Re:Waiting for Harry Potter?

I've read two of the first four HP books because they were Hugo
Nominees. They were nice, easy reads.
Nothing spectacular, in my mind, but I did enjoy them. Good children's
fare, and just interesting enough
that I feel that adults might like them.

As the series went on, the books got more complex and a little darker -
well, HP and the gang are growing up
after all. The last couple of hundred pages of Goblet of Fire were, in
my mind, the most interesting of the
entire series (that I'd read, of course).

As for Order of the Phoenix: I preordered as soon as I could - months
ago. My kids are big HP fans, and
each has their own set of the books (my son just got his recently as a
present from a relative). My wife,
son, and daughter will be going to the midnight release party this
coming Friday at the local Borders, where
I've ordered the book. I will be going to bed. The last time I was
able to go out at midnight was back in
college, over 20 years ago. And the last time I purposely did it for a
big event was for Return of the
Jedi (or maybe it was The Empire Strikes Back).

I'm 44 - I turn into a pumpkin at about 10 p.m.

Well not quite on topic, but what my next read will be.

Two years I had not read a HP book. When I saw people my age reading
them I could not believe that they were reading books for kids.
Finally someone who has good recommendations almost forced me to read
the first one. What fun! Now I'm waiting anxiously for the arrival
of the newest book.

My problem right now is that I finished my current book and do not
want to start another as I will probably not be finished by the time
the new HP arrives. (Time to catch up on magazines.)

So how many others are waiting? Anyone else going to buy it the first
weekend it is available? How many think it is still a kids book and
will not read it? Anyone just not care?

I haven't really got started on the Harry Potter books. My sister has
all the ones published so far and I borrowed one from her when I was
home for a weekend about a year ago. I only found time to read the
first few chapters and then never got back into it after that weekend.

I can, however, highly recommend Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials
trilogy (_Northern Lights_/_The Golden Compass_, _The Subtle Knife_ and
_The Amber Spyglass_): they're children's books as good as anything
I've read, and with quite a bit of sophistication mixed in with the
wonderful characters.
