RE: [BlindHandyMan] rattling pipes

2006-10-06 Thread Michael Baldwin

Could be water hammer. That is caused when water suddenly changes from
stopped to moving or moving to stopped. Turn on and off the valve slower
and see if that does the trick. They do make water hammer arresters that
will eliminate or reduce the problem, but I would fix the toilet first and
see if it still does it.

Recently, my stepson broke the floater in the toilet tank. That big plastic
ball on the articulated arm that stops the water flow when it reaches a
certain level. So now, to flush it, we turn on the water from the wall
valve. When we do this, the pipes make a very loud rattling sound as if they
want to jump out of their mountings. HOw do I fix this? The nuts ataching
the in flow pipe to the tank and to the wall seem to be tight, so I can only
guess this is happening inside the wall. Is this about right?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] rattling pipes

2006-10-05 Thread rj
More likely the washer or seal on the ballcock doesn't have pressure on it.
This could and in more cases does cause a rattling noise in the pipes. I
suggest you replace the ballcock with a flow-master ballcock. Spend the
extra dollar and get the one with the round plastic pipe, which the float
rides up on. The I bean flow master just doesn't do the job. How you change
a ball cock.

1. Turn off the water to the tank.
2 flush to remove most of the water from the tank
3. Take a sponge and sponge out the rest of the water from the tank.
4.Disconnect the supply line from the bottom of the ballcock.
6 Remove the retaining nut from the ballcock
7 Lift old ballcock from tank.

Installing new ballcock
1. If you purchase a flow-master with the round pipe. Adjust height of ball
cock by holding upper part of ballcock and turning bottom for adjustment.
Should be about 1/2 inch from top of tank.
2 Place gasket on threaded end
3 Place ballcock in tank.
4 make sure float is at the right angle in tank for smooth operation.
5 Place retainer nut on ballcock and tighten
6 pour some water in tank to make sure gasket is sealed at bottom of tank.
7 attach the supply line and tighten nut so there is no leak at the fitting.

Yeah, I was afraid of that, sigh. Looks like I'll have to go under and see
what's what. Bigger sigh. Thought, on the bright side I don't have to use a
flashlight. One up on the sighties! tee hee.

The pipes are rattling where they contact your house. This is inside the
walls or in a basement or crawl space. If you can get to them where they
are exposed in a basement or crawl space, you can usually stop some of the
rattling. Obviously, inside the walls would be an extremely expensive
 proposition!
