Hi Gents, I have a paper tape perforator (perf), probably made by Teletype
Corp, anda partly homebrew keyer/reader for the paper tapeboth items for
sale. The perf comes with a solid cherry-wood cabinet with a built-in
powersupply and a place for the tape supply. It's very similar to what W1AW
used to use for bulletins and codepracticeback in the 40?-60's.  I used it for
re-sending W1AW-issued bulletins. The perf comes with a fairly large supply of
2-level paper tape and amanualyou won't run out anytime soon!! The keyer
comes with two reels. If you live within driving distance of ~Kansas City, MO
you may havethe roll-around desk that the units are sitting on. I'd prefer not
to ship, but if I do the cost will be at least $100 morejustfor
packing/crating.  The perf is heavy, but about the size of a smalltypewriter.
If you pick up the units, I have another perf that you may have for partsOR to
get it working. No photos have been taken yet but I can do so if there is any
seriousinterest in these units. I'm asking $750 for the two units but, as
mentioned, there will beother items available for free with the
sale.-Now,
about the 3-gate (Multi-gate keyer) keyer.  It was originally usedfor sending
TTYmessages from the Air Force's SAC HQ "underground" in Omaha. It has been
converted to send CW with standard 5-level paper tape.It can be used to send
either up to 3 messages or up to 6 messages.I used to use it for sending
contest exchanges.  I might have themanual for itnot sure. The gates are
independently controlled by solenoids/clutch whichare remote controlled.  The
unit's motor is equipped with "100-speed"gears.  I'm pretty sure I have the
60-speed gears if you want to use itfor standard RTTY messaging.  The unit
comes with a wood box that is usedfor sound control. If you have access to old
CQ mags, it's on the cover of the January, 1963issue with some info inside. I'm
asking $200 for it and the control unit. 73,Charlie, N0TT

Parting Out Hickok 600A tube tester. This is a nice looking unit,  front
control panel is excellent, meter is good. The tube data scroll is white and
in great shape. There are 3 wafer switches that are broken but the rest of
the switches and controls look good. The tubes and the transformers are
missing.  I have lots of pictures. The cabinet is in overall nice shape.
Please let me know what you need. Thanks, Charlie Hugg, K5MBX

I'm having a string of bad luck lately apparently. For the second time, a
package arrived at the buyers trashed. The first was two weeks ago, sent by
UPS. Despite being plainly labeled in LARGE print all over that said FRAGILE,
the Lafayette receiver was trashed on arrival. I'm now in a battle with UPS to
get insurance payment, even threatening legal action.

Now, just yesterday I was informed by and shown pictures of a package I sent
postal service, thinking maybe they would be more responsible. A Swan 500 and
power supply. Sent in two separate boxes encased in peanuts obtained from
UHaul, which has a very good reputation for not treating their shipments like
footballs during the playoffs. ALso had them wrapped in bubble wrap and the
boxes marked FRAGILE and the post office indicating so on the tracking
documents. Arrived like the UPS boxes ... looking like other 50 to 100 lb boxes
had been dropped on top of mine. Buyer still in the process of determining
damage to the rig and if it is fatal damage or minor.

My point is .. and my belief is .. I don't give a DAMN for ANY of the shippers
excuses. I pay them for one thing.. to SHIP a box from point A to point B, and
for that box to arrive in one piece just like when I dropped it off for
shipping. Especially when it is indicated that it is fragile. I hope to hell no
one EVER tries shipping glass glasses because I firmly believe they would
arrive as a pile of glass shards in the box. And, I do not appreciate being
told by a shipper that "it was not damaged during shipping." THAT crap is an
insult to someone's intelligence

I don't know the solution, except maybe to take the equipment to a place that
will absolutely fill the box with foam insulation and it becomes a block that
has to be cut away when it arrives. Even then, I'm sure the shipper would find
some way to make it arrive looking like it had been dropped from a B52 at
20,000 feet. Remember when they used to tout the durability of Collins gear,
saying they could be dropped from a plane and still be operational after
landing. I dont think even a Collins KWM2 can survive the incompetence of the
three major shippers. The employees have no respect or care for anything they
handle. It seems to be toss it on the truck from 20 feet away, stack it 10 high
with 50 lbs on top of each and then toss it into the driveway. Sometimes, I'm
surprised they even get out of the truck when they deliver a package instead of
just tossing it out the door and driving away. They must get out of the truck
if they have to get a signature.

Hi Rob,

I have shipped and received many large and heavy boatanchors over the last
ten years or so via FedEx Ground.

I have NEVER had a problem.

My most recent purchase was a Swan 400 (shipped from MA to PA) which
included an Astatic desk mike, 117B power supply, 420 VFO, and the 400
transceiver.

All four items were shipped in one box (about 50 lbs total) which was
properly packed by the seller.

The radio and accessories arrived in perfect shape and were placed on the
air the following day after initial checks and power up.

