Re: [Boatanchors] Navigator and Heathkit A-1 Meters
Probably not (well, other than putting a better meter in!!). I also find the meter banging around to be a real PITA but, in my mental musings, I haven't thought of any way to tame the beast. You could use an RC network (sort of a slow attack quick discharge) but that would take some fiddling around with. Basically you have, in the meter, a mechanical system with a 'huge' amount of overshoot. You hit the meter with a quick shot of current and it goes way over and then settles back to the right reading. The ONLY way to cure that is to slow down the current rise. Then, of course, you have to worry about the what happens when the drive current goes down - you don't want to have too much 'hang'. Plus the next part of the problem is that meter resistance is fairly low - so you are limited in how much R (as part of your RC network) you can put in series with meter. So the R needs to be a low value. Which means the C needs to be big'ish. I thought about playing around with this on the bench but ... well, just one more thing I won't get to. 73Bob Groh, WA2CKY On Friday, October 14, 2016 9:55 AM, Gary Franklin wrote: Is there a solution for snubbing/taming the meter action on the Johnson Navigator and Heathkit AT-1 meters? [Boatanchors] Needed: NC-300/303 power transformer (or something that will work)
Working with another ham on several NC-300 and NC-303 projects, and we need a power transformer for one of our babies. It is not just a bad transformer, it is a totally missing, gone, missing from action transformer. Still working on developing an idea of what is needed specification wise (other than an actual transformer from the subject receivers) and essentially what we know so far:Physical size: lamination stack is about 2-1/2 by 3-1/2 by 2-1/2 inches tall. End bells add about 5/8" to each end. Secondary HV: 300V CT at maybe 150 mAFilament1 : 6.3VAC at 3 A(?)Filament2 : 13.6VAC at 1/2 A I know the HV side looks a bit low but National used a FW rectifier with cap input filters to give 160VDC and 150 VDC so, yes, HV is low. Thoughts, opinions and leads all appreciated. Bob Groh, WA2CKY ___ Boatanchors mailing list Boatanchors@puck.nether.net https://puck.nether.net/mailman/listinfo/boatanchors
[Boatanchors] Heat conditioning old transformer
Getting ready to turn on some old boatanchors after upgrades for electrolytics et al. This piece of gear has not been used for many, many years. In the back of my mind, I have a recollection that recommended pulling all loads from the old transformer, putting a light load on one of the secondaries (for example, the 6V filament winding) and then running the unit transformer for a period of time (hours) to get it luke warm. The idea was to warm up everything and drive off any moisture that might have accumulated over the years. Does anyone have an opinion on this idea? Have you ever done it? 73Bob Groh, WA2CKY ___ Boatanchors mailing list Boatanchors@puck.nether.net https://puck.nether.net/mailman/listinfo/boatanchors
Re: [Boatanchors] Info needed - NE-71 crystal oven
Mike, those crystal ovens are usually dirt simple - just a thermostatic switch (set to open when the temperature exceeds the desired operating temp) connected in series with a heater. You apply the rated voltage, the heater turns on until the temperature goes above the set temp and then the switch opens, heater turns off, oven cools down, thermal switch closes, etc, etc. Should be easy to eyeball and to use a VOM to figure out what is going on. Or maybe not. [Boatanchors] FS: NRI Model 70 Tube Tester $40 plus shipping.
More goodies from the ham shack. I've had this National Radio Institute model 70 Tube tester for a few years. I have just refinished the wood case and, since I have a couple of other tube testers, it is a good time to sell this one. I can send a link to a web photo album to anyone who is interested. I have used more than a few times over the years and certainly seems to get the job done. Not as comprehensive a check as a high end tester but adequate for sure. Asking $40 plus shipping ( I would estimate shipping at less than $25 via UPS Ground). If you are interested, drop me a line. 73Bob Groh, WA2CKY ___ Boatanchors mailing list Boatanchors@puck.nether.net https://puck.nether.net/mailman/listinfo/boatanchors
[Boatanchors] FS: vintage 10M mobile AM VFO transmitter
Yeah, I am a bit sentimental about this rig. It dates from (I think) the mid-1950's. It was given to me by a friend (now SK) and was, in turn, given to him by another local (i.e. Kansas City area) ham 'back in the day'. The original article was in CQ Magazine, June 1950. The tube line up was 6AK5 to 6C4 to 12AQ5 final with 6AQ6 modulator (I think the 12V final was added in 1958). A web-based photo album is available (email for the link - this list won't pass through web links). I even have the original carbon mike which will be included as well as a photo copy of the original CQ article and a photo of the original schematic. I would like to find someone who will keep this old gal going and not just tear it down or whatever. I have way too many projects and want to find a good home for this. Price: $35 plus shipping (which I guesstimate should be less than $25 - US only please). Drop me a line if you are interested. 73 and thanksBob Groh, WA2CKY ___ Boatanchors mailing list Boatanchors@puck.nether.net https://puck.nether.net/mailman/listinfo/boatanchors
[Boatanchors] Phone plug for VTVMs and VOMs
Lost the email but a month or so ago, someone was looking for a phone plug which had a somewhat wider band of insulation between the tip and body. This type of plug was used on probe's (where they plugged into a meter) to give a bit higher breakdown voltage. I do have some of those so email me if you need one. As an additional comment, I visually examined about 10 of those phone plugs - some with the narrow insulation band and some with the wider insulation band. ALL of them seem to have (again just a visual inspection) identical lengths - from the base of the plug body to the tip of the plug. The wider insulation does not make the probe longer. Bottom line: you don't need the special wider insulation version - the regular will work nicely unless of course it breaks over on high voltage. 73Bob, WA2CKY ___ Boatanchors mailing list Boatanchors@puck.nether.net https://puck.nether.net/mailman/listinfo/boatanchors
[Boatanchors] Just finished restoration of an EF Johnson TR switch
Just had to crow about (finally) finishing restoration of a E.F.Johnson T-R switch (#250-39). It was really a minor restoration as basic unit was in pretty good shape - the only marginal thing was the case exterior which was originally a 'chromed' finish (not chrome but some sort of bright finish on steel) which was flaking and not looking very good. I lightly sanded the exterior to clean it and then spray painted it with Krylon black paint (it was the only color I had!). The repainting was 4 years ago (!! Yeah, I know ... pretty much a slacker on this stuff) and it sat on the shelf until last week. I finally grabbed it, put it on the bench, replaced the ac line cord with a 3-wire only (with ground) and reformed the electrolytics. Back up and running and looking good! Wish I could put a photo in this posting but, if you want to see pics, drop me a line and I'll send a link to a web album. 73Bob Groh, WA2CKY ___ Boatanchors mailing list Boatanchors@puck.nether.net https://puck.nether.net/mailman/listinfo/boatanchors

[Boatanchors] Power transformers - anyone need some?
As part of my shack cleanup, I am organizing my 'supply' of 100 to 200w ac transformers, e.g. Stancor P-4081 (800 VCT@160 mA + 5V and 6V filaments). I probably will only keep one (you know, just in case I get the urge to build a 100W CW rig) but that will leave a couple that are not needed. [Boatanchors] Does anyone need any parts from an HP-606 RF generator?
I have a old HP-606 RF generator which I am never going to get going again so, much to my dismay, I am going to have to scrap it (no one wants to buy it and I don't want to even consider shipping it!!). So if you need almost anything from it, drop me a line. Everything is there now except for the RF attenuator which I intend to keep and use.
