ROFL! Now it's *perfectly* clear. What the heck is a biccie?

Biccie is biscuit in the same way that sarnie is sandwich.

And here I thought it was some hybrid of the US UK words (biscuit + cookie)

  What's that
Churchill phrase about two nations separated by a common language?

 Yes.

Let's table that discussion :-)

Australian English has its oddness (swimmers do laps here, not lengths,

Same here in California...

there are two kinds of footie but neither of them are played with your feet
 (that's soccer)

footie refers to one-piece pajamas where the pant legs cover/enclose the feet.

 and thongs are footwear...!)

That USED to be the same; now thong can either describe footwear or
underwear/bikini bottoms. The best way to tell the difference is that the
footwear are almost always plural.

Biccie is biscuit in the same way that sarnie is sandwich.

A bickie is indeed a biscuit to right-thinking people, but that's
just going to confuse others who think a biscuit is a small bread
more like a scone. I hope Jo Anne remembers her lessons in Aussie-
speak, so she probably knows what you mean.

Yes. And there's a place on Collins Street that imports them. So the
next time you and the Other Half are in the big smoke, we'll have to
have tea and appropriate biccies.

In fact, I still owe you a bed, so you're more than welcome to stay
overnight if you're up for theatre or whatever.

G'Day Ray (and Maree, as I *know* you are lurking and reading this, too)

Thanks for the wiki ref -- now I know what a Jaffa Cake is and that it isn't
subject to VAT =+)). And I did know that cookies are biscuits, but I didn't
know they were also bickies.

Ok, it's time to let the rest of BrinL in on the joke, Ray. I remember with
much amusement the look of horror on Maree's face when I asked for which
'footie' team you two rooted (and I did it more than once, BTW). Evidently
in Aussie-speak, rooting is what you do with your intimate partner in the
privacy of your home, not what you do for your team in the football stadium.

And if it gets too dry and hot there, you can always winter (or summer,
depending on which side of the equator your reside) with us. I promise not
to put cilantro in the salad again.

Amities,

Jo Anne
