Re: [BlindHandyMan] Help needed;

2010-02-04 Thread Lenny McHugh
Hi Brice, well the four additional filters, what you referred to as jacks,
are required for your telephones. With dsl you need a line directly from the
wall jack to your modem. For all other phones you need a filter in-line. If
you have any wall mounted phones you will require a filter designed for that
phone.

sent me a DSL phone modem slash Y-5 for internet access. I've never hooked
one of these up before. It came in a box, and the modem is about 8 by 10
inches, with an AC adapter, 2 phone lines about 15 to 25 feet long, not
sure, haven't unraveled it yet. Plus 4 different jacks of some kind the fit
into the wall jacks. Went to A T and T's web sight and can't a anything on

The additional jacks. In our case they were short cords with a phone plug on
one end and the other has one or two femal jacks. One is marked telephone the
other computer. Or if only one it is for a phone. Anyway make sure the phone
is in the right jack. As someone elese mentioned they are filters to keep
computer noise out of the phone. The moden probably has a in and out port one
going to the phone jack the other to the computer. One needs a little sighted
help in identifying these ports and any double ones the filters then it should
make sense.
You can hear the noise in the phone if you are in the incorrect side on the
filters.

This clears up the phone jacks and filters. Now, after hooking these up,
should the phone start working? Also, the build in phone and wireless is
all one unit. I'm thinking I'm going to need some sighted help. They want
an extra $119 for a tech to come out to hook it up, which I can't see paying

Brice, I would think that they would have some help by phone. they have a
special needs area for cell phones. Anyway I would first take one filter and
one corded phone and hook it up to make sure it works. It is possible that
they sent you the install packabe before the service is actually set up.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Help needed;

2010-02-04 Thread Bob Kennedy
That is a combination router and modem. There is a place for a normal phone
line to go in the back, should be on one end. The other ports are for Ethernet
cables to plug in.

They probably also included a wireless card which is supposed to be installed
in a laptop, they assume you own one. If you already have a wireless
connection, you can leave it in the box.

What you will need to do is plug in the power adapter first to the wall outlet
then to the back of the router. They should also have included a CD for
installation. Run that and it should be able to walk you through the setup.

One of the lines included is to connect the modem to the phone box. The
second, thicker and larger ends is the Ethernet cable and will connect from the
port on the back of your computer to any of the 4 ports on the back of the
modem.

There is a series of numbers on the bottom of the router as well. One of them
will be the password to make changes to the router online. I think they all
use the same web address which is 192.168.1.254 and then you will need someone
to read you the numbers off the bottom of the router to move on. You can
change the password to something you remember so you don't have to worry about
the numbers later on.

This should get you going and hopefully you won't have to call India to get
help.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Help needed;

2010-02-04 Thread Spiro
in brief, as was recently explained to me; the dsl comes in and is raw
wide band.
You go from the place where it enters the house to the box.
The dsl goes through unfiltered and remains wide band to any and all
computers except for dial ups that you may wish to use.
The phones get the other side of the box's out put.
One output is raw dsl and the other is narrow, filtered, voice band.
Your phones get the filtered voice band signal so that
1. he phones do not dump noise onto the computer lines,
2. the dsl doesn't blast noise at your phone
and 3. you can still use dial up computers unhindered.
Although I'm sure they don't wantyou to so they can keep that separated.
The cat5 or thicker round cable is for the computer, but you probably know
that already.

you can take the tool they give and connect the laptop with ease, or
you can go into the router and turn on encryption and right down the
key it gives you. Then all you have to do is plug in the info when
you click connect to the SSID that your router broadcasts.
you will have to use a cable with the tool, but it does the
connection very nice and in only a few minutes. it secures the router
and sets up the wireless connection.

Brice,

Yeah, it is possible. If you open your browser on your desktop and go to
192.168.1.1 you can log into your router. Then you can turn on the

Make damn sure you change the password on the admin user. Also, change
the S I D to some other name. Actually, I have mine set not to broadcast

You can also set up the wireless to only accept connections from specific

I would suggest turning on wep or one of the other encrypted protocols. If you
don't, someone can easily snoop your trafic. This
will allow them to inpersonate one of your computers and get on your network
even if you have only a specific set of MAC addresses
allowed. WEP is not totally secure either; but, it is hard enough that hackers
will move on to other access points that aren't
protected. I can attach to 4 other networks other than mine from my home.
These others are wide open and broadcasting. What
people don't realize you can be held responsible if someone uses your network
to hack computers.

I tried to explain this to my neighbor and help him get encryption set up; but,
he hasn't taken me up on it yet.

Thanks Dan, maybe that's my problem. I just took it for granted that the
wireless end of the router was on by default. Yes, when I set up my desktop
to the router, I change the admin user name and password. Well, I'll give
it a shot again today, and see if I can get my laptop hooked up.

   Brice,

Yeah, it is possible. If you open your browser on your desktop and go to
192.168.1.1 you can log into your router. Then you can turn on the
wireless radio and set up some other things.

Make damn sure you change the password on the admin user. Also, change
the S I D to some other name. Actually, I have mine set not to broadcast
   the sid at all.

You can also set up the wireless to only accept connections from specific
machines. You may want to do that as well so that your neighbors aren't
   surfing on your network.

   Later.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] help needed

2009-06-15 Thread Scott Howell
I'd like to make the recommendation that wpa2 be used since wep is not
as secure and in fact can slow a connection a bit. Just my experience
and most folks in the IT security business will recommend wpa2 as
well. Just my two cents worth.

On Jun 15, 2009, at 10:46 AM, Terry Klarich wrote:

I would suggest turning on wep or one of the other encrypted
protocols. If you don't, someone can easily snoop your trafic. This
will allow them to inpersonate one of your computers and get on your
network even if you have only a specific set of MAC addresses
allowed. WEP is not totally secure either; but, it is hard enough
that hackers will move on to other access points that aren't
protected. I can attach to 4 other networks other than mine from my
home. These others are wide open and broadcasting. What
people don't realize you can be held responsible if someone uses
 your network to hack computers.

I tried to explain this to my neighbor and help him get encryption
set up; but, he hasn't taken me up on it yet.

You can use a mail set if the panels were nailed on with finish nails, which
have a small head with an indent on the top. A few raps with a hammer should
set them below the wood surface. If it is nail with a flat head common nail a
small flat ended punch can be used to countersink them.

Sounds like the paneling nails aren't nailed into a stud or anything
substantial enough to hold them if they are coming out with the heating and

You can use a mail set if the panels were nailed on with finish nails, which
have a small head with an indent on the top. A few raps with a hammer should
set them below the wood surface. If it is nail with a flat head common nail a
small flat ended punch can be used to countersink them.

You could try some sheet rock screws and sink them a little into the paneling

Sounds like the paneling nails aren't nailed into a stud or anything
substantial enough to hold them if they are coming out with the heating and
cooling of your house. Those ribbed paneling nails are a real bugger to even
pull out with a claw hammer if they are nailed into a stud.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] help needed

2007-03-14 Thread R S Enterprises
A small one eigth inch pin peunch will work. Some may come back out with time
but it is just a matter and resetting them again.
A pin punch could be made by sawing or grinding the end of a 10 or 16 penney
nail off square on the point end. It might bend with use and you can make
another one one or just buy the animal .

then when they come up, replace them with panel nails. Get someone to help
you match the color, either brown or tan; keep a box around and tap one in
each hole when one of those *tacks comes up. You'll only have to do it
once.
