Re: [boinc_dev] 7.10 client release

2017-09-19 Thread Jord van der Elst
I think that you should get your priorities straight first, David. You
released a BOINC 7.8 onto the community and don't do anything about
aftercare, documentation, or release notes/version history.

What I dislike the most about this new setup is that you go ahead with
releasing a version, despite there being two or three people with
objections about it, and that when the community comes to the forums with
the problems, that that same community can go and figure out what is wrong
and how to fix that. There have been plenty of reports now about major bugs
in this client, or omissions of code, or omissions of fixes, severe
problems with VirtualBox.

What happens to some users out there is that they lose their complete data
directory before they can continue with a previous version. That means that
we released an Alpha version, because only on Alpha's do we expect that
things can go so bad that you can lose all your work.

In my opinion, the Release Manager has some more responsibility than just
throwing a new version onto the community: when there are problems out in
the world that you try to debug them with the community and where necessary
build a new version that fixes most of those problems; debug, fix, release,
debug, fix, release; until everything is somewhat stable again. Or if
that's too much work, officially remove the buggy version and go back to
the previous stable.

You don't just ignore the problems in the field, leave that to the
community to debug and meanwhilst go test a new version. Because when you
do it like that, the community will quickly quit trying to do anything with
this program again, because their complaints about it go unheard and it's
becoming unworkable. Meanwhilst, the helpers on the forums get the brunt of
your way of doing things, they get yelled at when it doesn't work, they get
pointed at as 'those cannot help me'.

So, please, work with us instead of against us, let's try to be one
community instead of the several. Really let's try to get 7.8 fixed first,
or go back to 7.6, but don't just blunder on and go test a new version when
the old version is wreaking havoc out there.

I broke client's logging and I'd like to fix it before the next version.

Re: [boinc_dev] 7.10 client release

2017-09-18 Thread Richard Haselgrove
The non-starting client problem seems to have been caused by a batch of CPDN
simulations - specifically WAH2 PNW - with 51 upload files. First report of a
successful restart with that task removed. So, provided the under-sized buffer
fix is included in the build - that's "client: eliminate possible buffer
overflow in reporting result errors", Aug 16, 8e78576 and b355a13, already
merged into master - we should be good for a test.

possibly triggered by an application crash, but as yet it's unclear why that
should take out BOINC as well - my working hypothesis is file corruption, but I
have no direct evidence yet.
It might be worth holding off on new releases while this issue is still
unexplained.

is ready for testing, so don't hold off on 7.10 for that. I'll merge it into
both master and the branch after the pull request is approved.

I likely will also want to merge these into a hot-fix version 7.8.3 for Mac
only with the screensaver changes before 7.10 is ready for public release,
since OS 10.13 is set for public release on September 25.

At the same time, I will be submitting a tech support request tonight with
Apple asking if there is a better way to fix the problem than the one I have
been working on. Ideal of course would be a fix that does not require any
changes to the project graphics apps, but I'm not too hopeful for that.

(As I wrote before, I expect the fix I am currently working on to only require
the projects to rebuild their existing graphics apps with the new libraries
that I will supply; no changes to the project's code should be needed. It will
of course also involve changes to the BOINC screensaver coordinator included
with the BOINC Mac installer.)
