Re: [BlindHandyMan] list traffic

2007-05-12 Thread GenePoole
Well luckily for us, we had a winter with not a lot of rain. So mostly my
projects this weekend are gonna be to split wood for the back yard firepit
and set up the airconditioner out of retirement in the garage, rather than
lawn shoring and the like. I also somewhere in there have to start thinking
about ripping up the bakyard patio and repaving it, so I'll be consulting
the files page about that. What fun lol.

The Pod Cast address for the Cooking

Re: [BlindHandyMan] spring clean up and preparedness

2007-05-12 Thread Jennifer Jackson
I do not have a pool, but I heard a tip for setting one up. Borrow as many
water hoses as possible from neighbors and hook them together. Then you let
them absorb some heat from the sun and run the water through them to fill
the pool. Your water temp will start out much higher.

So do you guys with pools think this will work? I think the idea was to
save money and time heating all that water.

 Okay All,
Grab your hammers, crowbars, and tool belts.
We have a little project going on here.
I am getting ready to embark on building a 24 by 32 foot deck.
We had a patio cover installed by A Anthony Alum. Phil interviewed
him a year or so back after he installed our solar screens.
 He does patio covers too.
 To the deck.
I wanted to use this new composite decking.
It is made by many different companies.
Some use plastic, rice flour, and wood powder.
One brand, Choice, uses plastic and hardwood sawdust.
Bottom line, it is resistant to decay, termites, shrinkage and
expansion, and all those other things that will attach wood.
The negative thing is it has to be built, or laid, on regular wood.
The stuff doesn't have the strength to support much weight.

Kind of like putting bald tires on a new Porshe.
The decking comes in sizes from 12 to 20 feet, in 2 foot increments.
16 footers sell for 30 bucks a piece.

This job will require about 55 of them.

I was toying with the idea of still using the decking for the frame too.

A sixteen foot piece of treated lumber, 2 by 6, is about 10 bucks
 compared to 30.
It will last about 20 to 25 years.
That will make as old as Phil when it needs to be repaired.
Or we might not even live here by then!

Anyway, google composite decking for some interesting info.
Most companies sell railings, posts, and 2 by 4 supports for railings
around the deck. Again, all are in 42 inch lengths.

I will put some beer in the cooler, have a flask available for Mr.
Parr, and toss some ribs and maybe a brisket on the old smoker.
I have to tear up an old deck, move the planks to the attic for
flooring, and then start the new construction.
 Here we go...
 Dale

I can not tell you how to fix this problem but a few pointers on how to
 trouble shoot.
It will not ajetate with the lid open, this is a safety feature. In order
 to
tell if it is ajetating, there is always a safety switch. They are
 located
in one of two places. Either in the middle of the door at the back. If
 this
is the case you can wedge a key or some other small pointed object
 between
the door and the switch and then turn on the ajetater. You do not need to
put your hand down inside of the machine where you could get your hand
caught in the ajetater. Just put your hand on top of it and see if it is
 turning back and forth.
The other location for the switch could be under the lid in front, off to
one side or the other. You will find a small slot that has a switch in it
that a pin on the door depresses when the lid is put down, again push
 down
on the switch with a key or screw driver or some thing like that. One
 other
thing to try is to unplug the washer and feel under nieth to see if the
 belt
 is warn or broken.
Good luck Let us know how it turns out.

 robert

I have a Kenmore washing machine. I noticed that the agitator wasn't
working correctly, or maybe it is, I have no idea. The bottom of the
agitator seems like it agitates back and forth, and the top half don't
 do
anything. Without the top turning the clothes aren't being drawn in
 towards
the middle causing the clothes to circulate. Does anyone know if I can
 fix
this myself?? If so, give me some detailed instructions. Thanks

Mine will agitate with the door open, it will not spin dry if the door is
open. I can hold the top of the agitator real easy in the agitator mode.

If you are that bored I have not yet put in my garden. I am planning to do
that in the upt coming week or 2. You can come out and help me get my
 posts
and wireing set up for orientation. Also I cleaned up the garage but it
could still use more cleaning and organizing. If you are so inclined we
should be able to scare up some libation for when we are finished. I got
 the
fire ring all set up so we could cap it off with a raging camp fire and
 some
 bergers.

[BlindHandyMan] Making a Shorter Ladder

2007-05-12 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi All

We have been looking around for several weeks trying to buy a four foot
ladder for our Van, we need it to put up the annex .
The type we were after they do not make any more so I decided to cut down a
spare six foot aluminium ladder I had.
This will then fit into the boot of the Van out of the way when travelling.
This meant cutting off the main section the same angle as the stair treads
were so when the ladder is extended it sits flat, removing the rubber feet,
and drilling out the aluminium rivets and installing the rubber feet back in
the shortened version.
The back legs had a piece of channel across the legs which I had to drill
out the pop rivets cut it off at the right angle, I made up a simple wire
gauge to do this and then riveted it back on.
I removed the spreader supports which stops the ladder being over extended
and bought some dog chain which had rings each end, opened the ladder out
so the steps were sitting flat and cut the chain to suit.
I split the rings inserted them through holes I drilled under the bottom
step then closed them up again tightly.
Now we have a four step aluminium ladder we can take
away and I have saved myself about $110.
That I think is a good afternoons work.
It is Mother's Day here Today, So to all the Mothers on the List I would
like to Wish One and All a Happy Mother's Day.

Regards
Ray

I removed the spreader supports which stops the ladder being over extended
and bought some dog chain which had rings each end, opened the ladder out
so the steps were sitting flat and cut the chain to suit.
I split the rings inserted them through holes I drilled under the bottom
step then closed them up again tightly.
Now we have a four step aluminium ladder we can take
away and I have saved myself about $110.
That I think is a good afternoons work.
It is Mother's Day here Today, So to all the Mothers on the List I would
like to Wish One and All a Happy Mother's Day.

  Regards
  Ray

[BlindHandyMan] outdoor water faucet

2007-05-12 Thread Jennifer Jackson
Ok, guys, it is my kids again. They will not keep their grubby little hands
off of the water faucet outside. As the few peaceful minutes I have everyday
usually involve them being in the backyard without me, I need a suggestion. Is
there some kind of lock or something I can put on it? I would settle for
something to keep the preschooler from turning it on.

In case you are worried about my kids safety, my back yard is very tiny and
there is only this one little strip around the corner to the locked gate that
puts them out of earshot from my kitchen. Unfortunately the faucet is over
their. I usually notice right off when it is on, but I want to stop it before
it starts. Squirrel shockers and other such deterrents are out of the
question. though you notice the thought has crossed my mind.

Jennifer

RE: [BlindHandyMan] outdoor water faucet

2007-05-12 Thread Robert J. Moore
Depending on the type of handle you should be able to take the screw out of
the middle of the handle and pull it off. It does not have to be held on
with a screw to use it .
Just hide the handle and when you need to use the water your self just take
the handle out with you and slide it on the fossett and away you go. I don't
think I have ever seen one that you can't do this with.
Hope that helps.

[BlindHandyMan] washing machine help

2007-05-12 Thread Robert J. Moore
Brice
I can't remember if you said you hav a maytag or a Kenmore. I have a maytag
and I looked at the ajetater and I discovered that there is a small bolt on
the side about 2/3 down on the side. If yours has this, there may be a
chance that the bolt is sheered or missing. I doubt that it is missing or
you would have found it in the laundry.
