I just did something you won't want to include on your video. I am
building
 a bookcase headboard.

This afternoon I put the sides, one of the shelves, and a front panel
together. Having learned from my mistakes and other people's advise, I
measured the diagonals to make sure everything was square. And,
 amazingly
 enough, it was.

Then I take the piece of quarter inch plywood that will serve as the back
 to
the headboard and lay it down. Oh no, something isn't right! It fits
 just
right at the bottom but is too narrow at the top.

After giving it some thought (clearly not enough thought) I realize the
 top
was a quarter inch too long and so forced the sides to spread too far
because I screwed them together at each end of the top.

Not a problem, I'll just cut a quarter inch off the top piece and
 everything
 will be fine.

As a matter of fact, the back piece did fit fine. Then I got the bright
idea of using a square to make sure all the corners are 90 degrees.

As my square informed me that both top corners were greater than 90
 degrees,
it hit me!! I had somehow messed up when cutting the quarter inch
 plywood
back. The top had been the right length after all. But now it's a
 quarter
 inch too short.

I should have known when I left for the Post Office without the mail and
 so
had to go back and get it and then left the post office without getting
 the
package waiting for us that it was not a day to put much stock in my
 ability
 to think.

So, while I might make the blind bloopers, you don't want me on a video
made, at least in part, to show sighted people how competent we blind
 folks
 really are.

 Ralph

Shaking your confidence? Actually, these kinds of stories should strengthen
it.

First, you know ahead of time you will make major blunders. My brother who
is not blind and who has several years experience at a custom cabinet shop
told me when I started that a lot of what you learn is how to fix mistakes.

Second, if people with the brains it takes to measure once and cut twice can
manage to put something together that the wife will allow into the house,
you for sure can do it!

You are absalutly correct. I could not have said it better.
I was making that comment about shaking my confidence, a bit tung in cheek.
If I let my blunders keep me from mmoving forward as a handyman I would not
have the tools I have.

In just the last 2 years I have aquired the following and although they are
all very much what you might call previously enjoyed. and most of them don't
get used on a regular basis just when I need them they are there.
I am now the prowd owner of
and air compresser
chopp saw
air wrench
table saw
jig saw
cordless drill
floor jack
and a half dozen mechanics hand tools.
So to those handy folks with advanced skills, keep up the good work
and for us novices like me keep plugging away.

Tom you mentioned that maybe a sighted person watching a film on a blind
person doing a task should rather be viewed as Oh so that's how they do it,
instead of Wow how amazing. I am paraphrasing hear but another thought I
have had and I sure would like to do it is to go to a mechanic school and
show people how to do things when the trouble light that they are using is
nothing more then trouble
My wifes cousin is a much better mechanic then I am but there has been a
time or two over at his place when we were working on either my vehichles or
his and it was just easier for me to do some thing because I am used to
working by feel than he is. Just a fact of life.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Seeing is believing, Not

2006-10-20 Thread Robert J. Moore
May be
we could look at it this way.
No need to show that we are perfect, because no one is. Blind or sighted.
But surely can show that we are capable.
Well most of the time.
One time Me and some friends replaced a head on a car. They could not get it
to fire. I was sure that the cranc shaft and the other part that I think
drives the distributer was correct but the can was off. We dragged the car
back to my house and over the next couple of days I commence to getting the
cam in the correct position.
I got the car running and was oh so proud of myself. I was talking to my
brother on the phone and as I was talking I found a disconnected wire for
the speedometer and in the process of looking at some other things I took
off that big air hose that leads to the air cleaner. I think it is called
the air ram or some thing. well all was good untill we took it out for a
test drive. After the car started on fire and we got that put out, I
realized that I did not put that part back in place and it got cautht up in
the fan and some how a fire ensude.
Not sure what is the moral of the story hear. maybe it is this. Now that you
have the head board completed and ready to put in place. don't smoke in bed.

2006-10-20 Thread Tom Fowle
Ralph,
On the other hand, what we want to show is that we do things, and
try to do things. Best would be to make them see us as much like
themselves, capable of messing up too.

when we, at Smith-kettlewell RERC, had a research project that
was really a training program to teach blind folks to solder etc.
we never criticized anybody for deciding this was something they
didn't want to do or couldn't do.

we must demand the right to fail also, we're not all 'superblind'
All you gotta do is give an honest try, success is not manditory.

