Re: [BlindHandyMan] slip joint leak: I messed up?

2006-10-19 Thread Mickey Fixsen
Tom,

Another thing to check is the short piece of pipe that screws onto the big
drain piece in the sink. This pipe is called the tailpiece and screws onto the
drain basket with a fine thread. this fine thread should have a bit of pipe
thread sealant on it and it should be screwed up tight to the drain basket.
When you are tightening the slip joint nut, you are turning it in the direction
that can loosen the tailpiece thread. Check to make sure this has not happened.

Another thing is to make sure that none of the pieces have rotted through with
either small holes or cracks.

Good luck.

I am not sure I fully understand the set-up you have but most of my drains
have a tail coming down from the bottom of the sink which slides into the
top of the sewer, sometimes right into the top of the trap. There is a nylon
ring like a compression fitting you slide over the tail just under the nut
which is squeezed between the hand nut and the inside of the sewer fitting
so when you screw the nut down it forces this ring down into the top of the
sewer drain fitting. The ring is wedged in cross section, the thin side goes
down and this forms a compression fitting around the tail of the sink.

If the tail is distorted you won't get a good seal but usually that doesn't
matter a lot unless there is pressure in the sink, once the trap begins to
syphon that fitting will be quite forgiving. If the drainage is slow though,
drips will squeeze out. Of course you prefer it to be water tight anyway but
in my experience, hand tight is all you need.

Here, common sizes are inch and an eighth, inch and a quarter and inch and a
half, the fit should be snug.

There are of course many different arrangements and in an older house often
some cobbled together hybrid. Your system may be quite different, it
actually sounds quite different but I might be misunderstanding it.

   Dale,
I believe the rubber gaskets in the new nuts are square in cross section,
but I'll check more carefully that could be it!

I don't see that the flanged end of the pipe looks distorted, but again,
   i'll check carefully.

Since there is a plastic flange that fits inside the upper end of the
   small
pipe which I might call a universal joint? maybe that nut
doesn't need a rubber gasket. That might be keeping the nut from
   threading
far enough up on the drain end to stayput.

I'll have along weekend with Sue off at a music workshop to fill, so may
as welll muck about with drains.

   Thanks
   Tom

Re: [BlindHandyMan] slip joint leak: I messed up?

2006-10-19 Thread Tom Fowle
Dale,
Yes, it's quite different, The threaded tail from the drain takes an inch
and a quarter slip nut and has a flange shaped plastic insert that is pushed
up against this tail by a small flange on
the top of a piece of smaller pipe with the afore mentioned slip joint nut
holding this all together.

This first pipe is maybe 2 inches long and is a kind of joiner between
the drain and a further set of slip joint pipes that bring the drains
from the two sinks together and go through the trap and
into the cast iron sewer.

The old stuff had no washers in the slip joint nuts but the new
nuts came with square cross section washers but with a washer in the top
fitting where it goes up against the larger drain pipe, the nut
won't thread on enough to stay put.

I suspect that slow drain is most of the problem causing the backup that leaves
the pipe full long enough to leak.

I'm beginning to think the vent is stopped cause it bubbles a lot when full.

Thanks, will continue to thrash this weekend.

Tom

Re: [BlindHandyMan] slip joint leak: I messed up?

2006-10-19 Thread Tom Fowle
Hi Mickey,
Yep, I looked carefully at the tail piece and it is coroded solid, so if it
is leaking it's cause it has crack.

I'm going to put some compound or teflon tape on that thread
also to see if that stops it.

With the supplied washer in the slip joint nut, the nut
can't come up far enough on the tail piece thread to hold
so I think either the washer is too
thick or the threads on the tail piece are stripped.

Thanks
tom

At 10:21 PM 10/17/2006, you wrote:

so I tried to clear a kitchen double sink drain with a
plunger,it's worked in the past, and noticed a couple days later
water all over the floor!

We had a large plastic drawer under the sink in the cupboard for
cleaning stuff, and that had filled up with drain water before
spilling over so we'd notice. So we hadn't needed cleaning stuff
in the meantime.

So we drug it all out, tossed the stuff that was soaked, mopped,
mopped and mopped and got it more or less dry.

then we remembered we have at least two wet dry vacuums which
might just have made things easier? groan

I found a slip joint nut at the end of the drain just below the
sink that had split.

so I took the thing apart and took the little 2 inch long
connector piece with two nuts on it, and a little plastic flange
that presumably is a washer between the drain end and the flange
of the pipe and went down to our nice old ace hardware store.

