Anybody know where I can get a board stretcher? I was cutting some trim
pieces this weekend and even though I specifically cut them long so I
could trim them to length. Somehow, seemingly impossibly, a couple of the
boards mysteriously shrunk after I cut them. I swear! I took a board
that was half an inch too long, cut an eighth off of it, and ended up with
 a
board half an inch too short. Don't ask me how. Hell, I was so impressed
that I couldn't even get mad.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Board stretcher.

2007-04-17 Thread Dan Rossi
Dale,

I am not coping the trim boards, I am not that patient or good. These
trim boards would not be right for coping anyway, I don't think. These
weren't quarter round. These are the trim pieces called T boards, that
bridge the transition from tile to wood. So they look a bit like a
mushroom in cross section with a slightly domed finished top part about
2 inches wide, and a stem that runs down the bottom middle that is about a
half inch wide and a half inch deep.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Board stretcher.

2007-04-16 Thread Robert J. Moore

On a more serious note.
Would it be practicle to cut your Too short board in half and then cut a ?
inch piece off of a scrap piece and after you have all three pieces together
and nailed to the wall, use some type of wood filler and apply the finnesh.
Question then would be, Are you going to paint this trim or put on some
other type of finnish. If you plan to paint I think this would work but if
you are wanting to keep the wood grain then I don't know weather it would
work or not.

Anybody know where I can get a board stretcher? I was cutting some trim
pieces this weekend and even though I specifically cut them long so I
could trim them to length. Somehow, seemingly impossibly, a couple of the
boards mysteriously shrunk after I cut them. I swear! I took a board
that was half an inch too long, cut an eighth off of it, and ended up with a
board half an inch too short. Don't ask me how. Hell, I was so impressed

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Board stretcher.

2007-04-16 Thread Dan Rossi
Robert,

Yeah, nice idea about just stringing a few pieces together. Sadly, I am
too smart for my own good. In an effort to avoid any kind of finishing, I
purchased trim boards that exactly match the stain and wood of the hard
wood floor. awfully nice of the flooring manufacturers to make it so
easy. However, it doesn't allow for covering up screw-ups with paint.
*GRIN*

I will say that my mitered corners are damn sweet. Unfortunately, they
just don't reach all the way across. *GRIN*

Actually, one of the sliding bevel jobs I got from Lee Valley was
amazingly useful. It has two rectangles, pivoted in the middle. You
push
it into, or around, a corner and that gives you the exact template of the
corner. But even cooler is that there is a little fin in the middle, on
top of the rectangles, that is geared to the rectangles and bisects the
angle for you. Just line up one of the legs, to your saw fence, and the
saw blade to the fin, and you will cut the perfect mitre.

the only problem with my miters is that the ends touch perfectly, but
there is a hairline gap in the middle of the mitre. I believe what is
happening is that the outer edges of the T board are thin, and the middle
is thick. Possibly the saw blade since it has to work harder to pass
through the thicker part of the board, it leaves a slightly wider kerf.
Not sure that is reasonable, but I'm sticking with it.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Board stretcher.

2007-04-16 Thread Dale Leavens
Dan,

Are the inside corners similarly open or are you coping them as you are
supposed to do?

Do they also provide you with a little touch-up colour? often the experts
colour the inside of the cut before bringing them together, small gaps are
then much less visible.

My guess though is that the back surface of the trim isn't exactly square to
the bottom. You are expected to leave a small gap between the bottom rear
edge of the trim and the wall. Because you don't leave that gap against the
rear of the fence on the saw when cutting the angle is off by that fraction.

Anyway, don't look too closely, you'll find most are much worse this is not
cabinetry.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Board stretcher.

2007-04-16 Thread William Stephan

Dan, I had the same thing happen when I was making shelves in the basement for
my wife. I didn't write about it cause it was embarrasing. I was able to rent
a board stretcher from a local hardware store, but the wood was weaker after
stretching, so I just bought another 1x6.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Board stretcher.

2007-04-16 Thread clifford
Dear Robert:
Your idea is much quicker than the method I was about to suggest. I have
had wood to swell when soaked in water. My thought was to soak the board for a
few weeks, and when it reached the desired length, quickly fasten it in place.
Any shrinkage thereafter should bring the walls with it.

Yours Truly,

Clifford Wilson

If this is base board trim you are talking about, That is an easy one. Just
go around to the oppasit side of the wall and with a sledge hammer pound the
wall in about a half inch and you should be good. GRIN