Now for the good old top stretcher! GRIN

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Seeing is believing

2006-10-19 Thread Doreen Lundgren
Hi Victor, I have a friend who is blind who works as a mechanic for the L.A.
fire department and has for 31 years. I don't remember if he has a computer.
I could ask. He also has many cars that he takes apart and puts back
together. He offered to show me how to do it if I ever come back that way.

A Great idea, Robert. And when we get those ideas across, let's give
them a show that includes women. You should see the look on the faces

the clerk what we need. My husband is perfectly happy not to be the
handy person in our house. Good thing, because I'd have way more
repairs to do. Grin!

robert,
There are some things a blind person can't do, like driving a car or flying
a plane without sighted help, but the rest
depend on the individual and his/herwillingness to go to extremes and/or learn
and experiment.

If you want to find out how blind folks solder electronics go to:

I have had a thought for a while now, and I would like to get some feed
  back.
To make a long story short I wrote an article describing a situation where I
was telling a sighted Brother in law I had replaced the radiator on the
Familly car. He could not or would not believe me. Well this kind of thing
is all too common to every last one of us.
On one hand We could say we have nothing to prove but on the other hand any
time that we can prove our claims of being able to do what ever it is that
we can do such as building or remodeling a house or rebuilding an engine or
even some thing as simple and mundain as shuvaling our own side walk. It
will ultimately help the nex blind person that a doubting thomas meets once
they see first hand not only that it can be done but even how it is done.
Again what I have is only a thought not a plan. what I was thinking about
doing for my brother in law was having my Wife video tape me replacing a
radiator and explaining what I was doing and making it kind of like an
  instructional video.
If we could get some footage like this of real life situations that the
general public could see I wonder how helpful it could be. What the heck it
could even be entertaining and most people like to be entertained.
Believe it or not you never know when some sighted person may show you or
tell you a way that they saw another blind person do some thing that may be
of great help to you. Every one wins.
If any one knows of a project like this already under way please let me
  know.
I know that we have the blind handy man show and cooking in the dark and so
on And I might add that they are quite informative and entertaining but I
was thinking more along the lines of getting some footage out on local cable
or some such thing. or even having a web site that people could douwn load
  clips.

It could be called some thing like
Hell ya, I can do that!!
  or at least
Heck ya I can do that.
Is this good or have I lost my marbles?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Seeing is believing

2006-10-18 Thread Dale Leavens
My experience is that usually sighted people focus on the wrong aspect.
Working blind is one thing, working in the dark is another. Most of the fuss
I hear about is not so much what I build but if I do it after dark then I
really hear about it. This time of year it is dark around half past six
which is not late and would be of no consequence if I was burning arc
lights. I think it has to do with the absurd realization that in the dark or
not is of no consequence to me. It is maybe the one occasion when they
really understand that I am working in a way they cannot. It moves the thing
from the abstract to reality. The scream of a circular saw coming out of my
back yard after dark prompts curiosity which cannot be satisfied because
they can't see what I am doing and therefore it is difficult or impossible
to perceive that I don't see either in the light or the dark.

People often refuse to fully understand that I don't see anything. Not just
me but I have observed that on many occasions. it is a sort of suspended
belief. In more recent years I believe it to be getting better, there seems
to me to be an improved sort of inclusion mentality particularly among
younger people.

These are gross generalizations of course.

I am not sure that the objective though will be achieved, a little like the
chimpanzee that can sign, a neat trick which brings fame to his trainer but
does anyone pay attention to what the chimp is saying? is the value in being
a clever chimp or in being a chimp that looks a lot like a human?

I'll be a monkey's uncle!

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Seeing is believing

2006-10-18 Thread rj
This reminds me of one of my former neighbor that would cut his grass
around 8 in the morning, knowing full well I got to bed around 7 am, after
work. Asked him if he would wait until 10 Am when I finally got to sleep.
that didn't work. So one night around 1 or 2 in the morning I cut the grass.
It didn't take him long to complain. Told him that 1 or 2 in the morning was
12 noon for me, so what was his problem? Believe it or not, a couple of
times of cutting the grass at 1 or 2 in the morning, he didn't cut his grass
until noon.