I got four new nuts knowing how things go. Came in little
plastic packages with rubber washers and all. Only a buck and a
half each, cheap!

got home this evening after a day of 400 emails and downloads and
meetings and so on, and put things back together. I was so, so
carefull not to cross thread the nuts. I tightened up on the
upper nut that's against the drain first, cause the lower one is
the one that is a real slip joint.

got it all fairly tight and put a pair of slip joint pliers on it
just to get it firm, not too hard.

Drip, drip, drip, and blasphemy!

I was stamping around wondering what was wrong, and hit something
small with my large blind foot.

It was the little plastic flange that was supposed to go on top
of the pipe, against the drain end.

took it all apart, it isn't really that hard, and put the flange
in.

Put it back together and when tightening up the upper nut, it
popped loose just as it was tight.

More speaking to spirits of the sewer in their language!

wondered if I'd stripped the top nut somehow so took it all apart
again and replaced the upper nut.

Put it all back again, so, so, so carefully!

Drip,drip, drip!

Well onlyh with a heavy flow of water.

So I guess I may have stripped the threads on the end of the
drain its self. That takes a huge rench, bigger than i believe
is my largest crescent.

And what happens when you undo that huge nut that's been there
for over 30 years?

Other stuff will undoubtedly bust, I just know it.

So, oh wise and wonderfull handy persons, where did I go wrong?

Besides using too much force on a 30 yeaar old sink wwith a
plunger?

Now be nice, tell me I didn't mess up, it was just age.

Like how I'm falling apart after sixty!
It's just age.
that's what my doc says when I complain about sstuff that annoys
me, it's just age.

sorry its so long, my wife isn't here to hear me speaking nasty
things so I just had to go off.

Tom,

Is their any way possible for you to apply a small amount of air pressure
to the sink side of the drain and then feel for the air leek underneath? If
you have access to an air compressor turn the regulator down to about 8LBS,
use a rag to seal around the outflow side of the sink and squeeze the
trigger on the air nozel. You may need an assistant to man the air nozel
otherwise it might be a bit of a stretch from sink to pipes. The best part
of this technique is that air won't get your seeing fingers wet.

2006-10-18 Thread William Stephan
Hoom, we used to use a water and dish washing detergent mix to check for leaks
on tanks. I don't know how practical this would be, but a sighted person could
pretty easily see where the bubbles were while the blower was blowing if Tom
was able to apply a little of that solution on his pipes.

Tom,
Don't feel bad. One time someone asked me to use a device that forced
air into the sink drain to clear it for her. So, being a kind soul
that I am, I proceeded as she instructed. It was an old house and the
air pressure blew the pipes off at the back wall. Hmm, had to call the pros.

2006-10-18 Thread Tom Fowle
Dale,
I believe the rubber gaskets in the new nuts are square in cross section,
but I'll check more carefully that could be it!

I don't see that the flanged end of the pipe looks distorted, but again,
i'll check carefully.

Since there is a plastic flange that fits inside the upper end of the small
pipe which I might call a universal joint? maybe that nut
doesn't need a rubber gasket. That might be keeping the nut from threading
far enough up on the drain end to stayput.

I'll have along weekend with Sue off at a music workshop to fill, so may
as welll muck about with drains.

Thanks

Re: [BlindHandyMan] slip joint leak: I messed up?

2006-10-18 Thread Dale Leavens

[BlindHandyMan] slip joint leak: I messed up?

2006-10-17 Thread Tom Fowle
so I tried to clear a kitchen double sink drain with a
plunger,it's worked in the past, and noticed a couple days later
water all over the floor!

Tom

Re: [BlindHandyMan] slip joint leak: I messed up?

2006-10-17 Thread Dale Leavens
I wonder if years of harsh chemicals have damaged the tail piece of the
sink? or maybe even the gasket between the drain basket and the body of the
sink?

The thing is to discover where the water is coming from. Eyes can often see
small drips forming but once the fingers are damp they don't see a damn
thing.

I have sometimes found that a supply of paper towel so you can dry
thoroughly and then wrap a dry piece around the pipe helps to discover that
damp point where the water appears. You move your way up and down the pipe
with pieces of this paper towel until you locate the source. It isn't always
obvious and may not be where you think.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] slip joint leak: I messed up?

so I tried to clear a kitchen double sink drain with a
plunger,it's worked in the past, and noticed a couple days later
 water all over the floor!

We had a large plastic drawer under the sink in the cupboard for
cleaning stuff, and that had filled up with drain water before
spilling over so we'd notice. So we hadn't needed cleaning stuff
 in the meantime.

So we drug it all out, tossed the stuff that was soaked, mopped,
mopped and mopped and got it more or less dry.

then we remembered we have at least two wet dry vacuums which
might just have made things easier? groan
