to hide away
scanners, printers and even the computers and to have a brailler always
available near the kitchen telephone. I was puzzling as to how I might
design the curved runway for the roll top probably not a perfect arc, if I
can get close with this curve then improve it if necessary with a sander on
a piece of plywood or hardboard then I can reproduce as many as I want.

I was very interested to read about that ellipse jig in one of the magazines
too, I have wondered about how to do that long and hard.

I tend to be somewhat impatient, and it's possible I guess that I run my