Interestingly enough, the number of people who are now actually learning
the International Morse code is increasing even though a working knowledge
of the code is no longer required. However, at least when listening to the
bands, the actual percentage of operators using CW, as opposed to using
SSB, is quite small. Of course, on one of the few weekends during the year,
when there is a major CW contest, like this weekend, the usage is
considerable. But, after Z this evening, the number of signals dropped to
almost
zero!

Remembering back to the 1960s, if I am remembering correctly, the actual
number of CW stations operating, at any 1 time, was considerably more than
what it is today.

Of course, in those "goode olde dayes", considering the average wages of
people, equipment was considerably more expensive in terms of percentage of
wages. Back then, CW equipment was often barely affordable, by most
amateur radio operators, AM transmitters were expensive, and, until at least
around 1966, SSB equipment was, generally, VERY expensive.

Of course, low powered AM equipment, like the Heath DX-40 and DX-60, were
not that expensive. But, especially on 80, 40, and 20-meters, after dark,
when the "big boys" came on, those with the low powered equipment went to
CW or stopped operating completely. Today, when inflation is taken into
consideration, and the effective purchasing power of money is considered,
equipment is dirt cheap! One can get, today, a 100-watt SSB, AM, FM, CW HF
transceiver for quite a bit less than what a 100-watt output AM / CW
transmitter cost, in equivalent purchasing power, in the 1960s and that
equipment is
light years ahead in terms of performance.

The ARRL has been, seemingly, pushing for more WINLINK / PACTOR
availability for some time. One speculation is that they hope to increase
membership
through more boat, and yacht, owners getting licenses specifically for
operating using those modes because they do not want to have to pay for
Internet access using considerably more expensive commercial links. Of
course,
being able to afford, and to operate, such watercraft usually requires a
substantial investment and yet those same people don't want to spend any money
to be able to use the Internet while on the water. Then, again, amateur
radio operators also have a reputation as to being "cheap" and, I suppose,
boat / yacht owners are no different where money is concerned!
Although the ARRL does not normally make the actual number of members
public, if one takes a look at the mailing notice that has to be published,
periodically, that is in small print in the back of QST, it is pretty easy to
get a pretty good idea as to the number of members.
For some time, the ARRL has "pushed" EMCOMM to get new members to replace
other members who have abandoned the ARRL and, it seems, that they are
doing the same thing with boat owners.
I abandoned the ARRL some time back because they have long stopped
supporting what I believe the direction that amateur radio should take. Since
I
am not an ARRL member, I do not comment on the internal workings of that
organization. However, when the ARRL submits petitions to the FCC, or even
when they are proposing such, that affects the entire amateur radio
population then I definitely do have the right to comment!
Several years ago, the ARRL submitted a request for an NPRM that expanded
WINLINK / PACTOR operations that they retracted after quite an uprising
within the membership. It appears that they might be trying it again.
I realize that thing are changing and have been changing for some time
during the over 56-years that I have been licensed and some of those changes
have been for the good of amateur radio and some have not been good for
amateur radio. However, I definitely believe in doing everything possible to
stop changes that are definitely not in the best interests of the Amateur
Radio Service.

Subject: [Glowbugs] I agree

Dear David,
I echo all of the sentiments below. I think that in retrospect, it was a
huge mistake to take away so much CW spectrum from the General Class CW
operators on 80m.
I also want to STRONGLY OPPOSE expansion of WINLINK / PACTOR and any other
UNATTENDED digital mode operations on our HF bands! They cause QRM and are
a nuisance no matter what is done to claim that they have been cleaned up!
Many of my ham friends and I confess to having missed the April 2015 QST
article and your It Seems to Us page in the September 2015 issue. These
articles discuss proposed changes to accommodate digital modes, while
eliminating or reducing extra class phone privileges on 80 meters. Many of us
have
now been awakened to the ARRL’s conclusions and the proposed recommendations
to its executive committee, and to the FCC. And while the door may be
closed to the initial polling (only 1,000 respondents), we nevertheless feel
the need for clarification, and if necessary an appeal for a reconsideration
of these ARRL’s proposals.First, this may be simply a matter of
clarification. I read, and then re-read both the September and April articles
several
times. I can find no assurance that the proposal would provide that the
remaining 3650-3700 phone segment will be retained for the exclusive use of
Amateur Extra Class licensees. While this may be merely an oversight, the
absence of this assurance seems suspicious. A clear statement in your recap
like “while the extra class phone exclusivity will be reduced by 50 kHz, the
3650-3700 segment will be protected for the exclusive use of holders of
Amateur Extra Class licensees,” would have eliminated much anxiety. Would you
please clarify this via email and through QST as soon as possible.Next,
many of us earned extra class licenses through hard work and devotion to the
hobby. I earned mine shortly after incentive licensing was introduced in the
1970s. Incentive licensing is, in my opinion, one of the ARRL’s most
significant initiatives. I was
